Thank You for helping me to understand oxidation numbers. I really understand the concepts that you discussed I wish you were my professor in beginning chemistry because I understand more now than I ever had before. I am in Quantitative Chemical Analysis. For those who are listening to him and are going to upper level chemistry courses, these concepts are much needed, so, PLEASE understand them fully because they WILL!!!! show up AGAIN AND AGAIN!!! Why didn't you write the half equation of Mg starting with Mg? Why did you ignore the 2 in 2Mg (not talking about the compond. I'm talking about the lone element) Is it a rule? I only ask.. because I have a bit of a doubt in one question. 4Fe+3O2 -> 2Fe2O3. we need to make half equations on this and I got this answer 4Fe -> 2Fe2 + 3e- 3O2 + 2e- -> 2O3 It's wrong. and I don't understand why. Helppp

+zakhmi marzaki If you look at your periodic table and check a(n) element, they will have oxidation states such as -2 or +4. Some elements like Manganese will have multiple oxidation states that are positive so depending on what other element its paired with like Oxide (which has a oxidation state of -2) than manganese will be +2 to cancel out the oxidation to be equal. You should know this due to the attraction between Cations and Anions. And be careful with elements that have both charges on it's oxidation state like Sulfur which has both charges so if its paired with a element thats a negative it will be positive and vice versa. So thats how he got +3 for Al since it has an oxidation state of +3.

OVO Cow Its not Cu+ its Cu + Al2(SO4)3 The plus sign was just written too high.
