For the people out there, no. You do not go into academic environment, studying various sciences, for "jobs" and "salaries..." If that is what you are after, go learn something practical and something that's most demanded on the market, by the rich and the powerful, so you can submit the rest of your waking hours to your bosses and the people on top, giving out orders. :) You go into academic environment because you are a curious, thoughtful, enthusiastic individual, excited about knowing more and more on how the world - and its components - works, to pursue what's interesting to you and whatever catches your mind the most, conduct your own research, etc. So, when and if you study stuff like cognitive psychology, linguistics, neuroscience and so on and so forth at universities, STOP focusing on superficial things like "jobs" and the market. If that is what your primary focus is on, you are at the wrong place. Money will eventually come as a byproduct of your knowledge, curiosity, interests and fascination with the topics you pursue.

Thank you so much for this video! I'm in my second year of high school and I'm considering doing linguistics in university. The biggest thing I was worried about was job opportunities/employment and it's great to hear that shouldn't be an issue. I love that this degree could lead to so many different opportunities and career paths - I don't really care about doing something directly related to it. The only huge drawback is that people don't know what it is? As long as I love it, I couldn't care less lmao

Hi Becca! I’ve been contemplating getting a linguistics degree and this video helped me so much! I love the overview of the entire major and all of the things you had to say about job opportunities because that’s one of the reasons I wouldn’t follow through with the major. You are so right that everyone has to work in order to get a job after graduation; I never thought of it that way. Besides, I’d rather enjoy my time in college learning something that interests me than be miserable for the four years lol. Thanks for the video!!!

Nice, I'm a 2021 graduate Linguisitcs major. Gonna be an English teacher in Japan in March/April. I do have thoughts of getting my masters for research. My long term goal with that would be to work with endangered languages and help preserve them. Unfortunately due to Covid and other factors affcted my mental health and my grades. I graduated with mediocre grades sadly, so that's realistically is not an likely option. I do plan on being a translator one day, I guess due to people not knowing what linguistics is truly about, I can leverage that.

You definitely cannot go into speech language pathology or audiology with a linguistics degree. You need an entirely different degree or set of pre-reqs to be admitted to graduate school, which is required to practice as an SLP. I am one. Linguistics degrees never cover the content needed to study speech-language pathology.

A bit off-topic, but African-American English or AAVE is simultaneously stigmatized and fashionable. It's a weird paradox of the dialect, but at the same time, it has become increasingly normalized.

Hi! I first wanna say I loved your video super informative and clear!! I actually graduated with my BA in psych a few years back. After college though, it was so hard to find a job. I applied and applied -and no one would give me a chance. I’d write and write strong cover letters and have strong resumes but it was tough. Eventually, through a reference, I began teaching and was a teacher for 3 years. But I didn’t love teaching. Im pursing a BA now in Media/Communications. I’m wondering what was your key to success in getting a job outside of your major/field - and just getting more callbacks? I would prefer to have more job success outside of education - and hopefully in media or psych - but it’s so hard to! Its been also so hard In psych is so hard to break into the field after undergrad or to get more research opportunities too! This comment is long winded - but thank u for taking the time in advance!! :))

I am finishing up my Linguistics degree and let’s just say I LOVE IT … but… I totally regret doing it. As someone doing their first university degree in their 30s, I should have followed my head not my heart and now I am looking at another few years of study. Would I do it again? If I was 20 years younger, yeah, maybe. Looking at doing law or speech pathology now.
@Lymor1

Why do you regret doing it?
@Mellyouttaphase
@Mellyouttaphase Жыл бұрын
@@Lymor1 Because it isn’t immediately applicable for me. It’s a degree that you need to then study further which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but at my age can become a very expensive and time-consuming endeavour. It’s a tough one for me, because once again, I have thoroughly enjoyed most of the course material but unless you have time and money to burn, or a clear path that can utilise it well, I can’t responsibly recommend doing a linguistics degree.

I have always been interested in linguistics and am currently learning Japanese. Why? I want to understand how the language works, and it’s fascinating! But I started college as a theater major; my first class was in voice for actors. I want to draw your attention to something you do when speaking-which is to use a question inflection frequently, rising up in tone at the end of a sentence or phrase that is not a question. This used to be called “Valley Girl” speech, and it’s not the most professional sounding. I don’t mean to offend you, but I would respectfully suggest that you talk with a voice coach in this area.
