I am replacing one of these with a standing seam. The reason being the valeys use 'flangeing' and some sort of binding material. Over time in Texas heat the seams contract and expand and form tares which allow water in. Anyway from what i hear the standing seam does not have kocking and thus avoid the problem because valeys run under and clips in with no binding materials . Long story short had water damage water came in and shorted wiring around my airconditioner system and, and, and. Roof alone 56k. I don't speak roof bit that was the gest i got. All i know is make sure about your contractors

Very nice explanation, roll formed sheet metal have much higher toughness to weight ratio than any other type of shingles which cause less weight during snow accumulations and less stresses on the roof beam structure, therefore much more lighter and simpler structure for the roof can be designed which is an advantage economically.

I'm glad he looped back around to longevity near the end because when he was asked about price, he made it sound like metal roofs might only last 5 to 15yrs. I was thinking "that can't be right, but I'll wait and see if he specifically addresses life expectancy". Good follow up at the end, crisis averted. Warranty is anywhere between 40yrs and lifetime, the limitation usually being paint.

Agreed. His story about the metal roofs in Ohio that have been around since the 1800's really drove that point home! Thanks for commenting! -Thad

@@TheMetalRoofingChannel I have no doubt that those roofs are copper$$$ Unfortunately, metal scrappers are the least logical people on the planet. I used to live in a neighborhood where you'd come back from vacation and no one had broken into your house, but your gutters, downspouts, and aluminum siding might be gone. I live in Ohio and I'm planning a new rural build. It will have a standing seam steel roof (I will be looking at Sheffield Metals products). But, I'm also considering a mix of horizontal and shingle type metal siding. I'll only be looking at steel because of my history with the insidious metal scrappers and their lust for copper and aluminum.

@cowboybuilder
@cowboybuilder 2 жыл бұрын
You can't walk on them when they're wet, you really will skate off the edge. The pitch of your roof matters. You really should follow health and safety guidelines which means a scaffold tower to the height of your eves and really a safety harness as well, as a private individual you can invariably do as you wish. If you walk in the middle of the tiles then will dent in, they generally pop out again, but at 250 pounds they might not. You are supposed to put your weight on the leading edge (Of the row) as that's where the roofing baton is put horizontally across the roof trusses and where the steel panels are nailed in, Ideally if you stand on the edge that is also on the roofing truss underneath that would be optimal. (If I was a private individual going on a roof I'd make sure that the soles of my footwear are the type that stick more to metal and I'd wear general building gloves that have that sprayed on plastic finishing as that grips well to metal).

Hello, Very good videos . I have two roofs to redo 4000 sq. ft. and it is on the Asphalt shingle, to install metal shingles , can we pause the membrane directly on the shingle ? or remove the shingle? Or install plywood on the shingle, membrane and metal shingles ?? Thank you very much for your suggestions !

We generally recommend removing the existing asphalt shingle roof so you can properly inspect the roof deck and make any repairs to the existing structure before installing a new roof. I actually have a video about roofing over asphalt shingles coming out on Wednesday, but it focuses on standing seam. I know metal shingles are installed over asphalt shingles all the time, but I would check with the specific manufacturer of the system and get their recommendation. -Thad

I realize that the roof material is not really an insulation, but we have to consider that there will be more heat transfer by conduction than with more traditional materials. Any thoughts? Also, what about compatibility with solar electric systems?
@davidchillton1744

Installed similar to asphalt shingles for the solar. As for heat transfer, depending on the reflectance rating it can be similar or better than asphalt shingles, it will also depend on house style and wether or not the attic is a heated/ cooled space or not

You should get a standing seam/long run steel or metal shingles that have a smooth paint finish. Then use an anti mold/moss on your roof (as a wash) say at least yearly. Moss takes hold quickly once its got something to latch onto.

What about if you had to walk on the roof for some reason, how much damage would be caused ?
@TheMetalRoofingChannel
@TheMetalRoofingChannel 4 жыл бұрын
It depends on the profile of metal shingle you end up going with. Some profiles are taller and have more of a gap between the metal and the roof deck, and some are closer to the deck. However, the main consideration would be frequency. How often would you be walking on the roof? If you have a particularly high traffic area, you can add foam backers to the underside of the metal shingles to reduce any strain to the metal. You can hear Todd talk about the foam in next week's episode on how metal shingles are made. Hope this helps! -Thad

In addition to the optional foam backers, if extensive work is being done on the roof, such as perhaps chimney cleaning, you can lay foam or boards on top of the metal shingles and then walk on those. They distribute the weight and prevent damage to the roof.

What is the cost difference between this metal roof system and a snaplock system? Any pros/cons between the 2 systems? I am about to do a roof now and that question put the purchase of your product on hold until we reviews costs and life expectancy/warrantee.
@TheMetalRoofingChannel
@TheMetalRoofingChannel 4 жыл бұрын
Hello! Great question. We actually have a video about metal shingle cost coming out April 8, but I can give you a quick answer. If you check out this video, bit.ly/metal-roof-cost-price-video , you can see a snaplock pricing example around 1:53. We priced the same house with two different kinds of metal shingles, and it came out to be about double the price as the snaplock. There are several reasons for that. Material, paint finish, amount of labor, and more all contributed. There could be steps you could take to help reduce the cost of the metal shingles and get it closer to snaplock, but metal shingles will most likely be more expensive because of the labor involved alone. Of course, it depends on your contractor and area. If you need any technical help or have any specific questions about warranties, I would suggest getting in contact with the Sheffield Metals technical department: www.sheffieldmetals.com/Resources/Technical-Department I hope this is helpful! -Thad

Here is an issue I have with metal roofs. I will have my stand alone garage/barn style roof. I will cover it with a standing seam metal roof. I heard Martha Stewart once say her metal roof is loud when it rains. On my garage t doesn't matter, but what about my house. It is also a barn style roof as the house is a Dutch Colonial. and the mansard part of the roof is right at window level. Won't I hear the sound of water hitting metal while inside, and tryintg to sleep? Would it sound like water hitting an empty aluminum garbage can? Nobody is talking about the sounds.

The level of sound is relative to any insulation you have which will dampen the noise. I lived in a metal roofed house as a kid and the sound of rain was definitely noticeable as there was no loft insulation. Must admit I liked the sound of the rain on the roof.

Why the f am I redoing a roof every 10 years in Florida if using metal? Less weight, way more rigidity, and as long as the finish is clean why do I need to replace? I'm over the high cost bs and insurance bs. I've done all my own home remodeling including roofing and I'm just at a loss for words. The whole system is ridiculous. Warranty doesn't mean squat if the insurance company is making you replace it. The extra cost isn't worth it either.

Asphalt shingles are junk, they are nailed to the underlying OSB and must sweat leading to the rapid deterioration of the substrate. Its very surprising that they as a roofing solution are still used. OSB rapidly deteriorates when exposed to moisture.
