I live in Florida and every time I hear one of these stories about introducing something else into the environment, all I can think of is Love Bugs, it just seems there's never a happy ending to these stories and they do these things without knowing what the consequences will be long-term, it's scary😮😮

The Zika virus thing is a bit concerning. That is a major problem if true. It destroys my argument FOR allowing GM on stuff other than food. GM in our food supply has an evil side in that they made our food more resistant to a defoliant so they could use the defoliant to kill weeds in their crops. It is not only makes the food itself modified, but it allows them to introduce more defoliant into our food system.

i feel like the main problem is that they used herpes(which is a human virus) to genetically modify mosquitos who in turn stab us. its.. just a terrible idea. Couldnt they have used any other virus that hasnt been afflicting people for the majority of human existence?

Remember Jurassic Park, "Life will find a way"? If it could happen with mosquitoes it could happen with moths too. They could start reproducing and end up eating even more crops than they do now. But of course, more research is needed. Except they won't do the research until it's too late.

What could happen? All they modified is the ability for the males to reproduce and/or for females to be born from the males. Any negative effects would be directly tied to that. So if something negative were to occur, it would either be less of the pests for animals to eat, or the pests adapting to breed in another manner in order to continue to survive or thrive. The example of the virus is curious and concerning. But it supports my point. The virus adapted by infecting modified males and adapting in their offspring. The modified insects themselves are just protein the same as any other bug.

I believe that many pests can be controlled if they did away with monocropping. Planting hundreds or thousands of acres of only one plant encourages massive attacks by insects. In the technique of interplanting with two, three or more different kinds of plants, pests are limited in spread and kind. . Intercropping is often not used, due to the need for harvesting machines that often cannot accommodate other plants in the rows. There are more issues, too, such as water needs of different plants. Often, certain pests will feed on the pests of other plants, too. The use of predatory insects has shown to be effective. But I believe that relying less on technology and more on proven methods of control might help. Some countries use geese and ducks by the thousands to comb the fields to feast on the caterpillars/worms in crops. There are videos showing how this is done, in some other countries.
