I am an autistic adult. I recently turned 30. I work full-time as a special needs teaching assistant. I adore my job, even though it can be very challenging. When I was growing up, there was very minimum support for autism. I was never violent towards others. I did have a lot of anxiety issues, and I found it hard to concentrate and socialize. I would vomit from an overload of noise, and I was accused of doing it all for attention. I enjoyed the academic side of the school, but I never fitted in with the culture, particularly in high school. I would always wear my hat and refuse to take it off. That was my substitute for ear-defenders. I would scream at the sound of the air brakes on buses. A lot of people thought I was spoiled. I was punished for stimming. I was told I looked stupid for flapping my hands, and that nobody would want to be my friend if I continued. I was lucky enough to have a small circle of friends. High school was a total nightmare. I was told I was a non-achiever. When I mentioned to the headteacher that I had been diagnosed with autism, her response was, "Well, I hope you're better than the last autistic pupil we had. He was horrible, we were glad to get rid of him" My parents were very supportive and really tried their best with me. They were determined to get me into a normal state school. I had to complete a rigorous IQ test just to be accepted at the time. I adored college and university and I graduated with a 2.1 BA Degree. I enjoy working with special needs children because I want to help them to achieve their very best. I want to teach them to love themselves for who they are and not to be ashamed. My dream is to make a more accepting world for people with autism and other disabilities.

My family didn’t know the signs. I didn’t speak until I was 3 and never played with toys like other kids. I had what my parents called terrible tantrums (which we know now were meltdowns). They just thought I’d be slower than other children and would need a lot of help. When I started school I excelled and found my special interests that helped me get through high school. I didn’t get diagnosed with high functioning autism until I was 17 and I’m very happy now that I can put a name to what my situation is. I’m going to university in the fall and I’m so excited to represent the ASD community in my next step in life. Side note: I find myself toe walking, rocking and spinning all the time and people think it’s very odd but I always just did it when I didn’t have any stimulation or informational input.

What's really painful is when parents are neglectful of their child's mental struggles - just thinking they are perfectly healthy... Decades later the adult seeks out their own help, a bit shocked with how neglectful the parents were... High functioning autism is especially that case many parents don't want to believe - nope, just shy -- nope, just push them harder.

It is such a blessing to watch this video. My goodness... You are so lucky that there is help support and love for the special children. I for one find this very very hard because I am a solo father of 4 children and 2 of them are autistic. Unfortunately, the mother of my children left our family for another man who can supply her with plenty of money. She left our family I think she is ashamed of the fact that 2 of our beautiful angels are autistic. I can only wish there was support or a special system for special children like my poor autistic boys. Is there a group of parents that I can reach out to for teachings and support in raising my autistic boys? watching this video brings tears to my eyes as a solo father caring for my children. I never thought I would ever speak in such a way of heartbreak.

Had late signs of developmental delays from birth to the first 3 years of life and the disability onset at 2, and diagnosed with it at 3, started to speak at 4 and had it throughout childhood, and outgrew it in adolescence. Did early head start school, under went psychological and other various testing which ended up to have it, had hard interaction, socialization, and communication with other peers, emotionally distracted, and disturbed, was bullied, teased, named called, and always felt alone in grades 5,6,7, &10, even though I was always the top girl student in all my classes and had some behavior conduct problems (good, bad, etc.), was in special ed from preschool to high school, did pt/ot/ speech/ therapy/other things and had conseuling. I learned things the hard way, but overcame many challenges and obstacles. It has made the different person I am today. Ability or disability, even with having ASD(and/or other disabilities or not), we’re all different, can succeed, and can learn in many ways. I went to all grade school levels (prek-12), got awards, achievements, and good rewards, also went to middle, high school, and college with determination, excellence, preservance, driven/strive, and honors. Got all three diplomas from middle-high school and college. I’m now a college graduate and work as a pre-K-2 teacher at a kid’s education learning center and also a bachelor of science in psychology major as well as being good with kids, animals, and others. I’m absolutely proud of myself and even other individuals who are disabled/non-disabled.

@dieselmic34413 жыл бұрын
@@sophiebudd4567 this is life you can be smart in one area and not in an other just like the way someone can use his right hand to write and cannot do it with the left vice versa. American school system is among the weakest because you teach your child there is something wrong with you and you need extra help how do you want the child to be confident? Unstead of teaching them how to use they own adequate method of learning skills. some children can learn more effectively by using visual as a refence others need to touch to remember and then you have those that need to write. you cannot be good at all these skills especially at a young age. I am not trying to insult anybody but i have been in 3 schools system European, british and American the worst of all was the U.S system. Graduating from a U.S university i saw many of my friends were using adderall left right and center and still struggle.... teachers are not accountable and lazy when it comes to teaching 8n the U.S they cannot even tell an 8 year old to stop talking using teaching mechanism to a boy they disengage so fast.... school should not be a torture when you find a wonderful teacher you want to remain in class and cannit wait to go home and tell your parents to take you to school early the next day... i had my physic teacher telling the all class that no body will have an A and that you should drop because he does not mind failing the all class.... this teacher was brilliant in physics however he could not teach people would sleep during lecture and would rather go home and read from the book my point is you can be Excellent at a topic but cannot give a successful presentation or teach the content to someone else......

