As someone who has worked as a lab tech at a blood bank for 10 years, I can honestly say this video does a great job of giving a basic overview of blood types. It is complicated stuff, and I haven't seen many videos that do a good job at explaining it.

This actually happened/happens in Japan, there were similar theories to the race theories in Japan. I believe A was ideal, B was bad, O was noble and AB was dreadful. It's now connected to personalities, kinda of like zodiacs, and you'll often find blood types included in facts about celebrities, politicians and even anime characters.

I wonder how the process was when doctors/scientists first started doing transfusions and figuring out what's in blood and how the different types vary. I wonder if they first just used any blood for transfusions and found out that way that not all blood is compatible with other blood. Its crazy just how many things we've been able to learn and discover. Freakin fascinating!

We used to tease my mom about her blood type being O- her mother died giving birth to her last child and bled to death because at the time(1959) they didn't have her blood type readily available. We stopped teasing her after she kept loosing babies because the of the Rh miss match. She got the shot for it and every time a miscarriage. So she had me first and then my brother, I was lucky enough to be A+ but my brother is a negative Rh. The doctor told my brother the more rare your blood type,the harder it is to find donor's for you. My brother fought bone cancer and lost. People with Rh- blood should be organ donors as well. Im surprised that Rh- is not completely extinct, being so difficult to find and seemingly weaker in general. I work with a woman now who lost a son to hemophilia, he was 14 and B-. They just couldn't find donor's on a regular basis. Now when I hear some one say" I have a rare blood type" I just think "Aww, your fucked if you get hurt and need blood ,want to have kids you better hope for a matching Rh factor, need an organ transplant well start asking family first. It just sucks watching friends and family die because thier blood is to odd and couldn't be easily found. My brother left behind a son hes 26-years-old now and donates blood regularly and is an organ donor. He is also has B - blood.

At least you are aware of possible issues so if you're going to have children just let the doctors know. If we knew then the things we know now every thing could have been different. Your blood type is determined by both parents. Here is a calculator: www.endmemo.com/medical/bloodtype.php My mom is B+, my dad is AB-, and I am O+, so it is impossible for my dad to be my biological dad. Statistically, the person who gave the donor bank his sperm which ultimately led to me was probably O+.
@sapphirII
@sapphirII 8 жыл бұрын
He could have been anywhere in O, A and B, and negative or positive. You could have gotten the O gene from both your mom and the donor and gotten the Rh+ from your mom and the Rh- gene from him though.

@bonvivant55
@bonvivant55 10 жыл бұрын
Well, yes and no. He talked a lot about it without actually mentioning the word. When we talk about giving blood, it's actually washed, packed, red blood cells. The antibodies are in the plasma (anticoagulant + centrifugation), and to be a universal plasma donor, you'd need to be AB pos. Types like this rarely make antibodies that would actually cause a HTR in a person who has not received a transfusion in the past. The video is a really great over view though.

Do you have what they call "precious baby blood"? I went to donate one time and I had some marker or something and they said I was fine for normal adults, but that they look for you to not have antibodies or to have antibodies or something specific for baby transfusions...I thought it was a weird thing but all these factors and antigens ect...I'm like what do I know?l
@angelcollina
@angelcollina 10 жыл бұрын
heatherwanderer777 I'm not sure. When I ask and show my card that has all of my factor numbers and letters, no one can explain to me what exactly they mean. But whenever I give blood, I always show it to the Red Cross people so that they can note it on my blood bag (though, I'm sure it's recorded in the system too). I'd love to know if I could help a specific group of people, like babies. I'd go out of my way to make sure they got my blood where they needed it.
@tsssil
@tsssil 10 жыл бұрын
Well there are like 26 other blood groups. And we're all either positive or negative for them. that's where the alphabet soup comes from. It's just probable that you lack a certain common type. So like let's so someone is transfused, and because a certain antigen is really common, that person develops and antibody to that super common antigen that was transfused into them. So then you come along, and you lack that antigen, which means that you can be a donor for that person. Which is great for that person, y'know? Baby blood just has to be fresh, CMV negative, Sickle antigen negative and a few other things. But the freshness is the main thing. It's not like only ~some people~ can donate to them or anything :)
@heatherwanderer777

@nerdra
@nerdra 10 жыл бұрын
Don't worry! While everyone can accept your blood, exact-match is generally preferred in a transfusion situation, and blood banks do their darndest to keep everybody stocked against disasters for each type (i.e. other patients probably aren't hogging up your supply except in emergencies when their own type runs dry or things happen too quickly for caregivers to type them). Plus, 6% of the US population is relatively rare compared to most of the Rh+ types, BUT there are still about 5 times more of you O- folks than my type (B-), and you out-number AB- by 11 times. You're still the 4th most common of the 8 types. Further good news: you can accept plasma from anyone or their grandmother! Yay! :)

So what this boils down to is if you have AB+, you're in great shape if you need blood. If you're O-, like me, you better hope there's O- blood when you need it. Donate blood as many times as you can. If you're O-, the blood centers love you btw.

There are actually about 28 blood types with several that are undeterminable. I for instince: I have to donate my own blood several times a year to myself. (Bagged and stored at the local hosp) In the case that I get hurt, and need blood, I can only use my own, and no one can use my blood. (My Dr loves this because it's something that HE hasnt seen before.) This video should be amended to say there are 8 COMMON blood types.

I've read something that said that certain blood types can fight certain diseases better that other types. Type O has better luck fighting staph for example (might not be the specific disease) because these diseases keep popping up, there's a bit of an evolutionary pressure to keep even the "naked" blood types around
@billvolk4236

Presumably for the same reason that all keys are different. If the goal is for your immune system to identify your own cells and attack foreign ones, it helps if not all human immune systems identify their own cells in the same way. If there were only one blood type, any disease that could get past one human's immune system could get through them all.

