Slim to none! I play a lot of pickup bball on the UCLA campus. During the Summer, a lot of NBA players play there. I'm the average NBA height so I don't get killed just on account of size. I get killed on account of speed, quickness, length, strength, shooting accuracy etc. etc. Even guys barely hanging on to NBA roster spots are beyond unstoppable.

Each 4 year age group in America has 5 million males. About 20% of boys played organized basketball at one point. So in every 4 year grouping about 1M boys have pursued basketball. Of that age grouping, about 150 of them will be drafted for the NBA but only 2/3rds will actually make a roster. So the math says 100 out 1M. One of 10K are the odds. Now the odds of having a sustainable career are even longer. There are a ton of players that had 2-3 year stints as journeymen and primarily played overseas after not making the cut. So I'd say 1 in 30K of having a true NBA career.

yes however that particular statistic isn't necessarily relevant to any individual. Realistically, how hard do all of those people try? Of course I am not saying that simply by trying hard to make the NBA, you will, of course that still doesn't guarantee it. However, you need to add up your personal situation's factors to get a more realistic percentage on your chances. If you have faster than average reaction time, great cardio, and are average or close to average NBA height, or if you're 7 foot, and you are training 3x more than the average basketball "pursuer" AND you are tracking the progression of your skills and adapting your training according to skill targets- then the 100 out of 1 million chance you talked about IMMEDIATELY gets raised, and you probably surpassed 95-99% of existing players with the factors i just listed. And yes that still doesn't guarantee you the NBA, and many more factors exist, but I'm saying the personal situation DOES matter, and those factors, and your effort and training do make a difference which can definitely SIGNIFICANTLY raise your chances.

@FotisNikou8 ай бұрын
nah that's arm wrestling lmao
@tu55Daniel18-ey8tt8 ай бұрын
I would disagree, I think strongman/weightlifting, and sprinting,, and swimming. Basketball cannot rely the most on genetics because by definition it isn't just testing your core abilities, like fast twitch muscle fibers for sprinting, or the big muscles for lifting, or lung capacity for say swimming, rather basketball also has a motor skills ball handling element, which requires a lot of trained skill. So in a sense thats why some people can outwork their genetics in basketball. However why I think it SEEMS to rely on genetics has more to do with the sheer VOLUME of basketball players and talent pool participating, where even if you are very skilled, there is simply too many "good genetics" guys also competing which statistically causes also many of them to be skilled, leaving less room to compensate for lack of genetics with mere training and effort. Combine that with the funding and training programs available everywhere in the country with great coaching and developed systems, and the very institution of basketball is already good at bringing out the best in all players, naturally giving the best gene guys an advantage.

Not true about Europe. Lots of talent is needed there too. You look at players who were in a simple role position in the NBA but they are a key player on a European team roster - that's the system in Europe. Every player has their role and every role is important, whereas in the NBA you have 2, 3 superstars and the rest of the players are there to fill in the gaps. Also, playing in top 20 European teams pays really well, couple millions per year contracts. Europe has no Association that generates a money pool from which the teams are fed. European teams depend strictly on their sponsors and ticket sales. Players play for glory - and when they don't play, they don't come in in some pop culture clothes. Europe is a whole different system. NBA on the other hand, loves to take a Euro player, who was very accomplished in Euro league, only to tell that player that they want him to be a spot up shooter or just pick n roll and assist guy. Euro players go mad and quit very soon - to be disrespected so much is unheard of for them. You were an important if not the most important piece on your roster in Europe, a champion, an MVP perhaps, and then to be called and be told to play a support role. This is why you see Euro player coming into the league, staying for 1,2,3 seasons and coming back to Europe - the system of having a specific role in a team is alien to Euro players. The most simple reason I can provide for why this is so the fact that Euro teams play as actual teams. No team depends on 1 player, they are all equal. In important moments, yes, perhaps, some player either rises to the challenge or is selected by the coach. Overall, players who score the most in their teams are not considered stars, cause the next night some other teammate may start to feel it, so you had your 25 points previous night, but this night you will feed me the ball, cause I'm feeling it. That's the way they play. There are no all stars, super stars, there are only teammates and occasional heroes. And if you don't respect that type of game (cause basketball is a team game not a prima donna "i'm the best, feed me the ball otherwise we lose, no defense, just offense"), you'll be hearing from your coach in a very vocal and sometimes explicit manner.

you forgot to mention its a retirement home for washed up NBA players due to how easy it is to perform there relative to NBA :D
@Triumphator616 Жыл бұрын
@@zzdahaewae Not true. NBA wants the best of the best simply so that they can make more sales. If your role is obsolete, your play style is not to any team's standards, no one will want you. Europe doesn't have that. A player is a player. No matter the style, 2 pointer, 3 pointer, dribbler, cutter, roller, everything is important in Europe - like a part of an engine. NBA teams require specific role while allstars, superstars do whatever they want. So in essence, these so-called "washed up NBA players" are great players who do not seem to be compatible with the NBA any more. NBA is looking for theatrics, cause Americans love entertainment - this increases sales. It's all about capitalism. Just offense offense offense, alley-oops, and 40 attempts for 3pointers, over 300 points final score, etc. This is what keeps the fans hooked. All those jerseys sold, Curry Curry Curry, Lebron, Lebron, Lebron, high-fiving each other when their team scores. Excellent marketing. Europe has heart, the fans are crazy and you play for glory - you don't show up in a Kyle Kuzma style to feed the American pop culture.
@Triumphator616 Жыл бұрын
@@zzdahaewae And don't get me wrong, I love the NBA, but I try to filter out that capitalism insanity that goes behind the curtain - people seamlessly unaware how much they're spending and keep feeding the hype. That's the American way. NBA feels that even this is not enough, hence why the league started promoting itself on other continents, by actually showing up with a couple of teams. And you can see that the top players are coming from Europe in the past few years, and none of them feels the need to add to the American pop culture, being all flashy off court, show up to social gatherings wearing 10 pounds of jewelry, etc. Players like Jokic will certainly not succumb to this type of life. He'd rather spend time with his family and horses back in his home country.

99% of people will never make the NBA. The NBA is one of the most physically demanding professional level sports. Along with the right build and genetics, the amount of athleticism, talent, and hard work is astronomical and insane. The worst NBA players in history who barely hang on the roster will run circles around the rest of the population with ease. This isn’t even accounting for how long you’ll stay in the NBA, it’s a business venture too. People are really better off pursuing other career’s or if they truly want it that bad go into less demanding leagues and organizations.
