I much prefer BFS personally. Spinning has its place and takes more skill to be accurate than a BFS reel. Line twists, controlling trajectory/speed...all that is easier for me with BFS. I fish tons on BFS and other than sub 1gr lures, I'll pick BFS. The fun factor as said in the video is all to the individual. People hating on BFS don't really need to. Some people prefer them functionally, some don't. Some people think they are not worth it, some do. Instead of posting negative comments, there are other ways to display your preferences with spinning. This guy recently started BFS fishing and is just giving his opinion in a very clean way. Rawrfishing does it his way, I do it my way, Angler Saito does it his own way. We all fish and like catching fish. As long as it is ethical, who cares how it is done???

A lot of his information is just wrong. I've fished for forever and love bfs but unless you're 100% dialed in with bfs specific gear you cannot do it well on baitcasters. Spinning is way more forgiving and capable. I have no idea why people think baitcasters are more accurate than spinning reels, by design they are superior.

I don't know that the advantages of a BFS over a spinning reel are that great but I just love the feel of a baitcaster in my hand. And I love trying out new gear and new styles. I do agree with #2; I feel you can blast off more casts with a baitcaster over a spinning reel. Ok, I agree with #3 too 🤪. Great comparison Ethan!

I definitely think BFS is not necessary for 99% of anglers but I do see why people use it. It does have advantages, but most of them are not that important for anglers. Regardless, it is fun XD and I am like you, I like to try new techniques.

I am impressed with your argument for BFS fishing. I am a spinning combo only person. I must admit that i find it hilarious that the industry is trying to expand their low profile baitcasting equipment outside of bass fishing by packaging a "system". I know I'm late to the show.... but I just found out about BFS a couple of months ago, that said I have never liked spinning gear, it feels unbalanced and wonky to me. started fishing as a kid with Zebco 33 , so the graduation to a baitcaster was a natural transition for me. my local lakes get a lot of pressure, so switching to finesse is key. the BFS systems just appeals to me, I gave away all my spinning gear, and I have 3 BFS combos, + my six standard combos ... I think I'm covered. and thanks for the videos !!

BFS started in Japan, and where a lot of anglers are really kinda limited to where they fish. Not a lot of lakes, large reservoirs, or farm ponds like the US has. It forced them to go smaller on basically everything. I bought a Dobyns rod and didn't realize that it was basically for the BFS setup, so I had to purchase a new reel for it. It may be great for smaller bodies of water and that will be great. Thanks for the info and fish on👍

One of the reasons people choose BFS over UL spinning is simply because the slim profile of a BC reel looks cooler than a spinning reel that sticks out. A lot of young anglers will choose a baitcaster over a spinning reel because it doesn't look "old school." And when it comes to making accurate, stylish casts-check out Japanese BFS Angler Saito-it's always done with a baitcasting setup. I've yet to see a video of someone working a UL spinning setup with the same style and finesse as Saito. As for the "fun" factor, some say you "feel" the fight more with a baitcaster than a spinning reel, because it sits on top and closer to your hand-think of a low-riding hardtail (suspension-less) Harley that sits closer to the tarmac than a higher bike with suspension.

you can slow down (feather) casts with spinning reel so your lures don't overcast using fingertip on edge of spool ,or if you are not worried about serious anglers laughing at you, a small spincast reel will let you make fast casts and instant retrieves before lure can sink and snag in shallow water for 1/10th of the cost of BFS

I ended up giving away most of my spinning tackle and bought a whole line of Daiwa Tatulas (100, 150, 200). They are so amazing. I kept 2 spinning setup for bait fishing for perches. Other than that, all my lure fishing is with baitcasters. I have yet to find a BFS setup that hasn't given me problems, like lines getting stuck between spool and frame and backlashing when I am trying to get some distance. I know the $200 plus BFS setup from Daiwa and Shimano would solve this problem but I can't justify spending that much for a reel I hardly use. I fish more for big fish in the salt and lake so I use heavier lures most of the time so I rather spend more on bigger tackle.

efficiency isn't just about maximizing time, but to conserve energy. Blue lining adventures deep into the mountain and find that body of water that you want to fish is already tiring. Weight of reels can also help and BC reels are normally lighter than spinning reels and especially at the cheaper reels. To get a light spinning reel, you must have an expensive reel and a small reel. I hate size 500 reels as they have too much line twists. so i opt for size 1k and a shallow spool. but any how, good job!

