After having failed a lot of interviews, I went to the last interview I had having stopped caring completely. So I changed to sweatpants and T-shirt as work-out was next, went in to the interview not giving a damn anymore. Just casually answered everything with brutal and direct honesty. Even when it wasn't in my interest. Would by most people be considered self-sabotage but I had utterly stopped caring and given up at that point. Talking informally and joking around a lot. That's the job I finally got offered and took. Sometimes the world just doesn't make sense.

I've always only ever interviewed that way. Not caring one way or another, just being honest, joking, etc. I never had issues landing a job. Trying to sound super serious and super professional is fake and everyone is going to see through that anyway. That's not to mean, that one can be a total idiot on the interview, but people just get too worked up about interviews, when it's nothing to be worried about.

I have a job, but I still watched it for the future and some of the tips in here are actually helpful and helped me in the past to get my current job, since I read some of them before. Also I changed my attitude. In general I am really honest and natural person. People think sometimes that I am depressed or sad, but I am just always on the ground. I hate to lie or act. But I still wasn't getting any job offers. This time I decided to "uplift" myself and be a bit more cheerful, to smile more, to drop a joke or two in the interview, to act a bit more confident. They instantly gave me the job. It kinda makes me think that the world will never let you be yourself, so you have to put on a mask to achieve something.

Great answer. I used to teach interviewing and I always realized that this question must be addressed and not lowballed either. I appreciate the justification of the number. I always thought it was interesting that the least accurate way of assessing potential employees is the interview. The least reliable predictor of employee performance, specifically. And most employers know this. But they feel they can beat the stats. OK, give them what they want to see then. This is kind of a gift because you can figure out what they want to see, what they expect to see. Think of yourself as an actor acting in a film. You can practice your role so it's smooth and comfortable. And they will respond as you expect. You can practice too apply for jobs when you already have a job. What's the worst that can happen, you already have a job. It's great practice and you might end up with a better job.

The problem with this answer is that it is mostly targeted towards people who aren't sure of their worth. If you work in a field like tech you don't want to give an open-ended answer like this because it makes it seem like there is room for negotiation to go lower, and believe me they WILL go lower if possible. This is one good reason to use recruiters to discuss salary so that you never have to even speak with the hiring manager about it directly.

When I was hired , I asked for the *lower* value of my salary . I told him that I wanted to prove my worth before being given a set amount. Fortunately, I have a genuine and honest boss , who after reviewing my performance , has raised my wages , again and again , to where I am on a level slightly above my colleagues who have similar experience. I would NOT recommend doing this if you don’t know who you are working for , I just got lucky finding an honest man.

@@wixoss9893 Yes, yes you can. If your employee can wash 2 cars well per hour, and you charge $15 per car wash, your employee cannot exceed $30/hour. In actuality, their wage cannot exceed the amount you make after taxes, support staff, advertising (like the sign that got the cars there or fliers), the property rent, the consumable materials costs such as soap and water and rags. Doing so means you are at a loss, and therefore will go bankrupt and your employee now has no job.

As a person that actually performs interviews, I really appreciate people that just go straight ahead with the amount they really expect. No beating around the bush with what research they have done (lol, I know the realities and market standard, I am doing those interviews). Best advise - think before the interview - and tell them that you are willing to take the job offer for X amount. Simple as that.

