Great video! On the topic of creating a "tool" with GM, my Retro Pal Swapper Palette Builder tool was built in GMS1.4. It was... a struggle, and I don't ever want to add any more features to it :D. It works, but my next tool I'll be building in WPF for sure. But it was a great learning experience. And on the topic of scale: GM can handle the volume, it's up to you to keep your project organized and navigate-able. For example, the amazing Swords of Ditto, which was made in GMS1.4 has the following interesting stats: 1,900+ Scripts 14,000+ Sprites 600+ Objects 1,500+ Sounds 300,000+ Lines of Code GM can handle it. But can you?

Game maker allows you to work on the core design of a game rather than worry about the technicalities of how to get it on screen.
@prototrongames4 жыл бұрын
I started with Game Maker back in 2014 and got fairly good at it. I like old 8 & 16-Bit style games, so that's what I do. However, then I moved to some retro systems like the Amiga and the Amstrad CPC and I was completely lost, becasue I realised just how much Game Maker does for you. I had to start writing my own animation routines, pixel masking, X-Flipping, tile drawing, and scrolling routines - most of which at the bit level. Game Maker really holds your hand quite a lot, but it takes so much of the hassle out of development. That balance between creativity and technical drudge is very much in favour of the former, and I just love it! I've made shooters, action platform games, beat 'em ups, and a few other ideas, and Game Maker (although it still gives a few headaches) it's the best learning too I think I've ever used. I wish it had been available in schools when I was a boy.

Game Maker Studio 2 is a very powerful game engine but I think people just need to be realistic with their expectations, especially if they're a novice or are working alone to create games. My advice is to complete a good amount of tutorials that are built into the program, follow some KZbin series to go a bit more in-depth, read the official documentation AND THEN decide what sort of game you want to build for your first project. Once you've finished a few tutorials you'll know a bit more about what you personally are capable of building and how difficult even simple games are to create. With the knowledge from doing tutorials, you can hopefully create a manageable project that isn't too large in scope that you can feel proud of once you've accomplished building it :). I wish everyone luck! Just keep it simple when starting out. I don't recommend an RPG/MMORPG as your first project, perhaps a simple platformer or retro-inspired arcade game but it's really up to you.

Simplicity is the key. Whenever I see posts from people who have made their own engines, or post overly complex code on forums to problems that can be solved simply, or see people looking for masses of complex coding solutions instead of pulling back and scaling back or simplifying... their concepts, general design and ideas are lacking. There's no gimmicks. No hooks. I've realized the community likes being massively technically proficient, and a lot don't have a creative side. This is probably why so many of them can tell you multiple overly complex solutions to simple problems, but don't make good or enjoyable games when you actually play them. Some of the best and best selling and most beloved games made on game maker are simple games. Downwell, Undertale. Etc ..Left brain Vs right brain.

I dunno about "already known genre" unless you think every kind of 2d game possible has already been made. By being good for mechanics I don't mean typical game design or genre tropes like implementing "lives", I mean *logic* like collisions, movement, interactivity, rules, etc.

I made a physics simulator in GMS for one of my classes in Physics and to my surprise it went perfectly fine and the GMS language with it's functions and variables was perfect for it and it was fairly easy implementing all the basics although I had alot of headaches over getting collisions to not break. (Demonstrating Momentum, Friction and Velocity) I also made a Chess AI in GMS and that went less smoothy as in the fact i barely was able to make chess the game and the AI was garbage and took way to long to find a decision and there was a memory leak somewhere in my code (I never found it) that would occasionally cause an object to created forever causing massive FPS drops, the AI was completely hard coded with a decision tree meaning i needed to program a specific move for every possible decision, the GML language ran into limitation and it was not a jolly time for that project and I switched to C#. Unsurprisingly GMS was not made for anything outside of games although it can work well for other things.

