Why would you want to put use an acrylic platter on your turntable? Other than looking great, acrylic offers a number of benefits to the sound, from the dense material, to the low resonances. In this video, we'll go over those benefits.
The acrylic platter comes with the RT85 Reference Turntable, but you can easily upgrade on your RT82, RT83 or RT84 turntable.

A heavy, dense, sonically exception piece of frosted acrylic could be what your turntable needs. These are the benefits of an acrylic platter.
There are all sorts of different platters and mats that can be used on our turntable. Felt, rubber, cork, leather, metal, even glass, and they all have their own pro's, con's, and peccadilloes that make them unique. But one of our favourites is an acrylic platter.
The RT85 Reference turntables come with an acrylic platter, but it is very simple to upgrade the platter on the RT82, RT83, or RT84. You cannot upgrade to the acrylic platter on the RT80 and RT81 because of the location of the motor.
These are the two reasons why you want an acrylic platter.
The first is that it's heavy, and dense, weighing in at 3 pounds. The weight helps contribute to a more consistent speed, and improved wow and flutter. Think of a rotating door at the front of a big office building. It's hard to get going, but when it does, inertia kicks in and it spins consistently, reducing wow and flutter.
This density also makes it great at minimizing vibrations. It is extremely dense, so things like vehicles passing, people walking by, or other environmental factors, are greatly reduced, or eliminated, because of the platter. The high density damps reverberations by trapping and dissipating energy.
Second, the material. Acrylic is closer to vinyl than other platter types. As a result, acrylic has an analogous resonant frequency to vinyl records, which cuts down on vibrations and reverberations. The material sounds so good that there are even platter mats made out of acrylic.
To demonstrate this, this is a metal platter. This ringing will be picked up by the stylus as your record plays. Granted, it will be very faint, but when it is reduced, all of those subtleties in the music come alive. Bass is more defined, midrange is richer, and signal clarity is greater. And this is acrylic.