The bad thing about that is that the prospective employee is bidding against themselves. The prospective employer knows that whatever pay someone says, they'll almost certainly take some amount less that what they said. Likewise, if the prospective employee says the highest, or higher, range then the prospective employer knows they're not talking with someone who's realistic. It's a question designed to exploit and psychologically manipulate someone by people who are looking to exploit others rather than treat them like people. Just because decent folk also ask the question doesn't mean the question is not designed to be more beneficial to those who exploit relationships rather than have mutually beneficial relationships. In fact, more decent folk asking the question makes it easier for less decent folks to go unnoticed. When asked that question I explicitly state that I don't like the question because it's framed to make me bid against myself and I then ask the interviewer what they were willing to pay me. Typically, the interviewer either terminates the conversation or expresses understanding of my perspective and states that they just want to make sure I don't start at a rate I find unacceptable. While not foolproof, it does at least ensure the relationship starts on an honesty footing and it helps me to ensure that I work for people who at least have the ability to understand, possibly even empathize with, someone else. I could still end up working for an exploitative person rather than someone who wants to ensure they have *mutually* beneficial relationships, but at least helps. Of course, how this question was answered in this video is really good, and I may use it from time to time. My primary objective, though, is less making maximum dollars and more ensuring I don't work for people who are exploitative (or too exploitative, at the least).

Little part time job: I asked for what I had been making at a much more complex job I'd quit (where I was not being paid what I was worth). My boss offered me slightly less until I was comfortable in my new job with different responsibilities. I stayed at that wage for a year, not because my boss didn't want to give me a raise, but because I discovered the job came with amazing benefits (not insurance, but super flexible work schedule, products to take home as frequent bonuses, good crew and reasonably kept equipment.) After a year I asked for a raise and got a raise much higher than I expected, because my boss was thrilled with his new hire.

This is great advice! Nice video. Unfortunately, I hadn't seen this video prior to my recent interview. The new position was at a factory going through a startup and would increase my commute from 20 minutes to 55 minutes, so I went in figuring it would be an offer below what I was making previously, and I would politely decline and treat it as practice run for the next one. Salary didn't get mentioned during the physical interview (or the 2 previous phone interviews), but the morning following the physical interview the head of HR called me and asked what my salary requirements were. Since they contacted me via a recruiter to kick off the whole process, I figured I would go all in. I told her what I currently made and that it would have to be significantly higher than that. She said thank you and that they would be contacting me with an offer later in the day. 2 hours later I had accepted a job with an almost 20% higher pay, signing bonus, and quarterly bonuses. Sometimes you just get lucky.

I have some questions: 1. I’ve been rejected from about 50 interviews. (In the last one they found the excuse that I could have given more examples. There must have been 20 to 30 perfectly given interviews with no feedback at all. The feedback I got from a lot of them is that they went for another candidate). 2. Before the pandemic it only took around 4 interviews to secure a new role 3. I went to a top business school and have half a decade of experience working for blue chip companies 4. *I’ve been given the advice by some corporate operatives that I could still somehow secure a role at a top company even if I’ve been unemployed for half a dozen years* *Is it discrimination? Is it bias because there is money involved? I would just like to know what is going on as I’m being forced to retire early abroad/take a career break in the summer*.

My best tip that has worked well for me is to use the phrase “to make it viable to leave my current position I need x” that way they know there is little room for negotiation on my part. This was a great response. Interviewee shows confidence, uses research and third party information drops the higher number and shares his case for it, but shows understanding of the employer's position and essentially offers them a deal. I wonder if it might even be appropriate to mention you'd like to prove yourself and work toward the higher end of the range, or maybe that could wait until hired and in a meeting with a manager or a review.

I mentioned to my current employer that I would be moving in a couple years time & would like to pursue a higher role at a different agency once I moved (We are a regional branch). She went over my resume with me and helped me re-write it so it was more tailored to the job I want rather than tailored to the job I currently have. We then did some mock interviewing for the new role to see how "ready" I was for it. Now I'm getting a promotion at my current place of employment due to the readiness I demonstrated to my boss and I am looking to transfer in two years rather than step up X-D. (I also work not-for-profit sector so the flow of things can be a bit different.)

Good luck on your interview. I suggest this as a BETTER answer if you get this question: "What is my salary expectation....? Well, I'm quite happy to *consider* any offer that is competitive in the market these days. (Optional: 'I have seen similar positions go up to the XYZ dollar level.') What salary range has been allotted for this role?"

