What are the best "starter" reptiles? And Why??

I actually bought a green iguana as my second pet, and I did take a nasty bite from him when I was around 14 years old. Got him for $20 lol sadly had to rehome him, I didn't realize how much space he would need as an adult. My uncle took care of him though.

Green Iguana was my first rep back in the late 80s. Glad I had a super cool Grandma that let me turn one of her rooms into an enclosure. She actually loved that lizard and Mr. Green (my iguana) actually liked her a lot. He got way too big to stay at the apartment me and my mom were in.

The more underrated species, the rosy boa. Doesn't get too big, eats like a champ, comes in many colors, and very long lived and very simple care.

My first lizard as a kid in the 80s was a green iguana and first snake was an albino burm. They were both awesome and died of old age. I was very lucky and definitely wouldn’t recommend either for beginners. I still can’t believe the pet shops sold them to me as beginner reptiles.

Today I learned bearded dragons have mild venom. All these years, I never knew that! Ball python is honestly not the first pet reptile I'd tell someone to get. They can be high maintenance if you live in a low humidity area. I'd honestly probably go with something like a leopard gecko or a bearded dragon. I started with a red tail boa, and while I love that snake, I wish I would have started smaller lol. I moved onto venomous, mainly elapids, but I still have my ball pythons and boas that I love and cherish! Can't handle a cobra the way you can handle and bond with a python or boa.🤣I agree with you, nobody should start with venomous. In fact, I would recommend most people NOT get into venomous. They definitely aren't animals the average person should own, and if you do want to pursue owning them, PLEASE get a mentor and learn first.

I like the idea of one grumpy iguana hospitalizing an entire town because as each person goes in to feed it while the other caretakers are in the hospital, they themselves receive injuries requiring medical treatment.

I'm 63, I've been keeping reptiles since 1991. Heat rocks have always been crap. Almost burned my first ball python... it lasted less than a week in my list of tools.

When it comes to starter venomous, yes. Or in depth more on any topuc, yes. Smaller audience i can be less filtered too

I personally would never recommend carpet for anything especially leopard geckos they can get their toe nails stuck and rip them off. Also very hard to clean carpet. Paper towel, tile or sand/soil/coconut mix would be better for babies.

Don't forget about the blues tongue skinks guys 🤟 can't really mention a ball python like lizards and not talk about them 😉 they are the true kings of Goldilocks lizards 🦎

I had a ballpython male that was 1 meter and 40 cm. It was big and needs a bigger enclosure than those tubs. I nodes ball python like the head of a lamp. In the wild they come above ground to bask. So since I know that, I will never recommend to keep them in tubes.
