Maybe because a child has no way to escape while on the other hand an adult women put her self her in that situation, she did SOMETHING to go to prison and ok she only had to go through it for a year, a child would have to go through that until it was 18. There's a big difference. Please stop comparing a child to a grown ass women.

@stacey gewin i think youre also forgetting that prison is used for rehabilitation aswell as a punishment. You think woman go back to jail because they remember they had makeup there?? No. They go back because alot of them dont develop the skills neccessary to go back into civilization, they dont have the basic resources available to them to survive outside of jail. By the time these woman leave they ALREADY have qualification and skills needed to turn their life around. You cant just treat them worse than the outside world cause that proves it doesnt work, youre just creating a vicious cycle.

@stacey gewin and Madelyn Grace ... Very interesting that this punishment doesn't seem to deter people to do better - facts speak to the high number of re-admissions to the system, which no doubt contributes to a highly profitable industry to the benefit of a select few. The US is the only country that profits from it's prison system, incarceration has increased because it's profitable for people to be criminalised - did you miss the clear signposting in the introduction?! It also signalled that in the US the prison system as a deterrent doesn't work.... Perhaps you'd also like to also consider the possibility that the majority of women are not criminals but victims as clearly highlighted at 4.56... I find it utterly baffling that you overlook such outrageous statistics!? Are you closet misogynists?? Let me spell it out for you, the majority of women in prisons according to the statistics in the video should actually be in hospital or in safe houses / therapeutic and supportive environments to protect and assist them!! To even think to deny any rights or any goods given this context is abhorrent! Please be kind enough to share where you were schooled so I can be sure I don't send my daughter there...

Jungkooks Left nipple Pads and tampons are not privileges, they should be rights. Especially to women in prison. Period blood is a safety hazard, it’s ridden with germs that could definitely bring harm to woman SLEEPING in it. Stained sheets aren’t an issue, it’s the fact that these women have to make do with a situation that they cannot help. This isn’t about being ungrateful, it’s about giving imprisoned woman basic human rights. Of course prison isn’t supposed to be a comfortable experience, but providing pads and tampons to inmates at the very least will not impede rehabilitation, it’s purely a hygiene issue.

Jungkooks Left nipple Yes, they got themselves into their situations, whether it be from an unfortunate lack of judgement or because they simply didn’t think to consider consequences. Plain and simple.

There are male visitors coming into visit their gf or wives in prison and male prison officers comes in handy when dealing with MALE visitors - I had one occasion where a male visitor tried to smuggle drug to his gf and got violent and had to be restrained by 5 male officers. If there wasn’t male officers around female officers would have hard time and probably some would be injured. Also male officers are helpful when separating fights or if absolute necessary using force when dealing with violence. Women can be incredibly strong especially when adrenaline is kicking in

Well as prisons are part of the capitalist system and are owned as private businesses, and with all the fear of government and "watchdogs" in United States, they prefer this system as it is part of their freedom to do "whatever they want with their private property", therefore abusing the people in it. We don't vote for the owners of those "business" amd no power on them, but ironically it's freedom. So yeah we need a not corrupted or money hungry third party on wich we have a say.

I really had to decide if I wanted to say this, but it should be said: I myself was at Lowell Correctional in FL back in 2006. Luckily, I was sentenced with most my time already served, and only did 4 months there. I wasn't there long enough to see much of what was mentioned here, but I did see a male officer literally beat up a fellow female inmate - who he already had handcuffed. The whole incident started over her mumbling her DOC number during headcount and he thought it was insubordinate to do so. Once he started screaming at her, she got a little bit of attitude back, but for real, ot wasn't much. He ended up handcuffing her, making threats, and to everyone's horror in our "dorm", he began punching her and shoving her into a concrete wall repeatedly. It was 13 years ago and I'll never forget it. No other officer was in there at the time. Some inmates began screaming for help on behalf of the victim, others pounded on the door and windows. The neighboring dorm officers eventually heard the racket and quickly removed both of them from the dorm. It was terrifying. We all assumed he would be suspended at least, but he was back the next day. She was put in solitary confinement, and I personally didn't see her again before I was released

Yeah, I know some people would say that is sexist but let's be real, the majority of abuse is coming from male guards according to most female prisoners. And having to be naked in front of the male guards all the time, can be traumatic for a lot of these women that have probably had sexual abuses (mostly by men) in the past, and what kind of man seeks out becoming a guard in a women's prison in the first place? It doesn't seem like there is any oversight into what the guards are doing, it's like a playground for the ones that go there just for the purpose of finding easy victims.

