I wonder if they used anything to retard mold? Or if the armor started to smell as it (inevitably) decayed? Would it be less apt to chafe than metal armor, but more likely to cause infection? I'm guessing they had solutions to decay and microbes: alcohol perhaps? Heating with rocks from a fire? Could they be used for some kind of pillow? More questions!

I think later on, armor did get standardized. But early on, that wasn't the case.

@EireHammer

@@dvsxavier but not standardized, those were all handmade pieces that may have been similar but nothing beats machinery in pumping out single parts. Also swords in large numbers...are you sure? And sure you can have a mass of arrow heads but making the shafts and providing the fletching are also needed. The logistics of ancient armies is mind boggling and the idea there was a standard as we think of them is abstract.
@Arcidi225
@Arcidi225 4 ай бұрын
@@EireHammer standard doesn't have to be strict and precise. It can be something like: Sword should weight X +- 5% And be length of 2 feet. Another thing is, even when you are doing handmade work, it's easier to do 50 swords without any variations, as the process of it is repetitive. Of course, each sword will be a little bit different. But without precise measurement tools, we wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Let's be honest the "lorica segmentata" is extremely overrated. Is was NOT a good armour. But it was fast to be produced since all you had to do was produce sheets of metal.. But was not cost-effective and was hard to maintain. Ence why it was phased put in a century.. Chainmail is way cheaper and easier to mantain..squamata is a bit more difficult to be made but is way more protective Also the Late Empire uniforms are *chef kiss*.. go look at the uniform of the late empire and early medieval Roman period and than go back to the sad lorica hamata.. Which one is poggers?

He said early Roman armor was not standardized which is absolutely true. It wasn’t until Rome was no longer a republic did the military standardize. Prior to that citizens were responsible for their own weapons and armor. Therefore the richer folks had better equipment. Watch more than ten seconds and maybe you might learn something for once 😂😂😂
