Found myself a nameless lathe i'm trying to restore with a back gear and now i finally know what those gears do. Great thanks!

That’s great! I love my old lathe. I’ve been meaning to do more videos on it. If you come up with questions just let me know.

Glad you liked it. I think some people look at them and wonder what they do. For large diameters the are really useful.

Atlas made good quality equipment. I have been fixing things here and there on mine for years. I like old machines :) I have a play list with other how-to’s if you are interested. Depends how much experience you already have. Let me know if you can’t find it. Good luck and have fun.

It's 3am and I randomly had a thought, I wonder how the back gears actually function in my hercus 9... and here we are. Thanks haha

Now you know! They are interesting in their simplicity. I’m thinking about making a wooden clock that uses the same principle. (Usually at 3am, puts me straight back to sleep) 🤠

hi there good looking old lathe john

Yeah I prefer the old stuff. It can still make accurate parts. In my next video released tomorrow I demonstrate making a metric thread where this lathe has an imperial lead screw. A few challenges to work around but I like a challenge. A 60 year old guy taught me this when I was 16. Now I’m 60 so I thought I should teach someone else 🤠

I have a south bend 9" lathe and it works same as your late. Much better built than the cheap Chinese lathe they are selling today.

Great to hear you enjoy your lathe. Mine was frozen up in a few places when I got it. Mostly works great now. I do have a play list with all my videos that feature the lathe. My cross slide is a bit loose in the middle of the travel. If I adjust the gib I can’t get to the extremities any more. I’m putting off re-machining the dove tails due to fear of mucking it up. I’m sure it will make a great video when I bite the bullet and do it. Thanks for commenting! (Most stuff out of China has zero quality control)

And when would I use those speeds Dave :-)

That’s a great idea Mike. I’d need a presenter with boobs or my audience might die from boredom. :) I might just do a video explaining surface speed of different materials and cutting tools. Maybe if some people like this comment 🤠
