There's another big problem, in East Asian countries the younger generation is more open minded about dating a foreigner than older generation (like they said in the video). Younger generation tend to have a lot of respect to elders (and obviously parents) so their opinion is really important & not only about dating but life decisions in general. Keep in mind that this doesn't apply to every east asian family out there.

I’d say it’s the older generation. Koreans have a lot of respect for their elders. So if their parents don’t approve of the relationship its very possible it won’t last or it will be hard to get approval.

@no name understand that there are also cultural differencies and it's okay, things can still work out even tho two people come from totally different backrounds but you have to be open to it, also while the person is learning korean the other could learn english to improve the communication. I got your point and I agree with it only to some extent. In a relationship both people should make efforts. Open up a bit :)

It's a very conservative country, a few years ago they would literally stare at and take photos of people that had blue eyes if they would see then on the bus etc BC there were so few people. Also Most Koreans would stay in Korea and would very rarely live abroad which lead to generations that always kept to their people. It's quite a big change in such a short amount of time, they are far from multi culti so they really stick to their culture. Also, you should adapt to every country's culture you're living in, ofc you should keep a part of your own culture with you but it's rlly important to adapt especially in a conservative country..

As a typical South Korean guy in Seoul in his 20s, my biggest inconvenience with dating a foreign girl is not the difference in language or culture, but the stereotype of South Korean guys made by media. Whether it's Western girls or Asian girls, many foreign girls seem to expect all South Korean guys to be "That guy" in K-Drama and K-Pop. And this big expectation burdens me. Since I'm neither romantic nor cute. Although, I've watched quite a few Hollywood movies, I don't have any fantasies that all Western girls are attractive and beautiful.

PREACH say it louder for those in the back!! Feel you so much as a woman who witnessed the weeboos vibe I'm just laughing watching all thoses kboos especially those pretending not be, experienced their désillusions. Their jumping on Korean guys so confident about the white privilege, then after few months and amount of gosthing, they go back home making vid about how awful was their "crush" 😏 The things is kboos as weeboos or all kind of asian fetishist assuming that because of being white the Asian will instantly fell for them. But they missed the part about fell (for sex with them) They never say getting married, and in fact even they are white they are the kind who white guys (and maybe others who live in west) doesn't find them attractive and don't date at all. So they watch drama and believe that asian are thosr who will date them. 😏

@Wuddup Dope lol maybe they are just tourists? I mean Korea is still full of Koreans, and Asians in Europe or America are still quite small in numbers, so it is possible that they don't know a lot of foreigners bc their workplace or school does not have any. And for the dating thing. The bottom line is you have to like that person and that person has to like you in order to start a relationship. Language, culture, and religion, however, do play an important role in a relationship bc they can cause conflict due to miscommunication and different ideologies.

All these people saying there's a language barrier, I'm currently learning Korean and it's not too hard honestly. Also it's actually pretty good to date someone whose native language you're not familiar with. @@ifeeltraped1601 well just try to keep practicing daily and follow Korean people on social media so every time you'll open an app you're practically "forced" to read or hear it! Also try websites like Memrise to learn at a steady pace :) For pronunciation it can be helpful to watch Korean shows, use Korean subtitles if they're available, it's way easier to listen and repeat what natives say while seeing the words on screen 🙂 and always write down words or phrases on a sheet of paper maybe even get a whole exercise book only for practicing writing Hangul! Those are the things that work for me so no guarantee they'll help you too - good luck!

i’m not really interested in this but the only question i have is: would it still be a problem if the foreigner already knows korean? Then you’d be able to teach your partner about your culture if you’re interested? Isn’t that what a relationship is about - learning from each other?
@vjbkbkllhgvjhbki5019
@vjbkbkllhgvjhbki5019 5 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of people would be down to it if the foreigner already know the language and their culture or even grew up in Korea. Usually when they talk about foreigners, they usually image someone who lives in a different country and doesn't speak Korean. Hence why they list language barrier and culture differences as the downsides bc they can create conflict in a relationship.
@user-ru3zw6lz9h

