man.. Cycling my first aquarium for a few weeks now, pretty much done with the cycle. But now after I have first noticed bladder snails, which werent that bad but they reproduce crazy fast.. Then nasty white worms (detritus worms), then "moss animals" and now the worst of all.. which im not even sure if this is it because ive been searching for hours and found your video... Chironomidae.. Filthy larvae.. I noticed them this evening when inspecting my tank, but im not even sure if its that. They do look like Chironomidae that you showed but they actually make a sort of tube/cocoon that they seem to live in. They venture out a little bit to eat algae it seems. Ive been taking out dying plant material more and ordered a good gravel vac because the simple hose im using aint enough clearly. But this aint a great start to the hobby.. The larvae are to much for me it creeps me out..

@BobMossNanoTanks
@BobMossNanoTanks 2 жыл бұрын
That's a good question, I have never seen them for purchase myself. Generally, the eggs / larvae are just in your tap water, if you give them enough of a food source they will reproduce. Most people's fish clear them out so they never see them, but in shrimp tanks there are no predators so you see a lot more of them.
@markvickery5894
@markvickery5894 11 ай бұрын
Eggs/larvae do not exist in your tap water, best way to find them is by going out to slow moving streams, ponds, and vernal pools, collecting some water and dirt from there in a jar, and then letting it sit for about 2 weeks. This gives you time to observe it and make sure there aren’t any bad things like pond snails, hydra, mosquito larvae, leeches, or anything else that might be detrimental to the health of your aquarium. Then I personally like to take a pipette to suck out the things I want and add them to my aquarium, in an attempt to keep the population in the jar going so I always have a confined started population that allows me to easily catch them to add to any new tanks
@JustJoshing4L
@JustJoshing4L Ай бұрын
@markvickery5894 Not always, but they definitely can be. Lotta sources online that confirm it. Maybe not those specifically, but ringwirm,flatworms,mosquito larvae have been found in tap water before.

Is there a way to introduce microfauna into a tank? All the plants I have were sold to be pest free so I doubt they will have any kind of hitch hikers. I was considering grabbing some plants or a rock out of a local pond or stream, but I don't know if that would be too high risk for parasites. Any suggestions?

Most of them don’t live in your tap water, idk where he got that from, however what you can do is go get a jar of pond water, then let it sit for a couple months, this way you make sure you don’t have any of the bad critters like hydra or pond snails is water beetles. And then what I like to do is take a pipette to harvest cyclops, copepods, daphnia, and whatever else that I actually want in my tank and add them to my tank

If you’re talking about microscopic organisms you can’t see, they will naturally exist in tap water as well as on plants you add to your tank. The ones shown in this video however must be bought online, transferred from an existing tank whether your own or another aquarists, or collected yourself from the wild

Different strokes for different folks. I loved the first video, but the sound effects on this one really put me off. I see at least one person liked it though, so... can't please everyone. Good to mention backswimmer if you're going to mention water boatman. They look very similar , but water boatman is harmless whereas a backswimmer is a major predator for stuff like Daphnia, as I recently discovered.

Good video, but don’t appreciate you misinforming people that most of these exist in tap water. This is untrue, especially with how water is treated. The only thing that still exists in tap water would be too small to observe with the naked eye and need a microscope. Please stop misinforming people

@markvickery5894

@@BobMossNanoTanksbesides rotifers, phytoplankton, slime mold, and possibly bryozoans, Altho not sure about that last one, this is untrue. None of these creatures whether adult, larval, or eggs, exist in tap water, especially if you’re on city water. Maybe if you have well water there could be some. Set up a sterile brand new tank, that either hasn’t ever been set up before or has been sterilized with ethanol, and just add tap water and food, and I guarantee you won’t see any of the other creatures mentioned in this video, except maybe some larvae from flying insects if you don’t have a lid. This also has to be set up inside, away from other tanks, and avoid cross contamination
