How about DexosD

Have a different understanding here...OEM specs are always based on ACEA/API/ILSAC requirements and on top of that OEMs ask for a more or less long list of dedicated OEM engine tests that look for FE, durability, cleanliness or air entrainment performance. Therefore BMW LL-04 is much more than just ACEA C3. Also Porsche Cxx asks for a Porsche engine test that is obviously not part of BMW LL-04 for example.

Interesting. What you just summarised is exactly what I was trying to communicate, but obviously didn’t do so very effectively! 😛 Just for my own edification - what was your take on the video so I can refine it better.

I'm enjoying the geekery level of all this information, but what I'd really like to know at a practical level is: I have made the error of putting in what my shop labels as dexos 5w40 (I think it's dexos2) in a car that was a diesel VW and should have gotten EURO 5w40. (I can add details off the barrel if necessary) This happened for a few months before anyone caught it. What harm did I (potentially) contribute to? My coworkers were really lousy at explaining *why*, but they seemed to be confident it was extra critical for a diesel. More complicated question: the EURO barrel has run dry partway through the oil change. The customer is in a rush and doesn't want to wait for delivery. What should I recommend as the next-best alternative, filling with 5w30 EURO or with 5W40 dexos2? (Should I match the additive specs or the basic weight?)

Nice one as usual I really enjoy your videos Keep them coming But one thing you mentioned when stating HTHS viscosity, you said A3/B4 HTHS limit is 3.5 centistokes Is it measured in centistokes or centipoise? As I know it’s representing the dynamic viscoity at elevated temperature If you can correct me my dear
@wangsheng1640
@wangsheng1640 2 жыл бұрын
For ACEA A3/B4 performance standard, the HTHS limit is >= 3.5 cP not in cSt unit.

Also the ACEA C oils are low saps. But , the C3 is the mid saps version of the low saps family oils. You cand also find that this low saps family engine oils made with lowest saps, low saps and the mid saps engine oils. Proche C30 and VW 504 507 is the combo that you can find on the market not the 502 505.01 with the C30. Also the 502 and 505.01 are almost gone for the ACEA C3 engine oils with 5w40 viscosity . The 511 replaced them. Also the Dexos2 is rare as a combo with C30 and 504 507 ( the mobil 1 esp 5w30 have it ). The BMW LL01 is found on the ACEA A3/B4 engine oils, and it also have been updated recently and a lot of BMW engines with catalytic converter used it. So not only the BMW LL04 is a catalytic converter safe option. BMW LL01 and LL04 have been updated in 2018, and are used world wide for bmw cars. In Europe you can find a car with Euro5 and BMW LL04 engine oil optin that in the US use BMW LL01. The BMW LL01 and LL04 are not for full synthetic oils because the base oils used for most of these are mineral. You can find gropu IV and V base oil used for some engine oils with those approvals like Ravenol VMP 5w30 but most of them are mineral oil based.

Wow! That's a decent amount of detail. But to your point, yes, there are many combinations of industry/OEM specs available. It's probably a lot more complexity than we should expect the average consumer to understand...

Rafe, what are the differences in testing/certification criteria between api sn and api sp oils? so far all ive heard are lower Calcium limits to prevent low speed detination and timing chain wear tests. how are they meeting wear protection requirements with lower combined zddp, and moly totals? what i have noticed is most sp oils are a syn blend when they were formally sold as conventional. makes me wonder if noack and visc index requirements have gotten more strict.....
@LubricationExplained
@LubricationExplained 2 жыл бұрын
So I don't believe that the lower Calcium levels are actually set by the SP category. It's just that oil formulators have found that lower levels of calcium detergents help them to pass the Sequence IX test for LSPI. Aside from that test, the other additional tests above SN are Sequence IVB instead of IVA (cam wear), Sequence VH instead of VG (engine sludge), Sequence VIII (bearing wear), Sequence X (timing chain wear).

It stands for "service", and the c stands for "commercial". But I think that most people find it easier to remember "spark" vs "compression".

If a manual asks for API SM oil for petrol engines and C2 for their diesel engines is it ok to put a oil in the petrol version with acea c2, PSA B71 2290 specs?
@LubricationExplained
@LubricationExplained 2 жыл бұрын
Hard to comment without seeing the specific manual - my guess is that they're specifying different oils for different applications, so best not to cross wires. Having said that, there really isn't that much of a difference between most diesel and petrol engine oils these days, aside from the availability of low viscosity grades for petrol engines.

My petrol cars owner manual specifies API SM Ilsac GF-4 or Acea A5/B5 i´v been running it for years with API SN Acea C2/C3 oil (Mobil1 ESP 5w-30 and Shell Helix Ultra 0w-30 ECT C2/C3 depending on which one is on sale) the A5/B5 spec is often found on C2 oils so HTHS is at the same level on both BUT the A5/B5 oils are usually only API SL rated, which is almost obsolete, so i prefer to use the C2/C3 because of a much higher API rating and the later are LL oils. There should be less oil specs, life would be much easier for folks who do not understand much about engine oils.

Volvo D5 (2.4L diesel) EURO V has EGR, DPF and cat, still the manual says A5/B5 oil, you would think it would be C3.

Fuel economy is lost as soon as dirt is detected inside the engine. If we remove the Entrained and Dissolved Air in the Fuel we can restore most of the lost fuel economy.
