@z1berzerker Yeah if you do the pavement pounding at 20-25 hz, then yeah a low aligned box/port is good for that. The lower the tuning, the less output due to what Patrick explained (usually not much signal at those Hz's), and many subs struggle do to cone size. UNLESS, you use one of Patrick's custom 24" monster subs! Those will easily hit them low freqs!

Back in the 80s and 90s i used to build my enclosures as sealed, tuned to as close to 20hz as possible, because i thought that would give me the best bass. Wrong! My subs went deeper than my friends', but not nearly as loud spl. I can attest to what Patrick is speaking to from experience. Took me about 15-17 years of fudging around with box resonance, port size (even though box tuning software says a 1.5" port will work, its still too small for 2 12s 😂), tuning frequency etc. Here's Patrick laying it out so simple, wish i knew this in the 80s!

I remember in 97 building a SQ set up isobaric bandpass with 4 12 clam shelled tuned 35 hz Port went through the rear deck it sounded nice clean it was loud and awesome but my 1 10 in a ported box play a lot louder and the customer was mad I had to redo the whole system

Yeah, I've got 3 15's tuned to 26hz, and 8 8" tuned to 30hz. Doesn't get super loud. 136.4 on termlab but sounds absolutely amazing in the truck.

And what if we want the "windy-ness" of high excursion woofers in the 25-30HZ range? Does moving the frequency below 30HZ affect performance if it had a higher fs but a high xmax? I'm genuinely curious about this, especially with subwoofers that don't have a high xmax, but want to play music that has bass frequencies below 30 HZ?

You can, but won't yield much. The lower the frequency, the larger the sine wave. Hence, more cone movement. There's a YT video where a guy put like a dozen 4 or 5" woofers in a 25 hz tuned box. It moved the windows, but was probably very inefficient...

I have high fs woofers, they can play the lows, but in a larger box on less power. The real issue is trying not to burn the coils wanting more output on some songs.

The windiness has to do with a ratio between the amount of excursion and total displacement versus how much your windows are rolled down

Devide fs by qts. The closer you are to 50 sealed. The closer you are to 100 ported. 75 either sealed or ported. Can't remember the article that gave me this info. But that's a good rule to go by.

Nice vid. I like ported boxes, but if you tune low you can miss out on the high buzzy bass (40-60). My goal is to have 2 different response peaks so i went about it by running 2 different ported boxes at once, just tuned different. One box is 32hz, the other 44hz. After tweaking the alignments and phasing, I got them to not cancel eachother and they basically perform like what they call a 6th order (which is just 2 ports in one box anyway).

@@RobotUnderground hey man you can think what you want, but this is what I've been running over 4 years. Everyone i talk to that hears it thinks it's more than 2 12s, or 15s. I'm telling you the way I have it arranged, they just play the way they would alone, but together in perfect synergy. Each sub is on its own amp and I have them crossed appropriately their box tuning. I actually have a couple of shorts you can watch n see for yourself. I guarantee you play one through an actual system that bumps or good headphones you won't come back n tell me it sounds bad. ✌

Yo yo Patrick, this Circuit City Roadshop installation days chap, has long been a sealed box fan bc of response. I now own my very first quality ported enclosure. As compared to the ported I had heard ( 2 circular holes at 10 and 2).were lousy. I am a musical fanatic who needs a full spectrum experience

Ouch! It is practical, but it is not free bass at all. At port tuning frequency, the efficiency is quite damn bad. So the hump comes at great power consumption and heat.

Q being high doesnt do anything to group delay in 1/4 wave or ported enclosures. Its a sort of distance and cycle relationship. Ported is more like 180° phase shift at the fB, 1/4 wave 90°. Phase and group delay are "kissing cousins" and you'll also find every box is having some reflection or 1/4 wave interaction... So just about nothing you see out there is straight "ported" or "1/4 wave". Sealed boxes are also affected by standing waves in the box, a big reason people stuff the box with polyfil or other things which patrick doesnt seem to believe in but whatever

When you add in cabin gain you will get about a 12db rise starting around 50-70hz, depending on the size of the vehicle, and it will rise as the frequency gets lower. So that roll off that you're showing is actually just for the enclosure itself outside of a car. Inside the car it works completely different but that is a great starting point. The main reason ppl build bandpass enclosures now is to be able to fit a lot of subs. I have 6 15s in mine and made a 4th order b pillar wall. Much better than having the rear hatch sounding like it's about to come off. Lol

If using a sealed box or 4th order then the sub needs to have a long voice coil and a lot of excursion. Bc the sub moves way more than it will in a ported box. The port does most of the work in a ported box so a lot of excursion isn't really needed unless playing way below or above tuning frequency.

@@allmotorhashi run a epicenter, my box is tuned to 29HZ, but I listen to a wide range of music, rap/rebassed, country, rock, Spanish music, and the epicenter helps a ton with music that doesn't have bass because it has been filtered out or due to instrument limitations, listening to rap/rebassed music it's not in use, then Spanish and country I turn up my epicenter so that the midbass frequencies are played at the subwoofer frequencies, which is the basic function of the epicenter to drop frequencies in the 2nd and 3rd harmonics down to the 1st harmonics.
