As a software developer who really wants AI to help with programming I can tell you we are still quite a few years away from AI being able to actually program any meaningfully large programs. Like it can definitely help with smaller scripts or stuff like ai scripting where it can mostly just pulls it from the web and change key words. However, most companies either program at such a large scale there is just to much data for an AI to parce and effectively code beyond the most basic code that probably won't work because code is so varied and dynamic in companies. And for web most companies are going to use development tools that are designed to help things stay uniform and consistent, again something AI can do but you really begin pushing into companies having to train and dedicate their own servers and most aren't going to spend that kind of money because it's not effective enough and you just have to pay as much money on employees anyways to maintain the AI and operate it as if you didn't have it.

I quite agree but the thing about AI is it works and it works and it works while we are sleeping it's learning and while we're sleeping it might as well be watching KZbin videos or reading all the books in the library of Alexandria because we have given so much stuff on the internet and it probably knows what's worth researching and what doesn't but it's still probably going to research every single darn thing, because there's not a downtime no having to reason through things it's just adding the syntax into a dictionary.

As someone familiar with Linux, but not a desktop Linux master, CoPilot has been very helpful with diagnosing issues and searching for ways to make it do things I want, how I want. Seems there's so much Linux content out there, that it can actually find correct ways of doing things etc. It's so damn handy. Got three rigs running Linux now with no real issues. Just swapped my gaming rig over too. I would like to use Claude for some programming and electronics stuff too, but not yet looked into it.

@@sky0kast0the llms can already do that though 🤨 But yeah I agree with og comment that it’s not useful in big scale software development yet, you need to modify it to be in a uniform code style with the rest of the code base and it still makes mistakes

30:02 note from someone from Costa Rica, the Volcano he is talking about is Volcan Arenal (you can google it) it has 3 craters, one of them is now a lake (half a mile away from the main crater) the name is Laguna Botos, it is too acid so it is not recommended to swim in it, and the main crater is actually active (the national park has been closed a few times during the year for precautions) There is no legal way to go to the Laguna Botos, but people still go there.

As I'm sitting here watching this I'm working on a Blender plugin (currently has 24 scripts in it) I've been working on for the last couple weeks using Claude... I am NOT a coder. I'm doing this entirely through prompts, but as a side effect of using AI to make blender plugins and mods for me over the last year I've started to understand coding logic much better, and I can now prompt wit a sort of confidence I will be able to achieve my intentions. I've also been building a game in godot using AI to code it, Also I've made some Unity plugins.

The Post-Code world is a scenario I don't see to be probable in the near future...Sure, Claude and ChatGPT can do many things that novel coders will find impressive, but once you dig down to niche cases, the facade falls apart a bit. Highly specific knowledge will not be available to these models and if you try to give context via dev documentation, oftentimes once the problem requires actual logic and reasoning instead of just coding knowledge to complete, they are of little use. Don't want to downplay how incredibly valuable AI is for people that just need basic things and aren't experienced in coding, but especially lower level coding (e.g. audio engines in mobile development) are too complicated for AI to grasp. Maybe ChatGPT 5.0 will completely prove me wrong, but I have had some bad experiences with AI being useful for more elaborate projects. This is also due to context window limitations.

You're right AI is inevitable, and AI as we imagined it from movies and other media, is super underwhelming compared to what we imagined in our heads, just like Y2K, 2012, ghosts, cryptids. The hypetrain is currently filled with techbros writing article headlines to make AI seem more impressive than what it really is: A terrible search engine, a mid coder and a decent at best writer and conversationalist. Our AI's peaked a looong time ago, and they will keep enshittifying from here on out
