What are .blend1 Files? Blender Backups and How to Use Them

I've always wondered what the .blend1 files are that Blender creates, so I did some digging. Here's what I found. Turns out they're not just ordinary temp files like I thought, but actual backup files.

Sorry, I don't know of any way to send the backups to a separate folder. It just defaults to whatever folder the main file is in. Perhaps there is some plugin or something that someone has made to do that, but I don't know of any.

That all depends why your project is crashing. If it's crashing because you're running low on memory, try making sure you don't have any other programs open when you start Blender. You could also try opening up a different project and navigating to the problem program from there. I don't know why that would work, but it's worth a shot! You could also try posting your question to the Blender subreddit or Stackexchange. There's people in those communities who certainly know more than I do!

a project that I saved gave an error, but then I realized that it was saved as '.blend1', when I changed it to '.blend', it opened normally I thought .blend1 was a typo or glitch

Yeah, it is a weird naming convention and can be confusing if you haven’t heard of it before!

I’m not aware of any way to do that, sorry. As far as I know, it only saves to the same folder as the main project. But I could be wrong!