I think I am currently making a “big game”. I have gotten relatively far, but I am pretty new to game development, so I dunno how far I can get before things start to fall apart. Its an open world sailing, game with a randomly generated world, and I had features in mind such as going, on land, colonization, competing empires, turn based land and naval combat, events, and other things that may be to ambitious. Right now though, if gamemaker can’t do it, I probably can’t either with my current skill level so I dunno. I can always cut out the more ambitious features, but I am just kinda working on it as a hobby on my spare time.

Funny thing, right after this video a team of just two people made an MMO in Game Maker 2 in a 48-hour game jam and the networking in it worked perfect. Should you make a 3D mmo? Perhaps not, but a 2D MMO? Very viable. Keep in mind, even Call of Duty today is called "MMO". MMO does not mean 1000 players on a server. Even when I played WoW back in the day, on the official server the playercount was under 20. Still an MMO. And this game jam game did the same thing as WoW did with the server I played on. Completely doable! You may have to use your computer as a server though or rent a machine for hosting your game's server, should you pursue this. But it worked better than the free solutions which exist in Unity.... So Game Maker did a 2D MMO better than Unity in this case. :D Yes you can!

I love using GameMaker Studio. I become more familiar with the software and I can make my games relatively easy. But the problem is some of my friends don't know about it. And when they see me using it. They think that it is just inferior just because it can't make 3D games (They're Unity users btw). And that's a pointless argument. Because I'm not that interested in 3D games (if I were. I'll use Unity in the first place). I love working on 2D games and I enjoy the process and that's what matters most to me 😊😊

What's your take on people that try to discredit and look down on others for using Game Maker? I am in love with using the engine, but I hate it when people try to say that "if you don't build your engine from scratch, then you aren't a game developer". Game Maker is amazing for indie games, not really AAA titles. However, many small games are great. I just have a question about the sprites. Are You creating them in built-in editor or some external tool?
@GoldScale575 жыл бұрын
With the level editor subject. Some of the reasons I've wanted to make my own level editor was because I wanted to be able to test and edit simultaneously. Also because I wanted to make an editor to construct a metroidvania-esque map of rooms in the same place that I edit the room itself. I can already that but I have to do it all "by hand" (with numbers). But I noticed (and assume I understand) your camera setup in Pokey Poke and decided I'd rather do that for the time being. Cause making tools is kinda fun but very, very, slow.
@GoldScale575 жыл бұрын
@rp Yes I've learned that in my travels of looking through the files and working out my own tools. However GML is my primary programming language because it the only one I've truly learned and practiced. But either way using a different language doesn't erase the time it takes to make my own tools to assist in my work.
@SaraSpalding5 жыл бұрын
It's (largely) a question of what would take more time. The tool and then making the levels using it, or just making your levels without the tool?
@GoldScale575 жыл бұрын
@@SaraSpalding Right. Short term, for the project I'm working on I'm gonna do it without the tool for now. But after releasing an early build of the game I'll work on the tool again as a more long term solution. With just the "map editing" portion at the very least.

It will be nearly impossible. To make a game there's much game logic that needs to be dealt with. Drag & drop would be less of a coding sort of thing. But you'd still be doing all the logic required to make the player move, deal with collisions such as not going through walls and floors, collecting coins and updating the score, etc. It's definitely worth a try.

As a veteran developer who is looking for a tool to create 2D games, the third point is spot-on. Unity seemed too focused on 3D and I didn't like how they want you to setup 2D games (Shaun mentioned this), but while GMS 2.3 has introduced many useful OOP concepts so you can structure your game logic better, but creating a data driven game in GMS looks very very painful.

What is GameMaker? An engine that allows you to create programs in the same way that VisualStudio does, has its own language and a library of functions for it. Its library of functions is specific to 2D, thanks to the community we have already begun to see alternatives for 2d / 3d editors. Certainly, even if you could create triple A worlds in 3d, the magnitude of such a project where hundreds of people normally participate would be unfeasible for indie developers. So owning a small 3d engine to make a game of the time of Nintendo 64 see something appetizing and a project that we can finish. Excelent video!👌👌👌👌