I’m engaged to a korean guy who also didn’t think once in his life he would date a foreigner, I speak korean not perfectly but I can survive, he is also trying to learn Italian and he knows english a bit, his family was worried at first because they actually never even talked with a foreigner in their life so they also worried about the things said in this video but as soon as they saw I could speak korean enough to have a conversation they accepted me happily, they talked with my parents on skype and it was a really fun experience! So, this is all to say that the downsides are there only if u are not willing to do anything for the other and the most important thing is understanding their culture and learn. And yeah you can meet some close minded people who don’t accept you, but that can happen with any relationship not only with Koreans. The barriers are inside people! There are no barriers for love! ❤️

IMO, I don't think language barrier is a problem. I am an American (native English speaker) and dated a Korean man. At the time, I spoke very little Korean, and he spoke very little English. BECAUSE OF THAT we didn't fight. I think we were very conscientious of each others feelings and body language, so we got along well. Plus, we were patient with each other because of the language barrier. This also proved true with a former roommate of mine from China who speaks Mandarin, and very little English. We never argued. Got along so well that we are best friends now. Thankfully her English improved, because my Mandarin didn't LOL. I think patience and understanding negates the language barrier.

I think a relationship is based on love, trust, loyalty and friendship. Besides if you are involved in a stable relationship and you love the person who you are with all the barriers can be crossed. Relationships makes you grow, progress, improve yourself, learn and make you better. Is fascinating learn a new language, culture and be a part of his/her world. I'm a foreigner in Spain so for me to learn Spanish, new traditions, culture etc made me more rich intellectual and make me grow up as a person. For majority of Koreans seams like the whole world it resumes at the Korean border.. If you think about it is kinda sad. I hope younger generations will be more open minded 😊

We've learned to laugh and enjoy our language mistakes and to me he makes English sound adorable, but I sometimes get my Chinese screwed up, but I will keep trying because he is my soul mate!

One thing that I do find confusing is how South Koreans get surprised having foreigners in sk or some parents wouldn't like the idea of their son or daughter dating a foreigner. Like I just find it strange like even the thought that you need consent to date like if I like someone I'm going to date them regardless of my parents. I'm dating a korean man. We're both at our 30s. The only problem it's the language. Well I'd like to say that koreans are dating foreigners but when it comes to marriage.. it's really hard.. For both. Actually. Usually the couple breaks up.. Me and my boyfriend are talking about that and it's like there's no exit from this problem..

@Eleonora Ruoppo Hi :) Well I've heard about mixed kids at school but this is not our problem. Usually korean men's mothers don't like foreign girls. But still this isn't a problem for us since his mother it's not her real mom so she doesn't express her opinion. And his father agree with this relationship. The only but huge problem is the language. Believe me it's huge. At the beginning, when you just date someone and you're having fun everything is fine. But when it gets serious you realize that not being able to use the language as a native keeps you also away from adapting to the other society if you're going to spend your life there. So our problem it's the language. I speak broken korean and he speaks broken english (my mother language it's not even english). Till now it was enough for us. But.. how could we raise children like that? ? Could we both enjoy and laugh about korean jokes? And so on.. Really... it's such a hard situation. Right now I can't improve my language skills because I have no time. Same him . Anyway.. I'm sorry for telling you my personal problem haha :) I don't know if love is enough.. really.. i have no idea what's going to happen

I don't think people really understand how wise the "communication would be difficult... especially when we fight" comment was. Even though I am learning Korean, the main reason I wouldn't date a native, or non-English fluent Korean is because trying to explain intricate and specific emotions is very difficult, even in my/your own native language. We all struggle to communicate ourselves well in our native languages when we are having serious disagreements/fights with our loved ones so I honestly can't imagine how frustrating it would be if you are trying to have a serious, in-depth emotional talk to someone you are in a relationship with if you are not at a native level of fluency in the language they speak. I mean how many times have you had a misunderstanding with a loved one because one person took what the other person said wrong? If you are older like me probably several times in your life. Now amplify that times a thousand if you are in a relationship with someone and neither one of you are native-level fluent in the other's native language. In other words, there is a huge difference between being fluent enough to order at a restaurant or talk about sports or your day and then being fluent enough to have an hour or more long conversation with a loved one about your mixed emotions and and why you are feeling that way. So, for people who get upset with this video or disheartened just remember that dating a foreigner is not always as romantic as novels, dramas, and KZbin couples make it out to be.

