I am not a sad ham, but a happy one :) I too, own a few UV5R radios as well as a couple of high dollar Kenwood/Yaesu radios. I recently tested a UV5R against a Kenwood radio that cost about 10x what the boofwang costs. I ran several tests using a GWInstek GSP-630 spectrum analyzer and my tests showed virtually no difference on the analyzer. Further, I did not see any harmonics transmitted from either radio. BTW, as a happy ham operator - I loves your videos.
@BobBruns2 жыл бұрын
I have 2 uv5r's and 2 uvx3's and a Kenwood TH-D74A. Only difference is the Kenwood's output is higher on all 3 bands on said baofengs. Getting into the repeater(s) with all of them on 2m, 440cm and the 220 (1.25m) resulted in same so "they" said. On simplex the Kenwood beats all 4 Baofengs big time. UV5R's are decent radios for what they are. I'm a happy ham and a happy GMRS user. We'll talk Randy into being a happy Tech ham sooner or later. Maybe even a General or even an Extra ;-) haha

Ex-pilot here. Only spurious emission that ever affected flying was an actual FM music station that had some issues and managed to step on ATC frequency. We were never at risk as there are "No Radio" (NORDO) procedures for that occurrence. Your cell phone puts out way more spurious emissions than most radios would..we could hear it on our headsets any time someone's phone was about to ring.
@danielji27422 жыл бұрын
Yea, i remember hearing the interference on my radio when the cell phone was about to ring. Was that the 3G network?
@GoSlash272 жыл бұрын
I second that. I work in an EMI lab, and I have to regularly tell everyone within 50' of our EMI receiver to put their cellphones into airplane mode whenever we're scanning the 200 MHz to 1 GHz range. That crap bleeds right into our receivers through the display and ruins our scan. It's happened so often that I can tell which provider the offending phone is using. Wi-fi modems and LED light bulbs are also major offenders. I'm pretty sure any of these culprits dump out more spurious emissions than a little cheap Chinese handheld radio.

@andybyers59642 жыл бұрын
Here is a quick and easy test anyone can perform to see if their Baofeng (or other radio) is guilty of transmitting 'spurious RF emissions'! 1. Start with two radios, preferably some distance apart (ask a friend to help) 2. Configure Radio 'A' to use frequency 146.5200 Mhz 3. Configure Radio 'B' to use frequency 146.5200 Mhz 4. Transmit (PTT) from Radio 'A' and observe the signal received on Radio 'B' 5. Configure Radio 'B' to use frequency 439.5600 Mhz (3rd Harmonic) 6. Transmit (PTT) from Radio 'A' and observe the signal received on Radio 'B' If you heard the Radio 'A' transmission on Radio 'B' in step 6, this is very bad! This reveals that Radio 'A' is transmitting on Multiple Frequencies every time the PTT button is pressed. If you have a scanner or SDR radio, you can also test the 2nd Harmonic (293.0400 Mhz), 4th Harmonic (586.0800 Mhz) and 5th Harmonic (732.6000 Mhz) to verify that your Baofeng is transmitting on no less than 5 seperate frequencies every time you use the PTT button! These are not inconsequential static RF emissions, this is your voice being simultaneously transmitted loud and clear across multiple frequencies and bands! Repeat this simple test with all of your radios. Which radios do not exhibit this poor behavior? Hey Randy! Pleae do a follow up video and show us your Baofeng test results! (BTW, Baofeng are not the only radios that fail this test)
@craigdavidson29772 жыл бұрын
Andy, that's a great idea for a do-it-yourself test. If you start with the radios next to each other and you verify the 'spurious' signal is present on 439.56 and then walk away with one radio and see how far apart the radios need to get before you can't hear that spurious signal. That will give you a very clear understanding of how low power that spurious signal is and how close you have to be to even hear it. Hey Randy, all you need is one of those ham radio friends of yours to legally key the transmitter and you can walk away with the receiver and you have another video to put on youtube. I'm getting excited to see the results.
@craigdavidson29772 жыл бұрын

The most dangerous thing about a UV5R is poking yourself in the eye with the antenna. The second most dangerous thing is poking yourself in the other eye. The actual danger from these radios is the battery packs. The reason I have a Wouxun HT with no battery is because the battery I had for it shorted out and began trying to catch on fire, and a rapid disassembly took place to stop that. The reason I have a UV5R now is because buying a whole new radio was cheaper than getting a new battery for the Wouxun. The UV5R ended up being a better radio anyway. But anything with a battery is potentially dangerous. It is a risk we all accept with our phones and watches and other gadgets.

@NotaRubicon Hi, I am new into hobby and learning a lot from your YT series (subscribed). I will try to stay on topic, would be great to have someone with spectrum analyzer on the show comparing cheap Baofan with more expensive Yaesu for example, like one of the commentators did. However, I have another question since I am learning and I might be doing something wrong or bad at googling. I got myself Baofang UV-5R and blocked (how I found your YT channel) TX on both UHF and VHF until I get a license, so mostly using it for listening. I have also legal in Europe 0.5W PMR frequency walkie-takies from French company called Decathlon (cheap store for sports equipment). When I transmit using these walkie-talkies I can hear on the other one from the pair voice clear on just one channel (no CTCSS or DSC I turned those off) meanwhile on Baofang UV-5R I hear myself bleeding to 1-2 channels around the actual channel I am transmitting on. Both channels A and B are set to the same frequency 1 channel lower than I am transmitting on. For example I transmit on channel 7, but I hear myself on Baofang on channel 7 clearly and pretty clear also on channel 6. Why is that because both receiving channels I set to the same channel. When I step both A/B to even lower channel I stop hearing myself. On the PMR walkie-takie this does not happen and I am not using any tones. Thank for explanation ! Maybe it's something trivial or maybe some commenter can respond!

Not a safety issue, but a poor quality or damaged transmitter that transmits "large" amounts of energy on the harmonics of the intended frequency will reduce the effectiveness of your radio, since the 4-5 watts is being spread out over each of the frequencies. This could mean that 50% or more of your power lost as a result

I wonder if this had anything to do with the fat boy/ davemade amps in close proximity to their bodies. Can you tell me is this even possible? Does the emission come from the antenna or the radio/ amp itself?

Jimmy, I have seen no reputable research studies that have linked radio waves to cancer. Not one single study. However, Radio waves when absorbed will generate heat. That's how dummy loads work. Its also how microwave ovens work to heat food but they are a thousand Watts. Baofeng radios are 5 Watt transmitters and the Spurious emissions are micro Watts.

Spurious RF emissions is BS in radios like the Baofengs. Most of the time people are traveling/moving around with these radios, so the chance if disturbing anything is as good as zero.
