I once saw someone compare the cozy genre to horror, and I liked that because it fit into my thought process about what I would like the cozy genre more to be. An aesthetic, an atmosphere, associated design principles, and mechanics, layered onto of other existing game genres. Currently, I think the focus is a bit narrower than need be, either coming from community interest, or what is being marketed at us. Not that individuals don't bring up all sorts of games as being cozy for them, but that's a bit different from the wider community tendencies I've noticed.

cozy games for me are games i can lost in for HOURS which ranges from: spooky like Phasmophobia [so much with friends], Overwatch 2, Skyrim, Fallout 4, and most recently Baldurs Gate 3. I loved Palia for the longest time along with Faefarm and Sunhaven. I enjoy those games but crafting and farming get so overwhelming for me. Cozy isnt a set genre...its like you said...its more of a feeling. Cozy for one person doesnt mean always mean cozy for another. i think thats why its such a hard genre to nail down completely.

I think there will always be a differing point of view on what a cozy game is and isn't, but this makes sense to me. I like combat in games but some folks say that games with combat aren't cozy, so I'm like 🤷🏼‍♀️

I don't mind most fishing tasks, but it really depends on the fishing mechanics. I loath fishing in Stardew Valley, lol.

I love Palia but the fishing is so boring. I would rather have a challenge so catching the fish felt rewarding.

For me Cozy games are games designed for non-competitive play. It doesn’t mean there’s no challenge or story telling. But there’s nothing I’m up against. To me games I enjoy and “cozy” games are two different things. I do treat it as a genra more than what makes me feel cozy. Because I think that makes it too complicated as it gets into taste where as I find ‘intent to be cozy’ easier to pin down.

I totally agree that with multiplayer environments game's community is basis of game being cozy or not. I think the idea of Cozy in gaming is more about personal experience and player's own attitude towards the game. For me it's totally not a genre, it's a way to play games. Competitive shooters or grinding games with time limits are easy to rule as non cozy games. But I don't see why horror games could not be cozy if someone is really enjoying those. :D Ah, I love fishing in games! < Thanks for the video!
