The question posited "Can these pirates find a shred of empathy" has been answered already. 33 was literally programmed to be a pirate. Loot, plunder, murder, all of it. When he sucker punches Silvo, he's on the kids side. This haggard, menacing droid decides takesy-backsies is a good argument, because Fern is his captain, and even more, she's not a pirate.
@sorejack10 сағат бұрын
I think 33 is the original captain, and isnt running on a programmed pirate code. Proven by his actions. He wanted the treasure for himself. Killed the cold crew, but the crashed the ship at the door to the prize, by the time he reactivates hes already off world and beyond quickly returning. Scrambled and in poor condition. He was found at the door handle for crying out loud. Hell be back.

When Jod lashed out at the kids he was venting traumatically. He was telling himself he was weak to remind himself he needs to put weakness inside him away for good. He was regressing to the moments he began to become a ruthless opportunist when he was a kid. The kids have triggered him and the parental messages probably did as well. He’s losing control. He’s fighting himself. The question is how long will getting all he wants getting so close will distract him from inner conflicts. If he does have redemption it will be a split second decision like Darth Vader had to decide to throw the emperor down a shaft. Great show

One thing we've established is that he is a liar. Specifically, he lies about himself, who and what he is. I don't think he is really a pirate in the same way he isn't really a Jedi. He plays the role of Jedi in front of the kids because it is to his advantage. He plays the role of pirate in front of pirates because that is to his advantage. He wears identities like someone would wear a cheap jacket. He had every reason and opportunity to kill Fern during the "battle to the death" for captainship. An actual pirate whose only interest is the greedy pursuit of profit would. He chose not to. That's because around the kids he comes a lot closer to being his true self. When he was threatening them he was lying again. He was playing the role of pirate, but he isn't one. Let that sink in.

Are we not going to address the fact that these people clearly haven’t had any contact with the Republic in a very long time? For example, when the Onyx Cinder comes into land, people seem surprised to see a ship. People were just going about their business on top of the landing hatch pracitcally falling into the opening because they’ve never experienced a Republic Emissary in over 30 years - maybe longer. In other words, most of the adults are clueless as to what to expect. It is clear that At Attin was unaware of the Empire. It makes me wonder if the Republic Mint had monetary independence from the Senate. If the Emissaries were Jedi, then its possible when Order 66 was executed, knowledge of its location was lost to Palpatine. I hope we learn its mystery in the final episode because I have the sense that the show is a one and done venture for Disney. And personally, I am fine with that as long as the mystery is explained.

I’m sure he has one now. So we probably get supervisor ex pirate. Vs. Jod NaNaNaNa Wood. We probably get a cool saber battle and a lesson that pirating can’t be forever. The key floating to his hand, it looked like he was struggling to do that, a trained Jedi (or even a Padawn), it would've easily flown to their hand. IMHO, in the series finale we might learn that one of the kids may have latent Jedi powers. Probably Wim, he dreamt of faraway adventures (just like Luke), he found the lightsaber, he ignited it, and he's been the bane of Jod's anger. I'd like to see the story of how the Republic "lost" At-Attin. You'd figure that during the Clone Wars where money was key, that Darth Syphilis would have been aware of a Republic Mint.
@SpottedHares13 сағат бұрын
They said they needed a Jedi pathfinder, so maybe the Jedi were the only ones keeping tabs on the mint planet and Remwber they were so bad with money they funded an entire army with out knowing or noticing it.

