As a mixing/mastering engineer, my primary goal is to enhance and fulfill the artists vision of their work. If they told me the vocals were too quiet, I’ll turn that shit up! Also it’s important to have good communication with your clients DURING the process. The thought that I’d make excuses for vox being too low etc and try to explain it to an unhappy client is hilarious. That would be so obnoxious.

I agree with you on the “cleaner mix”. People mix out a lot of the vibe because they mix with clarity in mind and look at some things like the listener is an engineer. They a lot of the time eq a vocal to a thin boxy performance. In the end it’s clean but now it’s boring. What does the record feel like?

Man I remember the old days when you just had a mic, mixing board, a 4 track recorder, pop filter and a sampler. You was lit back then. $hit got so complicated it don't seem fun anymore.

If you are saying to someone, 'someone told me', then you shouldn't be mixing for clients.

I agree sometimes imperfections turn to perfection it's a new day and age for music screw the standard stuff had your own sauce to your mix it's what I do with all mine and my clients love my sound and quality and all I have is a audio technical at4040 scralett 2i2 and presents preamp and protools it's not what equipment you have it's the man behind the daw 💯

Always appreciate your insights with so much available for us to use it is easy to get lost!!! having a sold understanding of why producers and engineers make the choices they make is key to understanding your own sound and what to do with every song or beat you make.

If that’s the case we might as well all be mixing the same song. I think it’s important for an engineer to do his own thang. The people will come to you because of what you do. Not what you know somebody else does.

Hello Curtis, I really love your take on this. Especially the part about adding too much to elements eventho they dont need it. I am 100% guilty of this. I always feel the need to change the sound to what my ear pleases eventho sometimes, the end result suffers. I was wondering what you think about using EQ and other tools as a creative tool instead of a way to "fix" a problem. I find myself sometimes trying to use EQ to create an unique sound rather then to fix a problem. I appreciate you, take care.

The Pros know what to do and how to do it. The Pros know how to talk to clients about how to accomplish a well done mix. The Pros don’t push off what works for them as the final outcome of something they see as their way or no way at all. I’m an Engineer I never push off those kind of vibes on people. I have my way of helping and sharing info on how to get things done. It’s even worse sometimes it’s the clients that be on this vibe with the Engineers about something they think they know or just learned and make things complicated.

I appreciate you, Curtiss, as sometimes I have a question like this, and what I've learned is to use your ears and cross reference like crazy, and most of the time, your mix will translate across the board; your topics are the best, you waste no time in covering issues that is most important in the music world, I approach each song one mix at a time not knowing what compressor or eq I may use, I call my mixing approach (PER, PER) for each piece, Good topic here!

I'm guilty of robbing some songs of life, i regret destroying such beautiful dynamics. at the same time, i've learned from that. the end result is above all the most important because you don't really judge your work, everyone else does and that's what matters.