We were given lots of resources and started speech therapy and occupational therapy. He is still definitely behind on speech, but he's gotten great with imitating noises and he's trying to say some small words like "good", "hi", and once even said "seriously", came out like "see-see" but that's what he meant. 😅 Lately he's exploded with a lot of things such as potty training, which I was beginning to get discouraged about. She says my name “Chris” almost perfectly but otherwise, she only mimics what she hears, and doesn’t really know what she is saying. Also, she doesn’t verbally communicate her wants and needs, she will just pull on your hand when she wants to do something. She also mostly never responds to her name being called and pays little to no attention when you try to show her something…. My son is autistic and it is horrible, I’m tiered of people saying it is normally and it’s another way of looking at things and you don’t need a cure. My son is the only child out of big family to have autism. I didn’t notice something was wrong and off about my son my friends did. He was my first born child and I was on my own completely. I keep looking up what could be going on with my son because they didn’t have anything to help me found out what was wrong we’re I lived. I moved to another state and got my son diagnosed at 6 years old. The reason it’s so bad because yes he doesn’t understand danger. I have had my son run in the road in front of moving cars laughing “luckily they saw him in time and he’s safe” climb over 3 story high balconies to get on the the other side. And if any of are thinking why wasn’t I watching him I FUCKING WAS and AM, he is tall for his age and strong so he gets out of my hold and runs to do things and also waits until I have my hands full and an or can’t get to him. We have to lock everything up to protect him and make sure he doesn’t destroy things. When he can’t get what he wants or all of sudden he screams an hurts himself. He will go off with strangers not understand what can happen to him. I have seen he’s cousins and other kids be mean to him, just hit him an he laughs have the time or says nothing. So if I hadn’t seen what happened to him I would have never known “let that sink in what could happen to him” No I’m sorry autism isn’t this great blessing this great thing to look at the world in a different way. There needs to be a cure because I know what my sons life could be an will be in the future and it scares the crap out of me.

I have a 2 year old brother who doesn’t respond to his name unless you make a high pitched noise, he loves to spin, rock and he only eats Sertian foods and he also hates loud noise (hoovers, paper shredder, hairdryer, fans) he also doesn’t communicate unless he says a number 🤷♀️ he really likes sensory things such as fidgets and he has a reparatory behaviour such as he will run across a room and close a door to then run back and open and shut it and repeat this until he forgets what he’s doing

Well, one of the main reasons for fear for a parent is not the diagnosis itself but the financial implication if it; in needing such longterm, expensive therapy and the great difficulty in attaining support from other sources.

Don’t give up. Treatment and services may may be opened to you upon receiving a formal diagnosis. Sometimes having a close loved one advocate for assessment opens doors to a diagnosis. My son is 4 and was just diagnosed with autism he’s been in speech therapy for over 2 years it has helped. Covid really made things so much harder for us we were isolated and he wasn’t getting any interaction with other kids so that really affected him and myself. Now I am in the process of putting him ABA therapy. I hope it’s a positive experience for him I’ve heard mixed opinions about it. I just want to make sure I’m doing the right thing for him it’s hard and overwhelming to have a child with special needs. I definitely feel a lot guilt for losing my patience or not getting him help sooner. A lot of times I feel like it’s my fault he has autism.

If me and his mother are talking he’ll tell me to shut my mouth or if we tell him to chill out he’ll just talk back. So basically our only option is to let him have a fit and hope he doesn’t end up destroying the house.

I know it's late for a comment. Hope you're son has made progress since. But, some children, mostly boy's are delayed in speech. Myself, who is well off now. Also having 3 brother's also delayed too. One brother is a dentist and the other is now attending UCLA. Another who didn't talk until he was 5! We all seen speech therapist until ages 5 to 7. My son, who just turn 2 1/2 just started saying words with a therapist help. Talk to you're family, it can run in you're genetics. Doesn't necessarily mean autism. My son is super stubborn, we have to make communicating a game out of everything. That short of play helps to.

Can someone out there tell me if they are familiar with language regression please? All I see is delays. My 3.5 years old was speaking and now he prefers to communicate without words. On September 2, he was diagnosed with Autism. The only thing I saw when he was younger is a crazy obsession with numbers and letters. He knew how to count from 1-100 in french and English and all his alphabet and colors and obsessed with books to the point where he would cry because he wanted me to read for him. I was surprised and worried that he will be bored in kindergarten and now I am worried that he won't be able to attend school. Now, he is obsessed with drawings and cars. He maintains eye contact, cuddle and no t scared of noise or change of routine. He can repeat anything I ask him to repeat and ask me what he wants. Something went off in his brain, he can't express himself or answer to any questions. However, he understands everything I ask him to do like before. He has now a made up language he talks to himself all day. So completely lost and heartbroken to see my little prince not being able to talk to me like before.

