We are back with our street interview series from India! If you’re new here, our main project is to travel to different parts of the world and ask people what they are wearing as a way to transition into deeper questions on social and political issues that affect their day to day lives. We see how fashion piques an inherent curiosity within people about other people. Our goal is for people to recognize the struggles other people face from a place of connection, because as humans, we naturally invest in who or what we care about.
Kashmir holds a special place in our hearts and the parallels between what is going on in Gaza and the story of Kashmir are plain to see. For us, Kashmir solidified our core belief that the world's problems are not dissimilar from each other. Every "conflict" clearly indicates a stark imbalance in power. And the messy truth is that none of us are immune from the fallout. Today, it is more common to intellectualize and disassociate from the challenging truths, especially when it has to do with human suffering we do not feel personally connected to.
In Kashmir, it was important to document the experiences of the Kashmiris residing in the main city and their tribal populations that live in the mountains and meadow. We can see how India's policy change towards Kashmir affects both populations. On one hand, it is changing the landscape of the Kashmir they have always lived in and the other, Kashmiris are not being consulted and their voices are being actively suppressed to reach a larger goal. It's important to know that Indian people are mostly unaware of what is happening with Kashmiris, or what role their government is playing in subduing (or manipulating) the media coverage of it. Ever since the government ruled to repeal the constitutional articles that preserved some of Kashmir's autonomy, Kashmiris have seen a gradual change in the land they call home and they don't feel they have any say in it. Please watch the full video with that in mind. I urge all of you learn more about what is happening in Kashmir, because the information is limited and did require us to go to the source to truly see what is happening. What does it look like to you?
