What are waterspouts and how do they form?

We have plenty of waterspouts here in The Great Lakes region, usually the “fair weather” type, with the most active season being late Summer through the Fall as the air cools down while the water temps are still warm…though we do occasionally get the tornadic type now and then… I live on Lake Erie, just west of Cleveland, and last October 7th (2023) there was an outbreak of spouts, where over 170 waterspouts were seen and registered in an 8 hour period. I personally saw 65 waterspouts that day before I finally just stopped counting. It’s quite an amazing site to see even just one spout, even more so to be able to see them in an outbreak, where you might see 5, 10, even 15 of them on the water at the same time!
