Alcohol (also known as ethanol) has a number of effects on health. Short-term effects of alcohol consumption include intoxication and dehydration. Long-term effects of alcohol include changes in the metabolism of the liver and brain, several types of cancer and alcohol use disorder. Alcohol intoxication affects the brain, causing slurred speech, clumsiness, and delayed reflexes. Alcohol stimulates insulin production, which speeds up glucose metabolism and can result in low blood sugar, causing irritability and possibly death for diabetics.[1][medical citation needed] There is an increased risk of developing an alcohol use disorder for teenagers while their brain is still developing.[2] Adolescents who drink have a higher probability of injury including death.[2]
Even light and moderate alcohol consumption have negative effects on health,[3][4][5] such as by increasing a person's risk of developing several cancers.[6][7] A 2014 World Health Organization report found that harmful alcohol consumption caused about 3.3 million deaths annually worldwide.[8] Negative effects are related to the amount consumed with no safe lower limit seen.[9] Some nations have introduced alcohol packaging warning messages that inform consumers about alcohol and cancer, as well as fetal alcohol syndrome.[10]
The median lethal dose of alcohol in test animals is a blood alcohol content of 0.45%. This is about six times the level of ordinary intoxication (0.08%), but vomiting or unconsciousness may occur much sooner in people who have a low tolerance for alcohol.[11] The high tolerance of chronic heavy drinkers may allow some of them to remain conscious at levels above 0.40%, although serious health hazards are incurred at this level.
Alcohol also limits the production of vasopressin (antidiuretic hormone) from the hypothalamus and the secretion of this hormone from the posterior pituitary gland. This is what causes severe dehydration when alcohol is consumed in large amounts. It also causes a high concentration of water in the urine and vomit, and the intense thirst that goes along with a hangover.

My stepfather talked me into drinking alcohol on occasion when I was 16, and he was often mentally and physically abusive with me, so i was afraid he was going to abuse me if i didn't drink on occasion.

Alchol like anything else I can take or leave. Daughter of an alcoholic. I have personally witnessed the behavioural changes in an alcoholic and they are not at all pleasant!😊

Thank God I am unable to drink because I watched my spouse kill his brain with drink. Then he turned into a hateful monster because he is mad that he ruined his body. All our intimacy ended when his belly got so big I couldn’t hug him anymore, and sex isn’t fun when your positions don’t work and the Johnson doesn’t work either. Then what good are you if you don’t (or can’t) drink?

Great insights, well done. We know more about chronic alcohol use, but effects of 1-2 drinks are less talked about

Over time...Lowers vitamin A, lowers testosterone. Doesnt help vision. Boosts snoring bc relaxes throat muskles. Boosts anxiety...liver disease, depression. Good luck.

As we navigate the complex landscape of alcohol consumption, it's essential to shed light on the often-overlooked consequences that unfold over time. Beyond the immediate effects, a prolonged indulgence in alcohol can lead to a cascade of detrimental outcomes. Vitamin A levels take a hit, testosterone dwindles, and surprisingly, vision doesn't escape unscathed. The relaxation of throat muscles, while seemingly harmless, translates to an unwelcome symphony of snoring. Anxiety, liver disease, and depression weave themselves into the narrative, each a potential chapter in the book of alcohol's lasting effects. So, here's a toast to awareness - understanding the far-reaching implications of alcohol consumption may be the first step towards a healthier, more informed tomorrow. Good luck on your journey to well-being.

I hate alcoholics people. I tried alcohol had headaches and didn't like the taste, the smell, and feeling of headache, and feeling weird. I owe it all to God for letting me not like alcohol or drugs and cigarettes. Thank you! Jesus Christ!!! who is my savior.

It's sad that you say that you "hate alcoholic people" but yet you mention God. It gives a bad impression of Christians when you say you hate someone for choices that they make but then give honor the Jesus who hates no one.

Oh yeah. Since to hate onto others, because they were cursed with a disease, that you are EXTREMELY lucky to not have experienced, is SUCH a Christian thing to do. Don't you guys have a schtick for "loving thy neighbor," regardless of our differences? What about people with other diseases/disorders. Do you hate cancer patients too, since they might have to take opioids, just go get through the day? Do you also hate sick children? No? Then, in conclusion, WHAT THE FUCK. Pull your head out of your ass for those of us trying to educate ourselves on sobriety. Why you had the need to share that you "hate alcoholics," while this content is exactly targeted towards that demographic, so people know they will feel healthier and overall better when they quit? We are all literally just trying to learn something here, and yes, a huge portion of this audience is those deserving of your hate? Again, don't Christians have a thing about helping others and spreading Christ's and God's love, unconditional forgiveness, etc, aren't all y'all supposed to be big on that? Please show me the direct quote from Jesus Christ, where he said, "you must love and accept everyone. EXCEPT alcoholics. Them, you can freely hate on." Please pull your head out of your ass. Every single person watching this is and always will be worthy of help and change. Your hate has no place or power here.

A complete lack of empathy for someone who follows Jesus. If you’re going to hate unnecessarily, hate those that benefit and profit from selling alcohol rather than those suffering from its effects. Hate from others and self hatred often leads people to a place where they rely on substances to get by.