Delve into the economic implication of that mint for the new republic. I’d say the stores alone right now could probably tank the galactic economy…

Great breakdown as always! I feel like one of several themes of the show, like any coming-of-age story, is breaking out of your comfort zone. Here we can extend the metaphor slightly and make it a breaking free of old paradigms and patterns of behavior ("programming"). Both the kids and their parents are forced to confront aspects of their lives that they held to be true and above reproach. It was just the way things always have been. I think it was telling that we set a story on At Akrin, which was a dystopian dark mirror to At Attin. The children learned that there were people like themselves who didn't have the comfortable and conflict-free lives that they had. What change in their own society could leave them in the same position? Is it the conflict with the pirates? Contact with the larger galaxy? Either way, the At Attin civilization is at a crossroads. Perhaps we learn what the Great Work is next episode. Is it *just* minting credits? Or was the money just a means to fund the *true* Great Works of the Old Republic. The show has certainly proved that it defies expectations when it comes to the storyline. Still, there's a potential for a "happy" ending where At Attin uses some small portion of their stockpiled dataries to help other start systems like the other At* systems and even the pirates themselves. The genie is already out of the bottle so it's unlikely that At Attin can avoid contact with the galaxy. Perhaps they enter into an agreement with the New Republic if they see it as a continuation of the old one. They also can't dump their money into the galaxy all at once, the rampant hyperinflation would make it useless. In the end, I wouldn't be surprised if the Supervisor is - as many suspected - an AI or a droid itself. Then it's a matter of breaking it out of its centuries/millennia-long programming to re-evaluate the status quo and find a new path word. Maybe Jod doesn't get redeemed but he could perhaps make an appeal to the Supervisor and tell them how *hungry* what galaxy is. How they're all fighting for scraps, especially in the aftermath of the galactic civil war. While his motivation might be slightly self-serving (since it's likely he will be uncovered as an imposter), we have seen Jod weave honesty into his interactions, particularly when trying to manipulate people. And we know he likes his speeches. And it was noted that the droids never listen (so perhaps now they will). However the show lands in the final episode, I feel like it's earned enough goodwill to believe that it will deliver a satisfying (and touching) conclusion. :) Sorry for the long ramblings, your reviews always get me thinking!

Love this channel. The bit about the overview effect brought to mind one of my favorite quotes, by the astronaut Edgar Mitchell: "You develop an instant global consciousness, a people orientation, an intense dissatisfaction with the state of the world, and a compulsion to do something about it. From out there on the moon, international politics look so petty. You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, "Look at that, you son-of-a-bitch."

I feel that another reading of Jod/Silvo's behavior in this episode might be connected to the fact that what he saw has pushed a particular button deep within his heart. Throughout the episode he tries to convince Brutus (and himself) that he belongs with the crew, that they "love" him. We might obviously write this off as his pirate trash-talking. However what is really interesting is that he directed a lot of anger against the kids, even though this wasn't the most dangerous situation he was in. He could play it off in many different ways, but something set it off. That something was seeing the message from the parents and realizing that the four leads are not like him. That they have people caring and waiting for them, something that no Mint is going to (truly) buy him. And on some level he becomes aware of that and aims his own internal frustration at the Skeleton Crew, because of the hateful envy that overcame him. Obviously he is greedy and immoral, but I think deep down he is a very sad person and witnessing actual human bonds made him feel additonal disdain. Right now he is in the tunel Vision mode regarding the credits, not only due to the greed but also because he is unwilling and unable to process his own traumas. He IS the scared one, cause he knows that without the Mint he is completely useless to the pirates.

If Jod didn't execute Brutus right there I would've called him pathetic 😅. He literally was gifted wrapped. So happy the writers understood that 😂. Jod definitely to me is solidified as a former Padawan to me. Essentially Someone like Ahsoka (around the time she left)with less battle prowess it seems. He obviously knows how to utilize the force but doesn't really seem to be a great force user if you understand me😅. Unless he's hiding from the Jedi then idk why he would have to hide it

This is why I want to get Jod's backstory so bad. Was he part of the order during the purge? How did he make it out? How did he fall into the life of a pirate? His little speech to the kids seems like honest resentment from someone who has struggled to survive facing children who have not. What has he gone through to twist him into this?

