What are Skinner Box Games? - How Gaming Helps

We all have games we love to play, but what is it about them that keeps us playing? Do you love earning rewards and getting better gear, or do you prefer buying in game items with real money? Skinner Box games are designed to give you a dopamine hit from finishing a quest, and keep you coming back for more!

Excellent stuff. I used to play "Hayday" on the iPad but refused to spend money on it. Also it wasn't a game as much as a waiting around simulator. So I stopped. I found myself actually addicted to the browser game Fallen London. It's actually GOOD, with a rich world to explore. But I was planning my day around when my "candles" (the action timers) would reset so as to maximise my choices. So I had to stop.

I actually just had a student write multiple papers on Hayday! It's fascinating because it chases that Skinner box loop, but also needs to maintain a balance between keeping what brought players in and updating to try to entice new players, because money. I got the same way with WoW back in the day as you did with Fallen London - I had to stop because my undergrad grades were being affected...

This is the first time I've heard the term Skinner box! Would loot boxes be considered in this? I never feel satisfied when I pay for a perk to help in games, infact I hate when I do it

Ya loot boxes are the worst kind of Skinner Box...I feel the same tho, when I spend real money on something digital it doesn't give me a dopamine hit! Same goes for when I buy collectors editions of games...offering me cosmetic items and charging me more doesn't entice me! 😆