I feel like no one is mentioning exactly why I have gotten into bfs. I mean efficiency does explain it in a vague and general manner I guess. I like the fact I get my finger back on the line far quicker/more immediately after the lure hits the water and I find I detect those right as it hits the water strikes much sooner and catch a few more of the fish that bite at that time. I also don’t have to take my finger off the line to reel/thus my finger is on the line more during reeling in slack and i feel more bites/thus hopefully detecting and catching more of this super dooper lightly biting fish that are nearly impossible to feel sometimes. Thus catching a few more fish. Particularly with light ned rigs.

I feel that there is less slack in the line with a baitcaster then a spinning reel when you go to set the hook. Maybe that is because of the higher gear ratio on your average baitcaster you are able to pick up any slack faster. I feel more directly connected to the lure with a baitcaster. That being said I use a spinning reel most the time for bottom fishing lures. Texas, ned, drop shot. Then using a baitcaster for a jig or punching rig for flipping. I have just purchased a bfs setup cause why not fishing light tackle is fun. I can't wait to get a nice fish on some 6lb line lol. The tactical bassin guys are the ones that turned me onto it.

I got the kastking zephyr a couple months ago. It's a fun reel for about $70. They get way more expensive. I'm not expert with bfs but I really like the one i got. Rawr fishing has a bunch of videos on bfs tackle.

I use KastKing BFS Reels; they have the Zephyr; the Valiant Eagle BFS and also the MegaJaws BFS. Kinda like a good; better; best scenario.

Much depends on your budget. Low price favorites of mine are the kastking zephyr, fishband gh100, and the tsurinoya spirit fox. The name brands cost more but they are better built and usually perform better too. The abu garcia alc-bf7 is nice, the daiwa alphas air (not the 2020) is good, and the shimano scorpion bfs (shimano also recently announced a new slx bfs reel). Above that the sky is the limit. Shimano aldebaran bfs and conquest bfs, new 2020 daiwa alphas air, even modified vintage ambassadeur 2500 and 1500 reels are very capable reels.

Line twist, wind knots, and closing and opening the bail gets old. I can fish much faster with BFS and it just feels better in hand. Still use my spinning reels all the time. Love both!! ❤❤
@FishAnything Жыл бұрын
Nothing wrong with either option - just need to use what works best for your style and application. If I was doing a lot of creek fishing with 1/16oz - 1/8oz lures, I would likely use a BFS all the time.

Right of the rip. The opening statement to the video I heard “in a lot of situations, the bfs reel isn’t necessarily better than a spinning reel, but there are a few” I already don’t want it. That’s telling me this is a niche product that no one actually really needs.
@FishAnything10 ай бұрын
It’s not a practical thing for most anglers. It is niche and works well for specific anglers but for most, it’s just another example of consumerism.

You can feather and slow your line down with a spinner as well. I'm pretty satisfied with my accuracy with my spinners and (personally) don't identify with that perceived "deficiency"
@KitebuildingGenius3 жыл бұрын
Lightly use your cranking hand to cup the spool and let the line gently run across the pad of your hand at the base of your fingers, increasing pressure (or vice versa) as required. Takes some practice but it works
@FishAnything3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I do this too. I agree that enough time with a spinning reel can give you solid accuracy as well. I don't think either is a bad option! I just like fishing numerous ways haha

Looking to invest in a Ned rig rod. Do you recommend a light power or medium light? Also, do you have a contact for us to ask fishing questions?
@garyrothweiler53843 жыл бұрын
I bought all ML rods for my BFS reels; I will mostly fish Neds and Micro Finesse Jigs with them.
@FishAnything3 жыл бұрын
If you are going BFS, I think either honestly works fine. I had the Shimano Sensilite 7' Light Casting Rod and it was a fantastic BFS Ned Rig Rod. I swapped it out for the new Dobyns Sierra 7' L and that will also be perfect. But ML is usually what I recommend for Neds in spinning so that should work fine on BFS too. The one thing to keep in mind is whether it will load up on a cast if you go lighter than a typical Ned. I like the L because it is more versatile for lighter gear too.

