Hi. In this video we look at what are trim tabs in an airplane. We see where trim tabs are installed and see the different types of trim tabs. We look at each of these trim tabs, how they function and the advantage of having trim tabs installed on an aircraft.

Even commercial airliners use balance tabs to help deflect control surfaces, like the MD-80 and 737. In fact, the MD-80’s ailerons aren’t even linked to the yoke. Only their balance tabs.

I don't understand why elevator goes up when we trim nose up. Does it means when we move the elevator trim wheel, it moves elevator at the same time?

It moves the trim tab. The trim tab is deflected downward which will cause the elevator to be deflected up.

Trim tabs set the trimmed airspeed more than they control the plane’s attitude. Changing the power setting will then change the plane’s attitude as it will want to maintain the same trimmed airspeed. Also, you should not fly the airplane with the trim wheel. You should use the elevator to change the plane’s attitude and/or airspeed and then use the trim to relieve the force on the controls.