I have been to so many doctors with my son since he was 3 years old. He wouldn't speak a word until he was about four and he finally started talking and he started out with large words instead of the normal little words that you would expect from a toddler. Learning how to speak. I keep getting the runaround saying that he's just a kid and he'll be fine and he'll grow out of it. But now we are experiencing ARFiD also with him. It's like the pediatricians don't understand. When I tell them that autism runs in my family, my brother has it and they brush us off to rush to the next patient. I'm ready to pull my hair out. We've been dealing with this for 5 years now. He is literally taking 2 days to complete a test in school and his teacher is sending home tons of notes and I don't know how to respond because the doctors give me nothing. I think I'm just going to try to find a therapist for him to talk to and maybe something can go from there. Idk what to do anymore.

Just find some help in your area and whatever he does DON'T LET HIM WASTE HIS TIME AND BRAIN WITH DEVICES AND TV my little brother is 7 years old and all he does is watch tv PLEASE while you can dont let him get used to this screens and tv
@paulcodau38494 жыл бұрын
exactly what zezo118 said....and doctors should say this more....children up to 2 years of age should have zero screen(tv,tablet,phone...etc)time...lots of kids develop a recent form of autism that has conected with time they spend on devices

Your area should offer some sort of intervention. Here it’s called Early Intervention but I also think diagnosing at 16 months now would be extremely difficult and I’m not sure they would even try to right now.

Does he point? Any sensory issues? Autism is more than just speaking. Many kids are late talkers and have no autism. My kid speaks a little maybe 5 words but he has moderate-severe autism. He’s 24 months now

And also if I ask him few body parts he shows to me but only 3 to 4 body parts not all.. if I ask him to give thanks hifi he do it also says hi and byee.. still I've doubt whether he's autistic child or late talker

I was diagnosed 6 months ago. And I know VERY well I have social anxiety instead. She said I have social issues, short term memory loss, and repetitive behaviour like wearing only non-themed shirts. The social issues are actually me having a fear of begin judged and shamed or even very bad shyness all around. Someone with autism would want to communicate, they just don't know how to. The short term memory loss is just me having a bit of a hard tame paying attention. It looks very similar to short term memory loss. (ADD) The need to only where basic shirts is my fear of wearing normal shirts. They make me cringe A LOT. And, I know people won't judge me, but I just can't take it and just wear a basic shirt. Someone with autism would have an obsession with is. I do not.

Don't let it worry you, even if they know it, it won't make any difference, you are ok, you are there where you need to be, like I said already to another child, you a new generation who wont conform to this society's rules or ways, as we are been conditioned n programed to abey, so don't let it worry you n let it al flow, and maybe your mother knows something doctor don't know, you will some day know all this. As you may know there are others in different parts of this planet who are in the same position as you, for a reason, just stay as you are, is all good 🌈🌈🌈🌠🌠🌠🌅🌅🌅

Thank you for mentioning this fact, I've interacted with teachers who are not qualified to make mental health assessments and have mental health disorders of their own, whom project their disorder onto others. Pediatricians, Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists, Clinical Child Psychologists are more qualified in the subject of ASD.

I’m thinking of having a child and I’m 40 but genuinely concerned that my child might have autism because of my age. I’m thinking that I will just enjoy my life with my husband and not have kids. I don’t think I’d be able to go on living if my children had a disability like this. So much respect and power to the families supporting their kids ❤️I’m just being honest about my own limitations. I wouldn’t be able to handle it

Our neighbors had 2 kids in their early 40s. Both kids are some beautiful healthy teenagers today. I had my son with autism at 30 and some with ADHD at 24 and my daughter with no issues at 33. Speak to your OBGYN before making any decisions.
@diaryofarealmom3264 Жыл бұрын
Ridiculous. I had to go to special school when I was young for serious behavioral problems. I would have probably been deemed autistic today. I saw real autistic kids. Nowadays, it’s over-diagnosed, it use to be ADHD, which isn’t even diagnosed anymore, or as just an add on to autism. Some people are socially awkward, or weird, or have different interests. Some people are introverts. It’s so weird we have to always deem something wrong with people just for being different. It’s become a trend, like people trade stories of their mental issues with each other. A child that’s a picky eater?? No way! A child that gets obsessed and wants to watch the same movie 30000x?? How weird! I def don’t know all the words to Frozen. 😑 Let kids be kids. I’ve seen parents with true autistic kids, and they find it offensive when someone claims to be autistic when they aren’t, while they have to be their child’s complete caregiver the rest of their lives.

I keep researching autism, but it all still makes 0 sense, so being an introvert is autistic?? I prefer to be alone and I don't like eye contact, I have misophonia..does this mean I'm autistic????? Not liking something that you don't like means autism??? Well then I have severe autism, can I be helped or should I just kill myself ?