I interviewed a contract that I felt was a bit above my experience level, but the contract rate was more than double my salary at the time, so I took a punt thinking I had nothing to loose and ended up getting it... 1 year later (just a couple weeks ago) a similar situation came up another contract which is the level above what I had just been doing, again I took a punt thinking it was out of my league and again got it... I am just shy of triple the salary I was on a year ago, and more than 4 times the salary I was on 4 years ago. Also I have no degree, never went to university, or college and don't have an apprenticeship. I joined the Army basically straight from school. Being confident in interviews goes a long way.

I am 58 years old. I have been on both sides of this conversation about salary expectations as a job seeker and as a manager interviewing and hiring I have found this is actually the best response to this question: (Say this with a smile) I completely understand this question from your position because you don’t want to waste your time pursuing someone who has unreasonable salary expectations; however I have found that this tends to be a double edged sword. I can ask for far more than you’re willing to pay and my possible employment ends here. I can also ask for far less than you were willing to offer and maybe get the job at less than what I could receive. I’ve done some research about this position and what the average salary ranges are and I am comfortable with those figures. Im sure you already have a salary range established for this position and if you believe like I do that I’m the right fit for this position, then please feel comfortable making me an offer and I am sure we can come to a mutually agreed upon amount Good luck!

I think this is a good answer for a more traditional role like maybe sales or finance. Which I find kind of ironic tbh since those roles are generally more about charisma but places such high value on form over function in interactions. But honestly I think this answer is worrisome if you know your value, because it leaves room for negotiation. I've found much more success in being firm with my salary requirements. It is also a speech that is very clearly rehearsed too and I find that the less you sound like you rehearsed for an interview the more success you'll have in the interview. It goes against everything we are taught about them but that is the new and improved modern interview model, they want proof you can think on your toes and that you are honest. A stutter and an 'Ummm' is more than forgivable if you're also coming up with good answers on the spot, which is more impressive than copy and pasting an answer into a script that you read 20-30 times before the interview.

Great tips in this video. My greatest tips for negotiating the salary on the yearly basis is a little similar but in reverse. I personally don’t compare salary with my colleagues, not that interested in what other people earn but I don’t want to be fooled by my boss and the company I work for. Therefore the I’ve found a quite successful way with the bosses I’ve had while working as a consultant. I’ve told them I want the salary I’m worth, they know what salary I have, how much I work and what the customer is paying the for my knowledge in comparison to my colleagues and other companies. Every time I’ve had a new boss I’ve told them this expectation I have on them and been successful with my salary without feeling greedy.

I’ve done something similar but I’ve added “I expect to get this salary, however I am ready to work for a bit lower amount for a few months to prove my myself. If you’re happy with me, and think that I am worth the salary I expect, then I’ll be happy for a raise. If not, I’d be happy to receive a feedback so that i would be able to get better and reach your expectations.” They were really happy with the answer and hired me, 3 months later the gave me a raise. But it also depends on the job, in the industries I work for, they like more humble people than overconfident ones. (Software Engineer)

Please remember that only highly governed industries stick strictly to salary bands. Most companies only use the band as guidance but will pay much more if you are of value. In my line of work, you don’t request a salary. They make you an offer, and you accept, decline, or counter. Your experience and/or reputation, as well as the price of oil, will determine how the conversation proceeds from there. And it does not matter what you promise to deliver. If you do not perform to the level of their expectations, you will be run off or wish you were.

First thing to do is understand why they're asking the question. The employer wants to really know whether your expectations are far above what they're willing to pay. The simplest answer, and the one I've used several times before, is that "I need to learn more about the role, during the course of this interviewing process, to be able to give a meaningful answer". That satisfies interviewers most times. And, on the rare occasions that they press I just ask if the role has a salary range. They are always able to provide that.

