A black rat snake climbed up a PVC pipe (used as a conduit for wires) from the basement to my son's closet! He saw a little tongue flick under his closet door! I think a mouse might have also used that conduit. Rat snake 1, mouse 0. Amazing creatures!

We have a couple of large black ratsnakes living on and around out property. Every so often they make an appearance. They are surprisingly long. We named the larger (great grandma snake) Gertrude. But I have never seen them climb. I didn't know they could climb that well!

@natureatyourdoor it's quite remarkable what a snake can do as far as climbing I personally used to be a little weary of all snakes due to dad anyways shot rattlesnakes but once my mom way later in life had a wild caught gopher snake and seeing a young child poking at the face of it not knowing any better due to there age and it not attacking the child I had no more fear of the non venomous snakes even when they are throwing a tissy fit from being in shed and having been bitten in the face I still absolutely love the non venomous snakes and will always do my best to at least have one snake in my possession because they are wonderful creatures currently own a normal ball python and love him to death 😊

Can you show us a black snake climbing a wobbly 5' long x 8" diameter stovepipe baffle, please? I've heard differing reports that they can/can't...
@natureatyourdoor9 ай бұрын
I will have to try that next time I pick up a large black snake. I think they are likely to be able to do it...especially if motivated by a birds nest.

I found a 6ft black snake on my roof today. I have no idea how it got up there because I have 2 foot soffit overhangs all the way around the house. I do have a tree that is about 30 foot above the house and it was windy but I don't know if it could have survived a fall that far if it fell, assuming that's what happened.
@natureatyourdoor2 жыл бұрын
That is pretty amazing ..if you have a gutter down spout I am sure he negotiated that! Pretty amazing either way...they are amazing climbers!

Hi Frank Awsome video. Black snakes are awsome. They are very good at eating mice. I've never seen a venomous snake near my house because of my pet black snakes. God bless teacher. 😊

An inverted metal cone wrapped around pole is effective if on a pole. Yeah...they can pretty much climb anything.

Thanks for this. Can you please tell me what the circumference is of the small tree? And, if this is a pet snake, I'd like to know if you can film it again without you moving the camera as it climbs the small tree? Thank you for the video.

Is it normal for snakes to be this docile? I always thought snakes would be aggressive if you hung around them too much.
@natureatyourdoor2 жыл бұрын
Good question Cam. Some snake species are naturally more agressive than others. For example .. "harmless" garter snake can be very snappy and water snakes...well... I could never do this with a water snake. A lot is in my approach to the snake..and like humans...different individuals have different temperants. This completely wild snake was very cooperative!!!

Hi. I have a question, can snakes climb a flat, slightly rocky wall? and if there is no rodents or mice in your house, will it still climb up your walls? Thanks you :)
@natureatyourdoor3 жыл бұрын
I am sure it can climb a rocky wall. Aside when I was artificially demonstrating their climbing ability...i don't think they would actually climb a wall of a home unless after a bird s nest...which is the only time I have seen them climbing on a man made structure in nature!

Do you think a black snake could climb fencing? I'm planing on getting rabbits, and I was going to do a small size hardware cloth going up the first 3 feet around the rabbit run, in addition to a bigger mesh going up and across the top. But now I'm questioning if that will be enough.
@natureatyourdoor4 жыл бұрын
Yes. Sigh. I think they could. Not sure that they would like the texture of galvanized hardware cloth.
