One of the other reasons we saw Seals and Special Forces in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia wearing Rolex Submariners was that if you were in trouble, your watch could be used to get you out of trouble. Even in a poor backwater village, people knew a Rolex had a high value, so it could be used as a barter item to get you to safety, if needed. Probably would work today too. Same goes for US Dollars.

I remember growing up as a kid and my grandpa always had a solar gshock of some sort on. I thought it was the coolest thing ever growing up and it made me always want one. My uncle was also in the Marines and I remember him gifting me a gshock when I was 7 or 8

cool video, i love the G-Shock, wore them throughout my time in the Army and have one on my wrist right now. my favorite combat watch is the watch that i wore in combat, simply because it did its job. in Afghanistan and in the LE field after the military, i wore a Luminox 0200 Black Sentry. it is the cheapest Luminox on the market, extremely low visibility, and has never failed me. i know Luminox gets a bad rep for riding the SEAL coattail. but its done extremely well for me.

Thank you for sharing your real world experience. Above all else the watch needs to be able to do its job under pressure.

Cool video & interesting considerations, Morgan! I usually flew with a Citizen Navihawk (it had a whizwheel on it for calculations), a plain square G-Shock 5600, or a titanium solar Casio Pathfinder (that my squadron bought everyone in 2011 with “end of the year” funds). I’ve still got the Pathfinder & it works well! I’d be curious if the flashing (pulse measuring) lights on the underside of my Garmin Instinct are NVG compatible. We took off, flew, & landed on NVGs frequently & a non-compliant light on the flight deck (especially a randomly-flashing one) would not be good.

I don’t think that would be an issue since the lights are shining into your skin, but there’s always a chance that you could Knock the watch about and accidentally discharge that light source. I think this is one of those cases where you would have to use your best judgement on whether wearing that garmin is worth it

I used a Gshock in the USMC, basic model. My kid was issued a Gshock in NSW. Not sure of exact model. A lot of dudes rock Rolex’s in my current job. I use a Garmin Tactix Delta.

Rolexes are like G Wagons. They are so nice you forget how capable they actually are. They are high quality beasts.

Not quite a G-Shock but definitely g-shock adjacent, my PT/field watch for the last ~3 years has been a Casio Pro-Trek PRG-270, got it on Amazon for ~$100, tough as nails, ABC, solar powered, got tons of memories with it at this point, not quite G-shock level durable but its held up to everything the military has put it through so far, wouldnt trade it for the world

Took my G-Shock AWG-101 with me in every single deployment from 2007 to 2018 and every single pistol and rifle Qual. Sh*t, even on my 3 year long worst deployment ever. Tampa Florida 😂🤣 #8411
