Nice video. I'm here because I was wandering how those covers were made. Painting, but... oil, acrylics? I think oil. Will keep searching. Thank you

Congratulations! You were pretty much on point with your presentation on "What Is A Pulp Magazine". I cringe at some of the videos, the hosts trying to make their observations, and haven't got a clue. Amazing. The Dime Novels spawned some characters that carried over into the pulp magazines, Young Wild West and Nick Carter. There may be others. I collect various titles from all genres, mostly for the authors. Up until recently many of these wordsmiths had never been reprinted,, or collected. That has changed. There are publishing houses now dedicated to pulp fiction from ADVENTURE, SHORT STORIES, ARGOSY, and other general fiction pulp titles people may not recognize. They are also republishing detective, western, and selections from specific authors who have not been collected in book form until now. You might not be able to afford the pulp magazines, but these books won't break you.

WWII paper restrictions also hurt pulps

Playboy began in the 50's and Hef was a childhood fan of pulps and comics so he brought some of them over to get published in his magazine. The creator of Plastic Man, Jack Cole was a Playboy artist before he died.

Argoy is considered the first pulp magazine. Pulps replaced the dime novels, and were replaced by paper back books, digests, tv, movies, etc

Great video. Quick question - do you think people are going to start collecting pulps more like they do comic books?

Great question! It’s actually a thing that’s already happening. I’m just waiting for a pulp grading company to pop up now haha

ARGOSY is considered the First PULP Magazine starting with October 1896 when it became an all-fiction magazine (prior to that it was a "boys magazine" called The GOLDEN ARGOSY from Dec. 9,1882 - Nov. 24, 1888). You hit the "Big 4" of the main Pulps but forgot about the main Detective pulp BLACK MASK where l Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Carroll John Daly (creator of the "Hard-Boiled detective stories), and Erle Stanley Gardner were to be found. Pulps had a major influence on comic books: The very first Batman story, "The Case of the Chemical Syndicate" (May 1939) was plagiarized from The SHADOW - November 1936 ("Partners of Peril"). Batman's "Bat-Signal" came from The PHANTOM DETECTIVE (along with his specially built Bat-Mobile). Batman's origin ? How familiar does this sound: "...he must become a figure of sinister import... A strange Nemesis that would eventually become a legendary terror to all of crimedom... In the shadows above his head came a slithering, flapping sort of sound. As the creature hovered above the lamp for an instant it cast a huge shadow upon the cabin wall. "That’s it !’ exclaimed Clade aloud. ‘I’ll call myself ‘The Bat.’ " The BAT: POPULAR DETECTIVE from Nov. 1934 to Feb. 1935 by Johnston McCulley, creator of ZORRO. Jack Schiff, the Editor of POPULAR DETECTIVE, would later be Batman's editor (1943-1964). Batman's hand gauntlets (gloves) also came from the BLACK BAT. The first Black Bat story appeared July 1939 while the first Batman appeared on the stands May 1939, HOWEVER as the Black Bat was an ALL-TEXT story (and original story; remember Batman's first was plagiarized) I'm sure you'll agree that it took longer to write, hence, was created BEFORE May 1939 !!! The WHISPERER Pulp, 1936-1937, had a police commissioner James Gordon. Superman came from DOC SAVAGE: CLARK Savage, Jr., to CLARK Kent/Man of Bronze vs. Man of Steel. Also Doc's "Fortress of Solitude" (mentioned since the first story in March 1933, but first appearing October 1938.

good video. subscribed channel. I have a question how do you keep up with writers so you can get to see them for photographs and signings. I have a few issues of Alan Moore's work and am a huge fan but don't know how to keep track if he is coming to Canada or not. no twitter nothing.

World war 2 also wrecked copper and gold industry also hurt film industry cause they couldn't send films to Europe and Asia. They minted steel cents then instead of copper ones. They needed copper for the military used in electronics and plumbing.

very cool video. I love the SF and Fantasy pulps. Arguably all of our current popular culture has it's roots in the pulps.
