If there is no transparency in electoral funding, then the so called "democratic" aspect in that country is a total farce...... Given the massive advances in technology, electoral funding should be banned. Cost of campaigning by political parties should be funded entirely by the Govt. A viable mechanism could be evolved and put in place for this..... The entire political campaign for election's could be through the media. No physical meetings, rallies, poster pastings are necessary.,..

The irony is that the tax payer earning 50,000 Rs should disclose their source of income but the tax collectors is confidential. Laws should be equal to all.

Income tax isn't equitable to electoral bonds. They're basically donations. If tomorrow who you donate to is disclosed then it's revealed which political party you're supporting. It's akin to revealing who you're voting for. It's anonymous for a genuine reason. A person could be targeted if he overwhelmingly funds one party which others may not like.

There is a reason why voting is anonymous disclosing the information to other people which party I have donated for is basically telling them who I am voting for. It is my constitutional right to maintain my privacy. Since the SBI is issuing bonds and they know that all my money is legal then why do other people need to know? To threaten me or slander me? As if there is not enough mudslinging involved that now common people have to be dragged into it.

Palki as a journalist you did not question a very fundamental question in this video which is "Why would someone buy a 1 crore bond and donate to a party fund if he is not getting anything in return?" here is a fun fact that you missed out, as a ruling government can always ask SBI for the details of donors to other parties and pressurize them not to buy the bond. BJP has been doing it actively by raiding the business of doners of opposition parties.

I think having a cap is a much better option (so that no matter how rich u are, u can only donate so much). This is because, as much as I agree with ur proposition, we must understand that if you donate some X amoint to a Y party and that is disclosed; the point of having anonymous elections is beaten. I mean, when u cast vote, it is secret; but then ur name is disclosed and everybody knows u voted for whom. Now, in a state like Bengal where any voter even slightly supporting non-TMC candidate is beaten to d€@th, disclosure is like putting a bounty on him/her.

Only ₹ 9500 crores collected in five years? That is, ₹ 1900 crores per year? This is a piddling amount considering the size of Indian economy which is more than $ 3 trillion annually today. The government spends ₹ 50,000 crores ($2 billion) for conducting the elections. More money should have come from private contributions to political parties. But at least we now know how much money the political parties are collecting as donations.

I cannot speak to other countries systems, but I find America's lacking now... I think there should be limits in both amounts and that donors should be known above certain amounts... I do not think corporations should be allowed to make donations to anyone or any party... In fact, only private citizens should be allowed to make donations period...

Palki you are wrong , Election can be win without money . If you could reasearch and just asked the MLA from Meghalaya , who belong to the Nongkrem , Mawryngkneng, North Shillong and Mawlai constituencies , they won huge margin against the candidates who spend crore and crore of money. The four MLA are hero to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.. They all belong to the VPP (Voice of People Party) and symbol called Prah . The Shillong seat will witness the winning of MP from the said party without money ..

Doesn't disclosing the identity of donors reveal their political affiliations likely to be reflected in their voting patterns - which is in shark contrast to the concept of secret ballot so vehemently protected and rightly so. The anonymity of the donors protects them while funding electioneering.

Public has no moral right to ask political party for its income when they take money to vote particular party. In India, it’s an open secret that people take money/goods/services for voting particular candidate. So, until this practice stops, political parties would need tonnes of money to win elections. This is harsh reality check !!!

Why does the managing editor have to give an explainer and leave out the opinion? No opinion or no guts? Where are the difficult questions that editors are supposed to ask? As you haven't done your job let me ask... 1. How exactly do electoral bonds make the process transparent? 2. Is there an advantage to any party or group of parties? 3. Can there be better options to make the process of electoral funding more democratic?