I would add that sometimes it may be to your advantage by not revealing a salary expectation. Instead you can answer their question by stating that, "I have researched the typical salary range for this kind of position and it's a range I am happy with. In addition I have thoroughly research your business and have concluded that it's certainly a company I would enjoy working for. Following my research I trust and I'm confident that the company will offer me a salary which I will be comfortable with, that values me as an employee and likewise the company will feel they are getting great value from me". By doing this, you don't lay your cards on the table, as your potential new employer may pay above average salaries for the position. You'll also find out if they do the opposite. The company who wishes to employ you should be made to seriously consider what you are worth and offer a salary that respects you as an employee and of course respects their own values and business.

Great video! I'm no expert on the subject, but I'd be willing to guess the HR team in this particular scenario is comfortable with this type of formal interview, where you can prove your worth via the pre-interview research and humility. In my experience I've seen great success by being more to the point and offering THEM a salary range between X and X+5000 when asked, with X being the minimum for which I'd be willing to take the job. Just after this, I'd ask the question of variable salaries based on performance, letting them know I'm interested in working hard to exceed their expectations.

Not to toot my own horn, but I interview fairly well. When asked this question I always flip the script, by answering with a question of my own. "What have you budgeted for this position?" 99% of the time, I am given a salary range, and I always pick the higher end. It also gives you an opportunity to learn if you are underselling or overselling yourself, before giving a direct answer. Earlier in my career, I would have done what was demonstrated in the video, and pick something closer to the middle range, but like I said, I interview very well, and I've usually proven my worth by the time we get to this question, so I always pick the top of the range with no hesitation.

I think this is excellent advice and a great way to put it. I've always been a big advocate for myself but there are times when transparency and communication fail due to bad management or when a boss is especially stingy. I worked at a job where I gave the rate that I was looking for in the interview, which, was still under my worth as an employee, I was working for a small firm and they just didn't have the means to pay that at the time so I agreed to a lower rate with the understanding it would be raised in 6 months, which I did get a slight raise ($1/hr) but it was still under what I asked for. I got to a year and I had excellent performance, I was called a "star performer" and I got a $3K bonus and another $1 raise. this was great but still under the original asking rate. I get to the 2 year mark, which happened to be right as COVID lockdowns kicked off so my boss delayed my review (ha, convenient) so after 6 months when my next review came around I asked for a $3 raise this time, since I hadn't got a raise in a year yet the firm was making enough money to hire two new people. I got my $3 raise and I ended up leaving 6 months later but I only finally got to my asking rate after 2 years of working well under what my worth was. I learned a lot and I'm glad I worked there. I'm also glad I set the expectation early, I just wish management honored that, too.

As is often said there are two sides to every story, in this case your side, the employee, and the management side. I can see you have not been on the management side or understand that perspective. The story you construct and the reasons you believe and assume are not accurate. Educate yourself on what you employer needs and wants or you will forever be simply asking them to give you what you think you should be paid, and being disappointed when they don’t, or in this case dissatisfied when they do.

My answer to this question is always the same. Whatever is fair and reasonable for my level of experience and savvy. I then remind whoever is asking the question that there are lots of tools online to help determine what my overall level of compensation should be. At that point, whoever is asking these questions is put to a decision as to whether they're truly interested in myself or not. The vast majority of employers are not interested in the best talent, they're interested in what they can afford.

Hi Richard, thank you for this video, it certainly makes sense after hearing you explain how to answer this question. I have also seen this question in the initial application on-line. There is a question in the application that asks what your salary expectation is. So you would do the same thing then, find out what the salary range is and type in a number towards the higher end? I"m going to watch your mock interview next!

I've been applying for jobs and the kicker in this question is that it's extra common on the application itself. I absolutely hate that. When allowed, I'll write "negotiable". But too often, it requires a number. If a range is publicly posted I'll usually write a number in the middle.