You need some men though. Men are just stronger. You need men to be able to be there when the women riot and try to shank you. Women can be just as vicious/malicious. Don't discount their sex for anything. So the only thing men will have is their strength/size so some men would be a necessity.

Jenny Cork than don’t commit a crime and you wont have to use nothing. It’s that simple. All of these women knew before breaking the law that prisons don’t give tampons so if that’s your main concern than don’t break the law. And also. The reason these prisons don’t give the inmates all these luxuries is because it’s fucking PRISON. If they gave inmates every demand they wanted than what punishment is that? People would just keep breaking the law because they aren’t scared to go to jail because they know they’ll have it easy while they’re in there. Then get out and do it again and the cycle would never stop. Prison is not supposed to be a fun experience. It’s supposed to give you the consequence of your actions. It’s supposed to give you discipline because you committed a crime. Just like your parents would discipline you as a child, if that child grows up and is an adult who commits a crime than who is supposed to discipline them? That’s where the prison system comes in. If you can’t act like a contributing citizen to your society than someone else will come in to make sure you get a consequence to learn your lesson. Now wether you learn that lesson or not is up to each individual in the prison. You choose wether you want to be a changed person or not. But after you break into someone’s home and steal their shit for drug money I don’t think that person deserves to get eyelash extensions. Hell thats a luxury on the outside that most women who never commit crimes don’t get! The more luxuries the more the inmates demand for even more luxuries and then prison becomes something not fear. Which in turn would lead to more people committing crimes because they know it will be easy in prison. Now I don’t agree with the guards taking advantage of the inmates but trust me..you want our government to keep the prison systems..

Quite a bit. There is a LOT that goes on that only inmates and their friends and family knows about. I know several people who have been in there and are still in there. its horrible. They feed you food that looks like Alpo dog food. They withhold mail. I used to send care packages with paper, envelopes, and stamps and people never got their items. If you put money on their accounts they don't notify them that they can use it and the money gets eaten up by the system for "housing" fees. There is abuse by the guards be it verbal, physical, or mental. One of my friends died at Lowell because she had an iron deficiency and they would not give her anything to help with that like a special diet, or vitamins, which other inmates do get; not to mention she literally froze to death. She wrote me about a week before she died saying how cold she was and they would not even give her a blanket. Its sad the treatment that these inmates go through. it is not a cakewalk with tv, free phone calls, a bed, hot water, and clean living conditions. If inmates want to work on their cases or get help with legal research they are allowed 1 hour a week if that to look stuff up. I have an AA in Legal Studies and a Paralegal degree, among other college degrees and I know how long it takes to just research one thing, and how you have to pull one book to look up a statute, then another to coincide with that, so on and so forth. Nor to mention trying to write the judge, your Public defender has over 400 plus cases and once they are in Prison the system does not give a crap about them. If you want me to record a video for my channel about some of the things that go on in Marion County Jail, on up to the various prisons that women from the jail get sent to I will be more than happy to record video's on them., Not to mention I have hand written letters to show as proof of treatment.

KZbin User I'm a hardcore conservative woman and I believe that it's fair to give people creativity. They're not animals and like they said IN THE VIDEO you need a track record of good behavior and a desire to change. I'm pretty sure the officers can spot bullshit "I wanna change" statements since the program is very expensive and top tier according to the video.

When I was locked up, the only makeup we had on commisssry was mascara. So we improvised. We would get red M&M's and vaseline to make lipgloss and ground coffee would make a bronzer. Mascara was used for liquid eyeliner as well. Makeup is a big deal for us girls. It helped me feel feminine and confident, which is very easy to lose when you're locked up. It was my 1st and only time in jail, which I received a year probation for a non violent misdemeanor. I did 2 months for a violation of probation. We live and we learn. I am not proud that I landed myself in that situation, but no regrets, because in those 2 months I was able to learn a lot about myself and a lot about how the system works. (At least in the US) I now want to go to college to be a social worker.

