To produce an electric vehicle (EV) battery, between 200,000 and 1,500,000 pounds (or 90 to 680 tonnes) of earth needs to be dug and moved. This figure doesn't include the additional materials and chemicals used to refine and process the ores. Lithium: The world has enough lithium to power the electric vehicle revolution, but only one-quarter of it is economically viable to mine. Recycling: 80-90% of the metals used in batteries can be reused after mining. Time: It takes at least four to five years to build lithium mines, and even longer for lithium extracted from brine. Demand: The International Energy Agency estimates that electric cars use 173kg more minerals than petrol cars.

Humans didn’t exist 66 millions years ago During this Mesozoic Era - from about 250 to 66 million years ago - the concentrations of CO2 in the atmosphere were around 16 times higher than now, creating a "greenhouse climate” with temperatures on average six to nine degrees warmer than today. Humans are responsible for increased CO2 we are adding giga tonnes each year.
@Luther793452 ай бұрын
@@andrew30m The average temperature of the Earth has gone up 1.2 degrees in the last 200 years. And it currently stands at 57 degrees not even close to the 81 degrees it was in the Mesozoic era. And during that time nature flourished and that was when primates started evolving into human beings.
@andrewcavallo187727 күн бұрын
@@Luther79345 I urge you to understand how natural selection works. If a species cannot adapt to a new environment quick enough, it dies. In the mesozoic era, the species that eventually evolved into humans had millions of years to do so. But a 1.2° increase in 200 years is so extraordinarily fast of a temperature change, that if this same trend continues, and even quickens, most life on earth simply will not survive. Humans will likely carry on due to what we are capable of technologically, but the natural environment will suffer so immensely that it could essentially be another gradual mass extinction event. Now, that being said, it’s far away, but the longer we wait to address it, the more erratic and extreme our weather patterns become, costing trillions of dollars in damages and displacing tens of millions from their homes, over time. And especially in terms of droughts, food shortages due to dust storms, fires, and the simple lack of natural water sources for irrigation will have a major impact on the human population.

The fact is that the Chinese emit 2 1/2 times more greenhouse gases than the United States. And the difference is growing ever larger. Four years ago China pledged to be carbon neutral -- by 2060! China is still manufacturing coal-fired power plants. Plants emitting thick black smoke as we have not seen in the United States for 30 years or more. The Chinese claim, rightly, that cheap coal power improves the standard if living of their lower classes. But if the danger of global warming is that great, that consideration must bow to the coming crisis. The question in the election should be who can cooperate with the Chinese as the two nations partner to fight the threat. Both candidates offend China by advocating high tariffs on Chinese manufactured goods, in place of the free trade that capitalists have preferred. The Biden Administration has been especially hostile to the Chinese. Biden has said that he will defend Taiwan, 100 miles off the Chinese coast and 6000 miles from the United States, with military force against the Chinese. When Nancy Pelosi traveled to Taiwan, against the strongest of objections from China and from many including Thomas Friedman, three-time Pulitzer Price winning New York Times columnist on foreign affairs. Biden was against it but did not stop the visit. It was little publicized that China broke off communications with our military as a result of her visit, which had no purpose other than Pelosi receiving praise for her past assistance. Trump has generally shown a stronger desire for less U.S. military involvement overseas. If Harris is very friendly towards climate change, you would not know it from this campaign. But I could not tell you who to vote for based on the little we know concerning the candidates' attitude toward China and climate change. We are overwhelmed with the issues of illegal immigrants and abortion, but no one is talking about their attitude towards China, especially what we will do in response to a Chinese invasion of Taiwan. China has missiles armed with powerful non-nuclear explosives that can do great damage to our cities.

@@AlbertMark-nb9zo What!. Are we not trying to lower greenhouse gases as quickly as possible. And China emits 2.5 times more than the United States. Our carbon dioxide emission are going down. For China not until 2060! do they expect them to decline. And that's including their us of clean power. It's clear that China has the most work to do and that's not political. Those that include the fact that over history the U.S. has been the largest polluter is irrelevant. Were they supposed to anticipate the effect of greenhouse gases? Put the industrial revolution on hold. That revolution has raised the standard of living of we humans by a lot.. People who get political about this well not help matters.

@@theatrain1323 - Spread across a pop 4-5 TIMES that of the US. CO2 comes from housing, heating, producing food, etc. They aren't supposed to do any of that? Not eat? Carbon intensity for EVERY society has gone up as they developed, then gone down. The US has a more mature socio-economy. China does not, despite some high tech trappings. They have spent MORE money than the US on green power. Except that money is spread across that larger population.

@@AlbertMark-nb9zo I'm not saying that it is apple to apple. I'm not saying that China is morally or politically inferior to the United States because it is so far behind us in eliminating CO2. I'm saying that we must take the situation as we find it, and the situation as we find it is one of dire danger from China's emissions, a solution must be found for it that will not throw a billion Chinese back into the stone age. Do you believe that the problems can be solved more quickly if the two top economic and scientific nations in our civilization work together and share resources. Military confrontation or standoff between the two countries will tie up resources of both countries and slow the solution of the problem, as immediate military concerns will push climate concerns into second place. I have made my point, and you may agree or disagree as you like.

We need normal people to do 2 things. One no more important than the other. 1: Vote for people who aren’t absolute imbeciles and recognize that actions (emitting thermal-storing gases into the air which is measured by the billions of metric tonnes per day) have consequences (the earth choking and wheezing like a smoker). 2: Invest in clean energies. For real. Get solar panels on your house, pay them off rapidly, and then put the $200 a month you save into an investment with a clean energy developer and/or clean energy ETFs/Indexes. We are relying way too much on billionaires and governments to slooooowly use our taxes to fix this mess instead of using that AND DIRECT BENEFIT METHODS to put some money back into our own pockets while putting our money where our mouths are.