In my line of work, with 20 years experience. What I will accept and what I expect are two very different numbers. I expect 200k a year, I’ll accept 150k a year. Anything less, I shake a hand and wish them a nice day. My skill and time aren’t worth petty companies.

I like this approach better for those with solid experience; make them make an offer (one can mention they know the field and current rates) and tell them you’ll either accept it or reject it with no hard feelings. I think this video is suited for junior people who don’t have experience and options.

No hate, just my opinion: When I'm asked that question I just stress to the interviewer that I am living on my own and I need to be able to asses all my needs and have emergency money ready to go incase I have to stop working to attend personal needs. I don't give any details but stress the fact that I live alone and there are no plans to change my living situation. This way I get a livable wage with the confidence that the company knows I'm going to be loyal as they are the reason I'm paying for my right to live where I want.

To be fair, they don't care and they do not need to know that. The role of a recruiter is to assess if you meet the requirements of the job and not whether the job meets your requirements.

In the past I've addressed that question by making it clear I know what the average pay in the area is, reminding them of my current employer (that I'm not entirely sure I want to part ways with. That part is important) who is already paying that, and making it clear that even if they don't beat my current employer by much (such as they add a perk in I can't get where I'm at now) I'm looking to get my foot in the door and can work my way up from there. I've never not gotten an offer using this process.

"What are your salary expectations?" "In preparing for this interview today I did look into the average salary range for this position within the industry, and the range is within the salary range you placed in the job listing. You are aware of my qualifications based on my CV/resume And this interview, and I am absolutely confident that you will compensate me accordingly and fairly." In negotiations, usually the first person to mention a number, loses.
@CareerVidz
@CareerVidz 3 жыл бұрын
This depends on what you define as "loses". If you start higher than what you actually want, you can come down (or "lose") and still get the salary you want. The important thing in my opinion is to know your worth and have a figure in mind you won't go below 👍

Having a "number you wont go below" is NOT the important thing at all for a candidate. Getting the company to put their highest acceptable number on the table is the important thing for candidates.
@kevinm.8682
@kevinm.8682 3 жыл бұрын
@@CareerVidz By "loses" I'm referring to The ability to adjust to the issue at hand, namely compensation. Let's say the salary range was between 35k-45K. If a strong candidate states that they would accept 37.5 k and "trusts that the boss will see their value and adjust their salary accordingly", They may have left money on the table. Perhaps the hiring manager, after reviewing the credentials and talking with the candidate has in the back of their mind "This is a top candidate. I can justify something in the 42.5k range." If they know they can land the candidate for 37.5k, They might make their offer accordingly: "We'd love to bring you aboard, we think you'll be a fine addition to the organization. In fact we're so impressed, instead of offering you the 37.5 k, we're going to go all the way up to 39k to show our commitment to you. I had to get special approval for this, but that's only good if you accept our offer to today. What say you?" By making the company state a number first, the candidate ends up making considerably more. All of this assumes the candidate is strong. If the candidate isn't so strong, and they insist that they would " Make do" at the top of the range, the hiring manager might think "I was willing to take a chance on this candidate at the lower end of the spectrum. I believe they have potential and if they don't work out our compensation budget won't take too much of a hit. But clearly this candidate thinks more highly of their demonstrated skills. Either that or they'll decline our offer and we'll miss out on one of the other candidates. I think I'll take a pass on this one." I definitely agree with you that a candidate should know their worth, and hopefully in today's market they can hold out until someone pays them that amount. The days of people groveling for a low paid position are over, and I hope they don't come back.

Would love a video on handling recruiters during the initial phone screening or prior. Has anyone else noticed a HUGE uptick in recruiters stating the pay range for the job upfront and Lowballing immediately? With a complete inability to negotiate at all? This has happened to me 3 times this month. Recruiter will speak via the phone and if I give a salary range they agree to it and I continue to interview only to be told after 3-4 interviews the job is thousands less than what was initially discussed? Is this a new tactic? How do we avoid these scenarios?