There are more mens prisons then female prisons so you saying only females should work in a female prison makes the police officer job harder to get As many female officers would lose their job Please put some logic in your statement and don't act out of anger

Everyone should watch this. There needs to be more awareness of thus countries criminal justice system and the horrible living conditions, abuse, and dehumanzing that goes on in our jails and prisons. Especially for non violent offenders that need rehabilitation instead of being stuck in the revolving door of our criminal justice system.

Erica Varnado I can very much relate to your feelings, I feel the same. Nobody should be abused, used, or denied their basic human rights, regardless of what crime they may have committed. Nobody deserves that, and it's despicable that this is the current state of the prison system. But I also feel that people who commit crimes, and are being punished by serving a jail sentence, shouldn't have access to "luxuries" of life that go beyond the things that are a basic human need or necessity. Makeup and beauty are not essential items, and even on the outside of jail in regular society, they are often seen as a privilege to many people. When you choose to commit a crime punishable by jail time, you are essentially choosing to live a life where only your basic needs will be met (which unfortunately isn't always the case, as seen here). You are choosing to leave the "luxuries" of life behind, however small or large they may be. Prison shouldn't be "fun" (not that it is, even with makeup, but you get the point). I do 100% support rehabilitation and vocational programs for inmates who want to do better for themselves, and I think they are an amazing thing, but inmates having access to not only just makeup and hair tools, but eyelash extensions, nail polish, and other pricey beauty luxuries isn't something I fully support. Inmates can be taught cosmetology skills without having things done on themselves. It's a tricky thing for me to have an opinion on, as I truly do feel for inmates who are stuck in the system but want to better themselves. I can't imagine how difficult it must be behind bars, and to no longer have the freedoms you're used to, but I'm also not going to be committing a crime to find out for myself either. I sympathize with those women who are putting in the work and effort to be rehabilitated, and I commend them for it. I want them to succeed. I just don't quite know where that line should be drawn between being them punished for their actions with only their basic needs being met and then not knowing what is truly needed for successful rehabilitation. As someone who has never committed a crime, I can't even afford eyelash extensions, regular manicures, and regular hair maintenance (only once every one to two *years* do I get a $10 haircut). I *love* makeup and beauty, and I know how good it can make you feel sometimes, but I do see it as a luxury. And especially in prison, where people are supposed to be serving time as punishment, I don't understand how access to those expensive luxuries to be used on other inmates is included in their punishment. I just feel like there are other methods to teach cosmetology, like utilizing mannequins, rather than human inmates, to practice skills on. Like you said though, it is bit of a moral dilemma. I don't know the right answer, or if there is one, and I'm not exactly sure where the line should be drawn when it comes to having luxuries in prison. Regardless, the current system in place needs a complete overhaul, as the conditions, environment, lack of rehabilitation funding, and non accessibility of basic human needs and rights is atrocious. But unfortunately I don't see that happening anytime soon. My heart goes out to the inmates who are currently being (or have in the past) subjected to the type of abuse displayed in this video. 💕

Kitty Cat yea but thats easier said than done. Once ur in the system is almost impossible to get out of it. Especially if your a drug offender. If u do get releases u are then put on parole or a drug court system which requires u to have a job but u have to be in meetings almost everyday and be able to be called in for random drug screens several times a week. Its so hard finding somewhere that will hire u and put up with all of that, let alone if u already have a felony offense. They need more rehabilitation instead of dehumanizing. Then helping ppl after release to live a more productive life so ppl dont have to keep going back to what they no. Alot of ppl dony have family tp turn to for help or have the money to afford rent or a car. So there really is alot more tp consider than just well just stop making the same mistake. Addiction is a disease and needs to be treated and it takes more than just not using.

If you think gaining employment should be based on gender, then no. Maybe we can only have female gynecologists or male proctologists cause wHo KnOwS, why would someone choose a career revolving specifically around the other sex unless they have predatory intentions right? Maybe we should stop hiring white people to patrol borders, or sending white cops to patrol black neighborhoods, cause why expect someone to be able to competently do their job if there is a preconceived notion of bias? I wouldn't say bad idea so much as flat out dumb, nice double standard there. Fact is, people exist in their minds and are shaped around their culture growing up, not their gender or ethnicity. #1 rule of egalitarianism: Women are just as bad as men, and men are just as bad as women. Being male or female doesn't predispose you to being a trash person one way or another. The fact this even crossed your mind is a good sign you need to expand yourself a bit broader.

