I have used nothing but Dr. Slick scissors (so far...) and "agree" that their Microtip is not (to me) that much finer compared to their 4" All Purpose pair I own too. The 4" All Purpose are the workhorse pair for me. However, I'm inspired to try razor scissors if the tip is tighter. Thanks Curtis - this was an awesome video!

Excellent comparisons and great video - thank you. I would like to make a couple of observations: (1) I tie with scissors in hand start to finish (don't set them down between tying steps) and how comfortable the scissors are in hand makes a big difference - nothing was said about scissor design for comfort in hand - it goes way beyond finger hole size - how does the scissor fit in hand for comfort and safety? (2) Scissors don't have to be discarded when they lose their edge. Some (not all) are easily sharpened by the owner if you know how. Some will be re-sharpened by the manufacturer for a small fee if you don't know how to do it. There are also scissor sharpening tools and "kits" that can do the job. I think tyers should know that good scissors don't have to be retired after a few months. (3) You can find excellent scissors, not specifically made for fly tying, in fabric stores if you are "picky" and don't lose sight of the features you want - and often for under $25 (watch for sales and 40% off coupons).

You're right, Steve, fly tying scissors can be resharpened. The ones that bedevil most people are the serrated blades, which require specialized equipment and techniques to do properly. I'm a professional sharpener and have learned to sharpen all sorts of small fiddly scissors, and I can now do all types of fly-tying scissors. I usually charge between $5 and $10, depending on how much work is involved. Much cheaper than a new pair of $35 Dr. Slicks. I can also adjust and lubricate the scissors, which is sometimes all that is needed but also often requires special equipment.

I would be curious if you all have an opinion on the best pair of left handed scissors, if they even exist?

Nice info. Tiemco Razor will be my next pair. I currently use dovo 44 scissors and they have been amazing. They have held a great edge, like double or triple the life of other scissors I have. Also withstand drops onto the floor or table like a champ. I have ruined the tip of several razor scissors dropping them. But after a couple years I am just now noticing they are not as sharp as they used to be. I think the tiemco razor might be about the same scissor (sort of looks like they robbed the dovo design), BUT they have bigger thumb holes and look to maybe have a sharper point which would be nice.

Pound for pound I cant go past the Loon's. Own several. Razor and all purpose. Great edge and last. Getting about 5-6 months of production tying out of em before they get demoted. I found with tying alot of synthetics it killed my Dr. not-so-Slicks. I found craft fur, SF Blend, and Laser dub a good test for scissors. Correct, the Tiemco are great, till ya dropped them into timber floor- took off both tips. I now have fantastic wire scissors. Ha. Have you tried the Petitjean scissors ( you know- the over priced re-labeled Surgical scissors)? ;- ) Be interesting how they rate... cheers.

Im curious, am i the only one who have owned several Tiemco scissors without tension knob that wouldnt adjust in the regular bolt with a screwdriver? I have broken screw drivers trying to tighten these. Kind of a bummer in that price range.

I love my open loop Ice scissors, and although I don't tie commercially anymore, I still tie a thousand or so flies every year and mine have lasted for five years now. I have learned however, how to sharpen them with a diamond stone. Five minutes and they are good as new.

I too like those. I got used to how I am able to adjust how they fit on my fingers and they stay sharp very long. I have the all purpose straight and curved. Probably not as fine a point as some that Curtis reviewed. A very thoughtful and informative presentation Curtis, thanks.

Greatings from Denmark. Im sorry, this is just too help you, I am a hairdresser, and you treat your scissors wrong, use your tomp and your ringfinger for cutting, then the pressure on your scissor is wright. Ask your hairdresser where he/she get threre scissors sharpent, then you dont have too buy new all the time. Thank you for the tour too Whiting, I wish it was me. Say hello too your big body(Cheet?) hees cute good videos

All my scissors are RAZOR sharp. Why? Because I sharpen and strop them every week. I have a pair that have lasted me well over 20 years and costed under $10. They cut like razors. Nobody needs a fancy pair of scissors if you have a couple sharpening stones and a leather strop and some stropping paste.

I'm left-handed (Curtis) and I got tired of having to track down left-handers in school, so I switched well before I started tying. Anyway, I know Anvil had some a while ago but most lefties that I know use the standard tying scissors (holes are the same) with no issues. The cutting motion is a bit different in relation to the blades' positions but I'd guess you can just work around that?
