WHAT Can You Do with a Behringer FCB1010 !

Hi there folks, put this vid together to demonstrate everything I have programmed my FCB1010 to do - which is loads !!!
This really is a very flexible piece of gear; whether it be for studio or live use, you can pretty much configure it to do whatever you want :-)

Yep, I got mine initially just to control Guitar Rig Pro and/or VST Amp Rack - but then somewhere along the line the penny dropped and the more I investigated the more I worked out what it could do with other gear 🙂

Amazing this video shred’s some light into what I want to achieve mostly want it to give me access to control the presets in different strymon fx pedals (Big Sky, Timeline,Mobius,Volante) each pedal can access about 300 presets; basically with a press up or down to navigate from 1 to 300. Do you have any idea how to even go about it? And how to control all those pedals by midi in serial ? Thank You for making this videos and the quick editing

Hi - don't have any Strymon pedals but having a quick look they appear to have pretty extensive midi implementation which means the FCB1010 can control them. I don't think you can program the FCB1010 to 'scroll' up and down through the presets, but you can get it to change to a specific preset when you press one of the footswitches on the FCB by using program change messages, which can be sent on different midi channels. For it all to work 'in serial' the pedals would also have to be connected via midi thru (not sure if they have a midi thru function that can be enabled, if not would need a midi thru box which I have a video on, on my channel). Basically FCB1010 to first pedal, then MIDI thru to second pedals, MID thru to third etc etc OR FCB1010 to a MIDI thru box and then out that box to all the MIDI ins on the pedals. Set the pedals all to different midi channels. Once all the MIDI connections in place you could program the FCB1010 presets however you want. There are 10 banks of 10 presents - allowing 100 presets. So for example you could program preset 1 on the FCB1010 to send 4 different PC messages on 4 different midi channels, telling each of the pedals to go to a specific preset and...as above you could have 100 combination like this. For each preset on the FCB1010 you could also have the 2 Expression pedals controlling some parameters related to the effects (again the expression pedals can be split to 2 different MIDI channels, so they could at least control something on 2 pedals simultaneously). The only other complication is that the strymon pedals have around 300 presets set in 3 banks (so they are numbered 1-100 x 3). If you wanted to send a program change message from the FCB1010 to choose preset 150, you would have to send a CC message to first change to the second bank and then the program change message for preset 50 - which would require two footswitch/presets to be taken up on the FCB1010. Things fast then get very complicated in remembering which presets in which bank on the FCB1010 are programmed to do what ! Not sure if all that helps, but the FCB1010 is pretty flexible in what you can get it to do, just not necessarily everything you might want it to do 🙂

I have it connected to a Thru box, that then goes out to all the synths and also to the midi in on my audio interface so it can talk with the PC (for VSTs and Cubase). Very nice channel you have created. My small start to recording was my Tascam 424 a Roland JV30 synth and an MMT8 💪. I still have it all but packed most away as I dabbled in VST synths way back when Computer Music released the Neon synth 🤣 I am primarily a guitarist and use software guitar amp software, I see th FCB1010 price dropped to 119$, do you recommend replacing the internal chip to Uno or the other one? Or keep it stock? It gets a bad rap for programming. Thank you for all this great info.

@@timothy5974 Hi and thanks. Tbh once you get your head round it, it’s actually very easy to program and can do so much. Programming with software editors is very straight forward, but even programming manually is ok - it just requires tons of button presses !! (There’s videos on both ways of programming on my channel). Mine has the stock chip and works fine for what I’m doing with it. Haven’t looked in to the custom chips too much but believe if using primarily for guitar they do have advantages like a proper ‘stomp box’ mode. I do actually use mine with a guitar and NI Guitar Rig 6 Pro and VST Amp Rack and it works fairly well. GR6 pro is a bit of a faff in settting up Macro buttons in it to operate what you want and then using the FCB1010 to trigger the macros. VST Amp Rack in Cubase is more straightforward using the Quick Controls in Cubase and mapping the FCB1010 to them. Hope that helps 🙂

Hi and thanks for some very helpful videos. Here is what I’m not sure of. If I have a midi keyboard connected to (for example) Scaler 2 and I have Scaler 2 set up to play a little arp when I press a key on the keyboard controller, as long as I hold the key down on the keyboard, the arp will continue to play. The keyboard is sending a note to Scaler. Now let’s say I replace the keyboard with the Behringer foot controller. If I press and hold one of the switches on the foot controller will the arp continue to play? And when I take my foot off of the switch on the foot controller will the arp stop? Thanks again.

