New Directions, with Lester Bowie, Eddie Gomez and John Abercrombie blew my mind. I spent a few months trying to figure out what they were doing, and many years trying to catch a little of Jack DeJohnette's playing. His drumming with Bill Evans in Montreux is also a must.

Great segment from that interview. Bill Stewart is clearly a stewarD of the best jazz drummers. Impeccable timing and creativity, always completely clean. Had the pleasure to have seen him a few times in europe and Jack once nearby in Luxembourg (also Roy Haines earlier) several years ago. One of my favorite tracks with Jack is on Time and Tide, which you might know. Also all is stuff with Dave Holland, and on and on. Thanks for posting :)

Bill is so advanced. Very few drummers on his level, if anyone. - I think Bill could imitate Jack perfectly but certainly not the reverse.

DeJohnette is a very difficult drummer to imitate, he doesn’t have any particular drum licks that uses all the time unlike many other drummers that do. I’ve never ever heard any drummers trying to cop his style. I’ve heard many that try to imitate Elvin and Tony but never Jack.
