What Are Your Front Blind Spot Zones Hiding From You? How To Deal With Windshield A-Pillar Hazards!
When we read or hear about blind spots around our vehicles, most of the time they're referring to the ones that exist from your side mirrors and on back. But all vehicles also have front or forward blind spots that are caused by the windshield support structures, which are commonly known as ""A-Pillars". Over the years, these pillars have gotten larger and wider to make them stronger and improve their ability to protect the occupants of the vehicle in a rollover accident. But a side effect of their increased size is that they create bigger obstructions to a driver's vision, producing blind spot areas that can hide full-size vehicles, not to mention pedestrians, bicycles, and motorcycles. But there are ways to nullify these blind spots and that's what this video is all about...solutions to this potentially dangerous safety hazard.

Thank you for the tips. Today when I was coming home from work I almost hit a car while turning left. It seemed as if the car came out of "nowhere". However, I now know that I did two things wrong. First, I was not aware of the A-pillar blind spot, and that can completely block your view of cars travelling right in front of you. The second mistake I made was that when I turned left, I did not turn into the left lane (which was closet to me). I crossed over into the right. Luckily the driver was able to swerve out of my way. But it shook me up because I did not see that car at all.

That’s a scary situation to go through, isn’t it! But I’m glad you didn’t have an accident, and also glad that you’re more aware of how to avoid an accident because of a blind spot in the future. For those A-pillar blind spots, the thing that helps me most is scanning the area around the intersection ahead as I approach it, and seeing in advance any vehicles that might be approaching. And you also realized what to do differently on the left turn situation, so just chalk this up as a good learning experience! Take care!

Same. I had a car before but I didn’t experienced this kind of blindspot. I even always slow and move my head left and right before proceeding in every pedestrian. Suddenly once pedestrian came from nowhere. Its kinda frustrating with these kind of cars build.

I agree…it is amazing how quickly a pedestrian or other vehicle can seemingly come out of nowhere from a blind spot. It’s good that you always slow down and look both ways before proceeding. I have gotten much better at scanning the road and intersection up ahead so I know what to expect when I get there.

Great video. I'm getting used to a new SVU after driving the same older one for 14years and had a close call within a week of getting the car because of the wider a-pillars I wasn't used to. Trying to be very conscious of this issue now and ALWAYS doing the "look and lean"!

A pillar blind spot at a roundabout caused me to hit a cyclist. Came out of nowhere !! Luckily I was stopped at the intersection anyway and he was ok but Jesus. Shook me up

My 2018 Jeep Compass has electronic warning for side blind spot, and safety discussion in the user manual re back-up camera, blind spot etc; no mention anywhere by anyone (sales rep, service dept, user manual, sticker in the car) of A-pillar blind spot. I've never heard of it, and in 40 years driving have never run afoul of one. Just learned about it the hard way. Definitely demands a camera.

Not something I'd heard talked much about either, but I know it can be a problem. I did see a design idea (actually a science fair project from a 14-year-old girl) of cameras in the A-Pillars that virtually allowed you to see through them. That's something that we might see implemented someday.

I have quite number of occasions nearly hitting a car when I entered the round-about (Australia road). I am looking for a blind spot camera, hope it has a little screen I can place behind the A pillar.