Fun fact - the difference between O and A red blood cells is... one base pair. O is a nonsense mutation of A. The description of Rh types is abysmally wrong. Rh positive is just the D antigen, as it's usually called. The system also includes c, C, e, E, and a long list of others, but D is the one that causes the most problems clinically. I'm short a few cousins due to e and c, though. There are a lot more antigens than just the ABO system and Rh system, but most are either extremely rare or nearly universal and they don't often matter. Also, that people have anti-A and/or anti-B antibodies without prior exposure is a bit of a mystery.

I'd like to know more about the iron in our blood. Like why iron? What does it do? Like our blood is made of cells, which is organic matter, and iron is metal, something that usually seen as inorganic....
@GringatTheRepugnant
@GringatTheRepugnant 10 жыл бұрын
Iron doesn't exist in our blood as a metal, but as an ion. It's part of the haem group, a little bit of molecular kit that forms the core of the haemoglobin protein that allows red blood cells to carry oxygen. Without iron in the red blood cells, they wouldn't be able to pick up any oxygen. This is why anaemia (a low level of iron in the body) leads to paleness, chronic fatigue and exhaustion. There are a lot of other metal ions used in the body, too. Potassium and Sodium ions transmit signals through the nervous system. Calcium ions cause cells to release hormones and allow muscle cells to contract. In plants, the chlorophyll molecule has a Magnesium ion at its core that allows it to pick up solar energy. There are loads of others, but Iron, Potassium, Sodium, Calcium and Magnesium are the most well understood textbook examples.

Nemesis ryu Religion may be used by people, but you have to admit there are some large religions that by their very nature produce more violent groups than others (ie the Abrahamic Religions) and it is these religions, not religions like Jainism, that many have a problem with. Yes, science has been used by men to do evil things. Look a Hitler's death camps. But science has the ability to adapt with new information built in to it. Science is like fire you can use it to cook a meal or to burn down someone's house. On the other hand, many (not all) religions are like a disease. You cannot deny many religions stake their validity on being unchanging for even for the most backward of ideologies like making homosexuality or leaving one's religion illegal and sometimes punishable by death. It is these religions that I believe Saeed Neamati was referring to in his original comment.
@FinalLugiaGuardian
@FinalLugiaGuardian 10 жыл бұрын
Nemesis ryu 1st, it is not just Muslims. It can be any Abrahamic Religion. Look at Uganda (a country with many very devout Christians). While gays are not executed there, they can be imprisoned for life. That is not much better. And 2nd, Muslims are not met with anywhere close to the same animosity by the US government that Religious Minorities, ex Muslim converts, and gays are met with in many Islam majority countries' governments. That is why nobody thinks about it. The two are just not comparable.
@FinalLugiaGuardian
@FinalLugiaGuardian 10 жыл бұрын
Nemesis ryu True, many scientists did once think that certain races were inherently inferior in both mind and body, but science evolved and now there is no longer any support for that idea. Science by its very nature is a work forever in progress. Unlike many (not all) religions which stake their validity on being unchanging for even the most backward practices like killing gays for loving the "wrong" person. It was science that has showed many people that being gay is indeed an immutable trait you are born with and thus there can be no wrong choice committed by gays because they made no choice to start with. It is religious ideas from the Abrahamic religions and those that hold on to them in full that continue to hold back society by trying to apply a standard of morals from 1000s of years ago to an ever growing world of knowledge.
@FinalLugiaGuardian

Hardly anybody thinks homosexuality is wrong anymore is because it isn't wrong. there are no other bad effects from gay relationships that heterosexuals do not have. What 2 consenting adults do in their own bedroom is nobody else's concern. Same thing for who wishes to associate with them. As long as gays are not harming anybody else what is wrong with letting them be. And yes gays are likely born the way they are. One cause seems to be something called epigenetics. Epigenetics deal with how our genes get expressed when the body develops (including brain development). Sometimes during development mistakes get made by epigenitics and result in a kid being born gay. And I would not exactly call to gays having consensual sex comparable to things like rape or murder. There is no victim in a gay relationship (provided it is consensual). That is the difference between gays having sex and the the crimes you mention. And on girls wearing short shorts, if you don't like seeing that at your local bar or restaurant look the other way or go to another place with a dress code against that type of dress.

If some people finds it interresting, it's good to know there's many more antigens system on the blood than just ABO and Rh. Before a transfusion, medical labs have to check for either rare antigens group or rare antibodies. Some of them are so uncommon, less than 0.01% of people got them. Search for Duffy, Lewis, MNSs for some more complicated stuff!
@ex-nerd
@ex-nerd 10 жыл бұрын
Definitely not quite that straightforward. I have a friend who tests as one of two different blood types (I think A and AB) depending on the sensitivity of the tests used by the lab. It makes donating blood an interesting challenge, though definitely shows that there is at least some kind of sliding scale between things.

In terms of ABO, it usually *is* that straightforward. Sometimes people type wonkily due to illness or something else weird, but I work in blood banking and usually people are pretty straightforwardly A, AB, B, or O. Granted, once you get into unexpected antibodies and stuff, it can be more complicated
@RyanMathewHarding
@RyanMathewHarding 10 жыл бұрын
I would say that this is much the same as saying certain things only happen to one sex. Yes, there are people who fall somewhere in between, but they are all cases where something went wrong in their genes. Either their DNA failed to replicate properly when they were conceived or something is being expressed improperly, but they aren't the normal case. Basically, there's only one way that humans are "supposed" to work. There could be nearly infinite errors in your genes that change how your body works and as such it's impossible to explain all of them. Instead, they just show us how it's "supposed" to work because that's how it works for the vast majority.