Honestly. I get it. I'm from Norway and personally, I haven't seen too many interracial or different cultural relationships. And, it's mostly because we don't really think to date foreigners (not that it doesn't happen, but Norway is a predominantly white country and most people are either native Norwegian or native Scandinavian). PS: Y'all can't get mad at these people for not necessarily going for foreigners when they're seeking a long-term relationship. Like, what's the point, people will date who they want to date. Just because some Korean men are dating/married to foreign girls, does not mean they all want to be... Gee. Oh! And, stop fetishizing Korean men because you like dramas or K-pop or Asia in general. It's weird, and I hope you'll realize that.
@vee6395
@vee6395 5 жыл бұрын
@no name It's fine if you think Asian men are sexy, but please consider the cultural differences. For all you know you might not find an actual asian guy all that appealing when you meet them. As for Norwegian Sámi; I don't know if you can still call Norwegian Sámi people "Asian mixed" since it's mostly very far back in their bloodlines, so much that they themselves don't see themselves as part Asian. They don't really look it either (some do, for sure, but very few). And, a lot of Sámi culture in Norway has disappeared because of uneducated haters who thought it would be best for them to suppress their culture because it was deemed "too different". So, I can see why Koreans would me suspicious of mixing with other cultures as their's is so unique and important to them. Which is something I identify with in some ways as well. Hope this answered you question? :)

no name you really can not compare one person to everyone. Like, yes there are ones that do, but there’s also a large part that doesn’t. It’s sort of like expecting every Korean to look like your favorite k-pop Idol or k-drama actor. That’s not really all that realistic. You cannot assume that they’re all like that just because the Korean culture or Asian culture you’re exposed to is the makeup version of it. Most of the time Asians are really conservative, especially in certain areas. Again, I’m not saying they all are but the majority.

I'm in a relationship with a korean...we both speak English with each other so there's not that much of a barrier but some misunderstandings can occur since it's not the native language of both of us. At the same time I've started to learn Korean and he's learning German. Both languages are really hard for us to learn but we're trying our best. Fortunately, both of our families are really accepting, but there definitely is a language barrier there because our parents don't speak English and we're just now making some process learning Korean/German. I'd say cultural difficulties were probably the biggest issues. We had very different views on education and the pressure of achieving things. While he always felt a huge educational pressure, to get good grades even if the pressure fucks you up mentally, land a good job etc, I too wanted to try my best but never wanted to define myself through uni grades and work. I think we grew up in very different educational systems and sometimes it shows. Also dealing with problems was a huge issue at first. While I'm quite emotional, he was always taught not to complain about things if there isn't an obvious way for others to fix it. We certainly fought a lot in the beginning, but after almost two years, we got to know each other better and learned how to deal with the other person better. Dating a Korean as a foreigner is certainly not easy many times, especially in the beginning but I also wouldn't want to miss out on it and on that wonderful person I'm with!

Because of the endless requests and high degree of expectation from Korean girls in their relationship, many Korean men prefer having a foreign girl friend today. According to a statistics from Chosun Newspaper in 2016, 150.000 foreigners married Koreans and currently live in Korea. Including their children, 2 million international family live in Korea and another 2 million foreigners live in Korea. 2 out of 10 marriage in Korea is known to be an international marriage these days, and some province and farming regions even reach the number upto 6/10 are international marriages. Statistically Korea is no longer homogenous society these days. For Korean men, they prefer Chinese, Vietnamese and American wives the most followed after Japan, Canada, Philippines, Cambodia, Thai, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Russia, French, Denmark, Mexican, Indonesian, Moroccan, Turkish.. For Korean Women, American, ChineseKorean, Japanese, Canadian husbands are most favorite and Pakistani, English, Australia, French, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, New Zealand, German, Iranian, Nigerian... The report states that Korean men with French, German, English, Denmark, Swedish women drastically increased for the past few years and drastic decrease with Vietnamese women.

