I don’t draw a lot of realism and I absolutely love the Faber Castell pencils. I use them both for sketching and for colouring my art and I’ve found that it works great for my more cartoony style. I absolutely love the Faber Castell pencils aswell my art teacher has always reccomended them and let us borrow the set from the classroom. I've drawn realistic animals with them same as yourself and I personally loved how they turned out but I did use them on brown paper which may have helped. I was able to blend them but I did have to go hard and buy a few extra colours I was needing but overall I really love them and use them in unison with their watercolour pencils. @@aoife.1511 :O It’s awesome that you could borrow some from the classroom!! I bought a 12 pack after I saw an art KZbinr recommend it and later in upgraded to a 36 pack since I really enjoyed them. Yeah getting a smooth blend and full saturation can be quite tricky. Toned paper, either gray or brown, can really be a great help! Makes it easier to have more control over both shadows and highlights and it gives a great base layer that isn’t just plain white. The one thing to just remember when blending is going in thin layers and slowly building up colours, unlike Prismacolors when you can use high pressure and much saturation right away and still get a good blend. Sadly for that one needs to be patient and my patience often runs thin XD Like I wrote in the comment above, I use the faber castells to sketch sometimes. It works great if you’re doing a watercolour, alcoholic marker or coloured pencil piece as it gives of a much softer look, no markings after a regular pencil. Sometimes I just use the coloured pencils as lineart, instead of using a harsh black inking pen. All in all, the Faber Castells are probably my favourite coloured pencils ever, Prismacolor laying in second place. :]

Prismacolors used to by my favorite until I realized I really liked doing the pretty layer work that Polychromos pencils require. Faber Castels can actually bland really great, maybe just not with the techniques you are used to. If you use thin layers letting the colors cross over one another slowly adding layers the blanding is really smooth. Maybe try researching blending techniques or watch other artists that use that brand to find out what works best with them. They do not function like the prisma colors but they are not worse, just different and maybe not what you used too. BTW I love ur channel, ur art is great and I really appreciate ur honesty and character.

I've been using the Polychromos pencils for years now. I got my first 36 set when I turned 16 from my parents and over the years, I bought the full set after saving up my own money. I'm turning 24 in a few days and still use them. Where I'm from (the north of the Netherlands) the Prisma Colors are not widely available in art stores (and I always get my art supplies in-store). *Scott* Have you ever tried the Derwent brand ? They make several types of coloured pencils with different mixed ingredients, with some being made with a waxy core (Studio pencils), while others have a more chalky core. They also do a full 72 set of pastel pencils as well, and of course a full 72 set of watercolour pencils, which act like proper watercolours. They also make specialist pencils like the "Onyx", which has the blackest black you can get. They recently added new light fast pencils series which are guaranteed museum archive quality, and something no one else makes - the Derwent "Inktense", in both pencils and blocks. They have an ink based colour system that you can use differently than any other pencil ever. It's akin to having a jar of ink in a pencil, and you can use them wet or dry. The effects you can get with the blocks is pretty amazing and also unique as you can shave specks off, use wet with a brush, or colour like a pencil, then add streaks or sections of water and they totally change how they look, they colour mix, layer, and change opacity and depth - you should really try them as it's an experience in itself, with the different results available. All Derwents colours come in sets of 72, and can be used with each other, to mix and match, but some have more, such as the "Artist" set which has 144 colours, and can be sharpened to a very precise point. While the "Drawing" set was specifically designed for use by wildlife artists and has colours that especially relate to fur, nature, and wild animal drawings, trees, landscape blues, browns & greens. Please try a small set of the Derwent blocks, I would love to see the results and hear what you think of them, as I doubt very much you have used anything quite like them. There are a few artists who have put up KZbin videos showing the learnig pťt

Arts recently released a 126 color set of the same pencils. I loved the 72 set so much for sketchbook work and smaller stuff that I bought the 126 set immediately lol it’s the pencils and quality so there’s no worry there. They’re really great for the price. I LOVE Fabre Castell because I do a lot of light layers. I use Faber-Castell and Caran D’Ache and Prismacolor for my own artwork or if I wore to ever do a traditional commission piece. But I love Arrtx for sketchbook work or for going over alcohol marker work or watercolors.

For a second I thought you meant you were going to draw literal beetles, like the bugs. Also, I really appreciate how much you think about people on a strict budget, it’s really thoughtful!

I fell in love the first time I tried prizma colors in the 7th grade. I like oil pastel if I'm going BIG. Like wall size. I would love to see you try a giant piece. It's fun!

I agree. Caran d'Ache are Queen! .. faber-castell are great for layering and fine detail and they are also lightfast. I love them but as they are oil based, not for blending as such.. it's takes time to make the most of them but worth every penny. 👍

Also if you want to try prismacolours but are on a budget, I highly recommend the prismacolour scholar set, I got mine for 20 dollars (back to school sale at Walmart) and it was a set of 60. They aren't as smooth but I found them easier to use than the premiers as a beginner. Hope this helps!