They should turn some prisons in to rehabilitation centres and call them "rehabilitation prisons", coz jail isn't really doing any healing for inmates. Most criminals are people who were in a bad place, making bad decisions, but underneath all that tough, there's a good soul. No matter how manipulative a person can be, you can tell the criminal who wants to make a change in their life, and the one who's a lost case.

The system IS the problem. Some of us women have been through sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional neglect. To put it short, some people don't grow up with the white picket fence, education, good parents, etc. So it becomes a cycle that some children don't have the best start, and then we end up in prison. And then the system becomes our parent, and we are at it's mercy. And we all k now, that this system is not perfect and there are bad people out there in a position of power, that abuse their position on a population that has been living an abused life. BUT, i believe that this creates the most beautiful people walking this earth, because such a hard life, creates a closer relationship with God and the understanding that is called empathy.

Before I finally got myself into a treatment program and really took it seriously, I'm ashamed to admit that I spent 5 days in jail on a misdemeanor shoplifting charge....5 days isn't much but it really opened my eyes to some of the horrible things going on in there. It was traumatic but in a way, I'm glad it happened because it was one of the things that made me realize I didn't want that life and propelled me into my recovery. There was 2 different male guards that were trading sexual favors for basic necessities and contraband as well. An older woman who was an alcoholic collapsed quit breathing....the guards called the ambulance but just stood there and did not bother starting cpr. Luckily for that poor woman, one of the kitchen workers was just getting back from her shift as it was happening and she had some medical training so she proceeded to do cpr on this woman and gave her mouth to mouth until the ambulance finally showed up. She made it, thank god, but those guards never lifted a finger to help save her. They just stood there and were even conversating like a women dying in front of you is just an every day occurrence. It was a seizure of course and they knew she was coming in an alcoholic and should've been in the medical dorm but they didn't. It's a coed facility and the men have it pretty bad too. They gave an elderly man a top bunk which is against protocol since he have a seizure disorder and had trouble with mobility. He ended up falling off it and broke his hip but it took the inmates over an hour to get the guards attention and when they did, they came in and glanced at him still laying on the floor and decided he was faking it and walked right back out. That old man laid there for 8 fucking hours....it took the inmates getting so upset that they were about to riot to get them to do anything. His fellow inmates had been begging for them to help him for 8 hours yall. When they finally decided to do their job, they discovered his hip was severely broken and would require immediate surgery. 8 fucking hours laying on a hard concrete floor with a broken hip....it makes me wanna cry every time I think about it. His mobility was already not great but after that, he had to have a wheelchair. They treat those people like animals. Or like they're disposable. The last night I was there, a mentally ill women in my dorm started having a very loud psychotic fit and instead of taking her out of the dorm and attending to her, they told her that she better cut it out before one of the other inmates whooped her ass for waking everyone up. They told her they'd do nothing to stop it either. It was an extremely disturbing experience to say the least.

This was so interesting. And really upsetting. Women get sent to prison to be rehabilitated (and punished ofc) but because of this hazardous environment change is almost impossible. What a shitshow the American justice system is..

tschoppomotäng as this video is about women, it’s not necessary to note that men have it even worse. Not that it’s not important, but for once it’s about women instead of men.

“There’s no quick fix” Here’s an idea, get rid of male guards in female prisons.

Light Yagami Did Nothing Wrong they need to make it more desirable for women I did this job for a while on both sides of the spectrum of male and female. Female guards are highly saught after to a point they'd just hire crappy women to be guards. To meet quotas but in order to get many good female guards to locate to a women's prison would have to alot of benefits to move the distance. And it's not a highly desirable job for alot of women. I don't think that having males working in a women's prison is wrong but I do think they need to change it. But Oregon where I worked was really good about pushing stuff under the rug on both sex prisons of guards having relationships with inmates and bringing in contraband to them. I think there should be much more harsh punishments for the guards I think they should be publicly exploited maybe they would think twice

The lady at 11:24 actually wanted to meet up with that office...disgusting. If you slow down the speed and look she responded to his dirty message with "K I go home once a month...I'll hit you up. Gotta go have a good day." This is horrible

Pads and tampons should be free. If everyone had periods they would definetly be free. So should water and certain medicine.
