This is still a valuable study because low-poli high aesthetic can still be made into fun, cheaper to produce, games.

yeah I think this is where a lot of indies will land now. Lowpoly games like Mouthwashing 😅 out of all the lowpoly indies that ones seemed to really break through in an unexpected way

Jet Grind Radio is absolutely low poly. The inverted hull outline method requires displaying a model twice, doubling the polycount on any model. It was also very early in the console generation. What is low poly or not is a bit fuzzy, while 6th gen gaming certainly bumped up the potential for polygons, a lot of devs were using processing that power for stylization, environmental design, or to put lots of characters on screen. An example of a game which put lots of low poly objects on screen is Katamari Damacy, an extremely and definitely low poly game whose art style was also very influential. Katamari Damacy's style was very difficult for gaming press to talk about at time of release, iirc. The dominant graphics discussion focused on realism and high fidelity, but although the critical language was lacking a lot of well meaning awkward praise was offered. I think Starwing (SNES) and Alone in the Dark (PC) are also very distinctive styles. Late N64 Rareware, titles like Conker and Dinosaur Planet, are also very influential.

Nice video🎉. I love the Low poly aesthetic. I leave it as a fact: According to Xinus22 in his calculation of the size of MegaMan Legends character models. Rock Volnutt is around 140-150cm tall.

Great analysis! Always appreciate people taking the time to dissect and analyze this sort of under-looked artwork. Will definitely be using this video as a reference in my own practice.

thanks :) I feel like so much of this can be argued against but perhaps as a base to start exploring more its helpful

@@suitNtie22 A more thorough chronology could be very interesting! Keep up the good work. I'd also appreciate a look at animation specifically, though you touched on that some with the segmented vs connected mesh discussion.

To your megaman legends comment about carrying the torch from ape escape, wouldn't it be the opposite since megaman legends released 2 years prior to ape escape?
