Finally some quality comparisons and a quality video that goes at least a tiny little bit into the technical details of photogrammetry. Most videos/creators don't do that.

Thanks. Yeah it's possible to go deeper than that, yet the notion of spatial fidelity gives at least some sort of reference frame within which different capturing devices can be evaluated.

What camera do you use for photoscanning? Is it a dslr, a mirrorless, a smartphone camera? Leave a comment! :) p.s. Throughout the course, we were using Canon 80D with Sigma 17-55mm f/2.8 and Sony A7III Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8, and the whole range of test devices: OnePlus 6t pro, Sony XTIV, Canon 550D, etc.

Using a Samsung Galaxy Note 10 plus. The overall sharpness and fidelity is good, especially with the Pro mode, but it underperforms in low light conditions (eg:indoors) and the results have a lot of motion motion blur or noise, like you explained. Using RealityCapture gives better results than meshroom in my case.

Canon SX120IS пока хватает. "Resolution", "Spatial fidelity", "Raw sensor data" , а так же то, какой камерой делается съемка не имеют никакого значения если снимать прозрачные, бликующие и однотонные поверхности - результат всегда будет плохой и нужно использовать уже сканирование лазером. НО есть выход иногда - на снимаемый объект (либо его неудобную часть) можно нанести/напылить "краску" чтоб поверхность была не бликовая и не монотонная , а была близка по виду как гранит - зернистая. А текстуру можно получить на объекте например проецированием фото на модель либо каким-другим удобным способом.

Mostly Sony A6400 (24mpix APSC) with tamron 17-70 f2.8. Killer combo when it comes to price/quality. Sometimes when I don't have the camera on me I just use my phone with Reality Scan app.

What about a "high-end" phone? Let's say an iPhone 13 or Android equivalent? Are the results comparable to DSLR or are they just slightly better than midrange smartphone? P.S. Thanks for the amazing info in the video!

Smartphones have a lot of enhancement filters automatically activated. The main difference between a mid-range smartphone and the iPhone is the quality of these filters. The raw files are not as good as DSLRs due to the sensor size and lens quality.

There is a datasample set for the "Reality Capture Gingerbread man". The pictures are captured with a Galaxy A71 smartphone. It's all about the quality of the raw data. They just used ISO 36. What helps is the wide DOF on these small lenses. For macro shot photogrammetry, say insects (museums do these extensively), Focusstacking is used to get a very sharp picture at every camera position.

Oh we used so many different cameras, starting back more than 10 years ago with some really cheap $100-200 compacts, then moving to dslrs (Canon 550d, then a mid-range crop-sensor Canon 80D and so on), then Sony a7iii which is in a full-frame league, but bought used. We photoscanned using smartphones as well, so I guess it boils down to following the best practices of photogrammetry and getting most out of the equipment you have. :)

Define affordable. Nowadays cameras are so good that even a camera from 4-5 years ago can produce excellent photos. Probably the best choice would be to go back to several generations before to find something really affordable.

@@paweljankiewicz1383 I definitely second that, the best bet would be to search among the 4-5 years old cameras, there are amazing higher-end options in this segment which became, like, 10 times cheaper over this period (well, I'm exaggerating it a bit, but not too much).

Probably because you need to close the aperture anyway, slightly more on the fullframe cameras, slightly less on the MFT sensors, but it has to be closed, so why pay more :D right?

I thought it's a pretty off-topic video for our 3d Shrimps, but at the same time I *know* that this question is in the minds of pretty much everyone wanting to do some photoscanning. And while I don't want to give concrete recommendations, I think it's still important to understand the principles of choosing the capturing device (aside from the budget :) )