Japanese and European 0g ultralight rods are exclusively spinning. I'm out here using 0.5g lures, otherwise I would like to try BFS. It's not even about saving time, just the ergonomics of not having to hold the line with your finger to cast, such a small thing, but huge annoyance.

Number one reason is to be able to throw very small lures and baits, where most of the time the smaller fish seem hungrier, they put up a good fight as well, the big fish are a little wiser and a bit finicky, BFS increases the chance that you will catch something besides a cold... 😎
@FishAnything2 жыл бұрын
I tend to think that is the case for any ultralight presentation (spinning or BFS). The BFS, with experience, simply helps with accuracy in tight areas.
@krustysurfer2 жыл бұрын

I'm starting out as an angler and recently dipped my hands into budget BFS equipment namely with the KastKing Zephyr and the Tsurinoya Dragon rod, loved throwing a ned rig on it. Seeing how it's going to be another year since this video was posted, have your thoughts on the advantages changed?
@FishAnything2 жыл бұрын
No major changes in thoughts. I think BFS is a niche in the market which helps certain anglers but I don't think it is necessary for everyone. Fun way to fish regardless!

I’m being fishing with BFS gears roughly about 4yrs now I love it a lot. But I don’t understand why some people will bad mouth to me about how dumb it is and how it’s a wasting of money and time on BFS. To me it’s just another form of fishing style like fly fishing. For example you can use a spinning setup to do trout fishing or fishing in general yet some people prefer fly fishing setup instead. But I don’t see nobody bad mouth about fly fishing, but as soon as someone mentioned bfs, you’ll be call crazy and waste of time and money. It sad that bfs is some form of taboo in terms of fishing that kinda weird right? I’m just saying, But these days bfs become more and more popular and it’s good to see the genre grow and embrace.

Spincast reels are more similar to spinning reels by how the line comes off the spool. Kinda a push button spinning reel.

Definitely a weird technique. And the backlashes can be brutal lol. But all in all, I think it has a role for certain anglers!

The main advantage seems to me to be extra sales for tackle suppliers! Other than that maybe just the challenge of learning a different skill.

Yeah it is definitely a really "niche" type of fishing. Wouldn't say it is necessary for most anglers. Trout fishing in tight quarters, there is an advantage.
@jonathancaldwell-km5ig Жыл бұрын
In my opinion the only advantage of a bfs reel is no wind knots. Everything else can be fixed with practice. No wind knots but you can now backlash, easy to skip with a spinning reel, it all evens out.

Those who do mainly saltwater, bfs just isn't for you, we do ultralight, micro jigging from shore, ajing, and cast further is the only way we could reach the target, not to mention bfs needs way too much to care on saltwater environment, I guess there's a pros and cons in both so why not buy both right to suite our needs, cheers

Line twist is worse for me on a spinning reel. I can get out most bad backlash but one bad line twist and I have to cut.
@ponycarguy3 жыл бұрын
I do get them for sure. But generally a few pulls of the line or a step back will get it out. Rarely get the bad bad ones anymore but it does occasionally happen. But I get similar issues with spinning reels too due to the line twist and loops jumping off the spool. Its not quite as bad with braided line but it still happens occasionally.
@FishAnything3 жыл бұрын
Victor this is 100% valid! You definitely waste time with backlashes however I should clarify... --- More efficient for anglers with lots of baitcasting experience and limited backlashes --- Less efficient for amateur baitcasters Long term, with practice, you gain efficiency and will backlash very little.

Bfs is to present lighter lures to the SAME fish you wouldn't have room to maneuver a full size rod and reel to reach
@FishAnything2 жыл бұрын
True! But one could argue that a short spinning outfit could do the same thing. To me, the value of BFS is the accuracy it can achieve over a spinning reel by slowing down your spool.

@@FishAnything agreed, I think it's more about efficiency in casting in small spaces or presenting more versatile baits to large fish. But we all know....it's just fun to fish lol
@alex1116832 жыл бұрын
There honestly really isn't. For me it's just fun!! When you're going that thin of line diameter and extremely light weight lures, an equivalent spinning set up will always outcast and easily be more manageable in terms of user error and finesse spinning gear is cheaper. BUT when streams are small enough and a long cast isn't required. BFS is so freaking fun! I have 3 BFS reels and always look to use them before my spinning gear.