All I hear is language and culture. Two things, which can be learned. It's more so the willingness to actually date. I feel like once you put those two factors aside, why can't you date each other? This seems like an excuse in my opinion. I say this because white men date outside there race and have no problem, Latin men, and black men, too. I just think Asian men use that as an excuse and most cultures have both similarities and differences.

You know this video was pretty raw on it’s honesty it gave us a lot of what we needed to hear but didn’t want to know or except an because of that I think this video would get slot of negative views but me I found it insightful I mean not all are like that like they said some are open minded but some are not like America people are people with different opinions and views but I believe of two people truly care an eventuality love each other these things will not matter

I think two major ones for me would be 1. communication 2. Religion I meannn I can learn korean if I really wanted to(which I’m trying now) and my family is accepting of anyone. One big thing would be religion though...I wouldn’t change my religion no matter what haha It would be nice if we could still like eachother even with different religions.

Language barriers and cultural differences would be the biggest struggle imo. Even if you think you understand ones culture there are still things that need to be understood which may lead to differences in opinions and views.

I understand most of what they're saying, but the part about how the older generation may not accept foreigners because foreigners look different or they don't understand their culture or something to that effect really bugs me. You can learn about a culture. You don't have to deny your children/grandchildren a relationship because you refuse to learn about someone else's culture. And before anyone attacks me, I know that for some people it may just be about their culture, but this is something that really irks me. Also, the fact that someone can just deny their child/grandchild a relationship because the person looks "different" is bullshit. It's 2019 for God's sake. I understand that Korea is a largely homogeneous country, but do they know that OTHER PEOPLE in the world besides Koreans exist???

It's 2021...& unfortunately there are still found prejudices all over the world. And it may not change, ever...unless more & more people are willing to live their lives outrageously & in their own way--regardless of parental or societal pressures. I'm looking forward to just this scenario...where multiculturalism & multiracial relationships are not just tolerated but, embraced, as the norm! And prejudices are unacceptable.

The guy at 2:03 is completely spot on . I’ve been watching a couple of videos about Koreans & Foreigners so I picked up on the fact that the younger generation is way more open to interracial relationships , also noticed a lot of Kpop IDOLS particularly men are into black women . The only reason a big majority of the younger gen is hesitant to act on that openness is the face that older people don’t accept it wether it be family or strangers , they say if they do take a chance & date they couldn’t go as far as marriage & children because of not having that acceptance & discrimination they feel mixed children will get . For them I feel it’s easier to date because they can pass it off as a phase or not even tell anyone about the relationship at all . But despite all the negatives I can say that Korea is slowly changing & sometimes people set in their ways won’t change but the more the new generation opens up soon it won’t be so bad

In Canada, there are so many cultures that mix together and there are varying degrees to how “new” a person is to the country (since unless you’re Indigenous you’re technically an immigrant or descended from one) so you could have someone who’s brand new to the country or someone who’s family spans back several generations and we all still date each other. I guess I just find it very interesting that so many people have this expectation that in multi-cultural societies you HAVE to be accepting and accommodating to your partners culture/ethnicity/religion/language etc...but that same sentiment isn’t shared in other countries outside of the West despite the majority of major cities around the world being decently multi-cultural as well. I personally think that if you can’t handle having someone who has a different cultural or ethnic identity than you, then don’t date period. Relationships regardless if it’s with a foreigner or not is about respect and compromise-that’s a universal principle. And the whole language thing is kinda an excuse in my opinion. Learning languages is time consuming and perhaps a bit difficult if you don’t have a natural affinity for it, but it’s not impossible. At the end of the day, love and respect your partner and keep the relationship 50/50.
