There’s more to this though - they’re not necessarily buildings, in some cases windowless shipping containers on an industrial estate. More concerning though is that food delivery is about data. So if a delivery company sees a high number of Indian or Burger orders they create a fictional brand in that area, eg. Holy Cow from Deliveroo and directly compete with the local restaurants they also deliver from. They also just undercut them and offer specials. Good for them and larger brands, less so for the smaller local independent being successful.

The Grand Tour Fans, F&H regulations apply to a dine-in or ghost kitchen just the same as both are regulated by the Health Department. These are standards that must be applied to no matter where the kitchen is located. If someone gets sick from the food in either place it can trigger a health inspection, so it’s in the best interest of the business to adhere to the regulations at both places. At least in the US, as far as the UK goes I have no idea. That would be something to research though.

The concern that I have with this is one of transparency. We are all familiar with the health and hygiene ratings on windows/doors of food establishments. Using a delivery app, you may not know for sure where you for is being made. A lot of people may end up opting for a choice because they have been in/seen the restaurant, only for the food to be made off-site. What happens when the ghost kitchen has a different rating to the restaurant? Will the rating be shown for the ghost kitchen, or, more likely, which ever has the higher rating. Perhaps if the restaurant has the higher rating they will claim they need to use that one to attract people using the app to eat out at the restaurant, and if the ghost kitchen has the higher rating they will claim transparency of where delivered food is prepared is the most important factor. This may not be so bad when one is 5 and the other is 4. But what if the restaurant is 5 and the ghost kitchen is 1? What if you live in a city and a large chain has several ghost kitchens, with varying ratings? This may help convenience for the restaurant, and even improve productivity/profits... But the potential for poor food handling/hygiene becoming a masked problem where the consumer has no idea if the kitchen their order is coming from is a bad choice, or even just knowing where their order will be prepared before ordering it, becomes a serious concern.

Sure there’s a lot of garbage that one can get delivered, but higher end restaurants don’t do this sort of thing because there’s a standard of food quality that is more important to them. Sure I can get any kind of TGI McF-wads food delivered to my door but the quality of that food is truly trash. It’s lukewarm, most likely soggy, and overpriced for what you ultimately get (when you account for delivery fees included). If you want truly good food then either learn how to make it yourself or get off your lazy rear and go to a restaurant. You truly get what you give in this situation.

Seeing as how the food isn't coming from the restaurant you think it's coming from, what's stopping a third party from entering this race? Suppose you place an order at Place A. But really the food is manufactured and packaged at Place B. Eventually someone will realize that the people buying have no god damn idea where this food is coming from and open up Place C. A completely unrelated store to Places A and B, but using something like a similar or even the exact same name as Place A. Customers can't complain the food they received from Place C didn't come from Place A. It wouldn't have even if they ordered directly from Place A. This seems like an excellent opportunity for organized crime. You just use an app and click to order food. Don't know from where or how. But somehow it ends up at your door. Like magic. And as long as folks aren't getting sick, they may not even notice that what they're ordering, isn't what they think they're ordering.
@WalterBurton4 жыл бұрын
The straighter line is just a truncation of the first line. The only value Place A adds to the contract is reach (branding). Therefore, Place B will eventually supplant Place A. There are a bunch of classic examples of this, but I'm not entirely sober at the moment, so I will just refer you to the (much more capable) Intertubes. :-)

I have only eaten 2 delivery meals, since I can cook a meal in 30 minutes I can do it quicker than one of these food delivery meals. Having been to a Jamie Oliver restaurant I was not impressed uncomfortable chairs, crowded, noisy and the food and service was average. Eating out supports local restaurants and it comes to the table hot, food delivered will never be as hot due to the distance travelled and the weather can influence this.