My question is, who was the true emissary. It is kind of weird the empire never tried to find it or why the planets were never found in republic records. It seems like there was a select individual in the republic who was responsible for safely guarding these jewels of the old republic with the information of their locations and retrieving republic credits when the need would arise.

This show keeps paying off little details. A tiny detail from early on in the series is Fern's story about the kid that missed his exam & was sent to the mines below the school. I've been thinking ever since that this is what happens to those individuals that are deemed to lack the necessary skills to work on the surface level and are then forced into manual labor. There are 1,039 vaults filled with credits, who is mining this resource? I believe that Wim's mother was sent to the mines for one reason or another, which is why Wendel was so focused on his performance at work. Trying to keep himself from suffering the same fate. A terrible secrete that only the adults are aware of. Only those that are useful and productive towards the "Great Work" may remain in the comforts & relative 'freedom' of the At-Attin's surface. I believe that this is the only of the 9 not to face an uprising from its slave faction.

When Jod was yelling at the kids I thought he was talking from a place of greed. I don’t think he’s actually a bad person but I think he’s been dealt a bad hand and sees dollar signs. It’s a good representation of what greed can do to a person.

Jod's got a good excuse to be in a bad mood, poor man took a dura steel clad right hook from Popeye the sailor droid to the jaw. I'd be a wee bit low on patience too. Side note, anyone else wonder if we're going to find out who the overseer is, and if it'll be important?

I suspect Jod is a former Jedi padawan who survived order 66, and it broke him.
@polleonardtaliesinhywel698611 сағат бұрын
I get the feeling that Jod may have been a former Padawan (maybe Petro?) who fell in with pirates in order to survive, hiding his true identity. I can imagine that over time he has really lost his way by giving into the greed that has been around him so long. I may be quite wrong though, but it would be interesting to see a character that was once a child in a previous story having changed so drastically by adulthood.
@TheRealAlpha211 сағат бұрын
There was a fraction of a moment where I saw regret on his face while he was yelling at the kids. Just the tiniest moment where ht looked like he didn't want to be saying what he did but he pushed through it. I mean everyone is always saying how good the Kids acting has been but then you see a real pro at work and you know it's because they're taking notes. The things about Jid that I can't tell is if there's still a chance for him to come back from everything. I don't see him actually hurting the kids intentionally no matter what he says because he knows they are the easiest path to getting adults to do what he wants but that's not the same as having enough empathy to change for them. Not unless it continues to fit his self serving nature, the version of himself he shows even when he's alone is still a person of questionable moral fiber and decades old teachings he's twisted and forced to apply to piracy.

I won't lie I was extremely surprised that this super secret important highly valuable planet security Droid never asked Jod to see some id or scan his badge or give at least a CLEARANCE CODE of some sort??! But ok. Still a great show.
@Trey-dp6tl14 сағат бұрын
My guess is they’re on some sort of peace time protocols. If it’s a Republic ship that the barrier let through then you’re good. Organic security guards would have probably thought Jod was shady and asked for ID, but the droids are programmed not to question a Republic Emissary so they don’t. Perhaps during war time they get way stricter and require some form of ID
@Forsworcen12 сағат бұрын
I mean, with a government going on over 20,000 years old and planets with security protocols that are sometimes older than that you probably wouldn’t want to base the accessibility of your vault on ID codes remaining the same. That’s a good way to lose access to your own vault. The system being based on the ship itself is secure enough most of the time since, even if someone steals the ship, they generally won’t know where the planet actually is.

At Attin was a mint world. The people that live there were the support and administrative community. At some point a conflict broke out (possibly the Clone Wars, since we did see a CIS tank on sibling world, but probably during the High Republic era) and it and a handful of other such worlds were in sectors either in or bordering conflict zones. Rather than pulling out of the world, potentially allowing for bad players to get their hands on the lucrative mining operation, they decided to seal them off, hiding the world with the elaborate storm satellite network. And somehow, the Republic and Palpatine forgot about it and its sibling mint worlds.
