Nope me, too. I love how "wintry" and moody those can seem and often the grey hues in e.g. my markers are those that first die out on me ^^'

I recently got a small palette of Derwent Graphitint watercolours in a Scrawlrbox. They are a paint that is mixed with graphite (also in a Scrawlrbox last year we got some tubes of 'liquid pencil' by Derivan which is the same kind of thing). Due to the addition of the graphite the colours are lovely muted shades. I really do need to have a proper play around with them as they look fantastic. One thing that I found both a positive and a negative about the addition of the graphite is that the medium isn't fixed once dry like inks etc. This actually makes the paints erasable (to a certain extent lol) which is kind of cool and I think you could get some really interesting effects. However, this does mean that like graphite pencils/charcoal/chalks/pastels, this paint also smudges and gets really messy and you have to be careful not to rub your hand across it as not only will it smudge but the oils in your skin can get onto the page and cause the graphite to become patchy etc. These are paints that you will definitely need to use a workable fixative spray and probably a wrist guard/rest thing so that you don't touch the page with your hands.

You need to load the brush in classical sumi-e style: in three different containers, add water and then dilute a little of the ink on the first, then 50% more on the second and then a lot on the third plate. Then dip all of the tip of the brush in the very light container, then dip until half of the tip on the secon and then dip just a little bit of the tip on the second container. That way your brush will be loaded with three shades of the ink. Then you start drawing.

@@lemmetalkaboutthis sumi-e is a traditional Chinese painting style. What this accomplishes is that it creates a smooth gradient on your brush, from dark to light so it conveys light flow. Google sumi-e and you'll understand better

The effect of colors getting granulated and seperated is so popular in my country right now. It's called 'seperate layer colors'. We love it because it's create the 'sumi' effects that appears in chinese and japanese art. Guess it's a thing here in the eastern asian.

Also Eastern type brushes work really well with them too. Held upright, which is a different style of applying paint/ink. I Love these subtle dark tones. You artwork looks great. I do some Japanese calligraphy so I'm used to working with sumi ink. Watercolours are made of finer particles which means their colour trends to distribute very well. Sumi, on the other hand, is made of unevenly ground particles of varying sizes and is designed to be used rather undiluted. When the two are mixed with little water, the sumi pigment is more visible. Sumi loses its opacity faster than most watercolours when more water is added as the particles are generally not as pigmented, so as you add more water to a mixture of the two, the sumi fades from solid black to light grey while the watercolour somewhat maintains its original colour. The dark splotches you see are a consequence of some of the heavier sumi particles not mixing properly, and is unavoidable if the sumi is mixed into the watercolour pan. If you want, you could get a similar effect without the staining by grinding your sumi fresh and mixing it with watercolour only as you use it.

I'm doing the official prompt list this year, like I did last year, but neither year's list have inspired me enough on their own. So I've added a secondary level, like you did last year. Last year, for me, I decided to make every prompt something related to a princess. Not every one had a that's, any every one had a dress even. Heck, one didn't even have an actual princess, lol. It was a shop with a sign that said "Princess Apothecaries." Regardless, every entry had to do something with a princess. This year I went in a completely different direction and it worked so incredible well! I was even less inspired this year, so I decided to write an English Haiku for every prompt. I specify "English" because Japanese Haikus are traditionally related to nature, whereas English Haikus focus majoridly on the syllable count. Anyway, after writing the Haikus, I felt A LOT more inspired. I was able to create a thumbnail for each prompt already, and because I inspired myself through poetry, I could use the general feeling of the poems, and what they meant to me, instead of being more direct with a singular word that may or may not have inspired me anywhere near as much. I hope that helps with ideas on what to add to your Inktober experience 💜💜