Should work fine, the footswitches, when set to transmit Note Values, effectively act like a key on keyboard. When you press the footswitch it sends a Note On message and when you release it, it sends a Note Off message - so as long as you hold it, the note (or arp in this case) will continue to play and when you release it the arp will stop 🙂

@@krzysztofwaclawski9002 Hi - there’s a little more to it than just a sysex file for the fcb1010 as you need to set up and configure it all in the MIDI Remote manager in Cubase. I’ve done a short video on how to set it all up that you can find here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4bcYqJuqLirsKMsi=mYE6u5hNOefGAKB1 Basically you set the foot switches to send note values and then the foot pedals to respond to a couple of cc messages. Everything else is then configured in Cubase itself. It’s very simple to set up and doesn’t take too long at all. Hope that helps you 🙂 PS You can configure it to do loads of other stuff in Cubase if you want, for now I’ve just got it configured predominantly for the transport controls.

ok can you help???? I wanna trigger some buttons on my device they had different CC numbers. I am programming the FCB footswitch pedals but nothing seems to work. One of the million times that I have tried it the B expresion pedal seem to control a volume automation randomly. What am I missing??

Hi there, I’ll see if I can 🙂. One thing to check would be the global settings to make sure the CCs, Exp Pedals etc are set to the correct MIDI channel for the device you’re trying to trigger. Also, what are you trying to trigger, how is the FCB connected to it and are you programming the FCB with a software editor (highly recommend) or manually. If not seen them I’ve done a load of other videos on the FCB, which may help, that you can find in the ‘playlist’ section on my channel 🙂

Forget about programming on this thing, and use FCB BFF on the iPad. It’s a paid app, but damn I’d be completely lost without it. I can program PC and CC’s for each bank, assign the expression pedal etc.

I am wondering if this device can do what I need it to do. I am told that it will connect to a Boss Katana Mk2, which is what I have. The GA-FC footswitch for the Katana will allow you to turn on and off your various effects groups; Boost, Mod, FX, Delay, etc. But I cannot use it to turn on and off individual effects. If my Mod group is set to the chorus, I can turn that one and off. But I can't switch it to anything else in that group such as a phaser or flanger. Can this be done with the FCB1010? i.e. can one button be programmed to turn the chorus on and off, another to turn the phaser on and off, another to turn the wah expression pedal on and off, and another to turn one of the delays on and off? The problem with the GA-FC footswitch is that the mod effects button can only do the Mod effects group. I can't program another button to do the same group but a different effect. Can I do that with the FCB1010?

@@bretttrommler756 Hi, tbh I’m not familiar with guitar amps, but if it accepts midi commands then the FCB1010 should probably be capable of what you’re trying to do. I had a quick look and not sure if the katana has a midi input ?, if not then you would need some sort of midi-usb host for the fcb1010 to communicate with the katana. This could be through a pc/mac or a dedicated midi-usb converter. The fcb1010 has 10 banks of 10 presets (so you can effectively program 100 switches). Each of those 100 presets can send 5 program changes and 2 CC messages simultaneously as well as 1 Note Value. Also each preset can control 2 expression pedals (so again effectively 100 expression pedal combinations possible). I reckon that it would all work (there’s a few vids on KZbin showing people controlling such amps with an fcb1010), but as I’m not really familiar with the amps I can’t really offer much more help. @@splootyvision well the problem I'm running into is that the Katana effects control is divided into several groups. Boosters, Mods, FX, Delay and Reverb. From what I can tell, these groups cannot be changed. See, I don't use any of the boosters in the Katana, but I do want to use the other stuff; chorus, flanger, Phaser, delays, pedal stuff. I want to use one button to do one primary job... turn one certain effect on and off. But they have it so the button one has to be boosters, which I don't use, button two is Mod stuff... Chorus, Phaser, flanger.... button three is Fx... tremolo, vibrato, pedal effects. Button four is delays, five is reverb. There is a nifty USB device a friend told me about called an Airstep Kat, made specifically for the Katana. You can actually use the buttons to switch between different effects in one group. So I could use one button to turn the Mod group on and off, and long press it to switch from chorus to phaser to flanger. But it is still limited to the existing groups, i.e. button one would still be the booster group and useless to me. Anyway, I've rambled enough. Thanks for the info.

@@bretttrommler756 Hi there - The Katana midi implementation looks pretty extensive and I think you could probably do a lot with an FCB1010. If you don’t have it here is the midi implementation chart; www.primovasound.com/pdf/MIDX_20_KatanaMKIIV1.pdf You could use a separate bank on the FCB (there are 10 banks) for each of the ‘groups’ e.g. Amplifier, Booster, Delay 1, Delay 2 etc etc. Each bank would then have 10 foot switches and 2 expression pedals available. So for example if you take the Delay group you could in one of the banks on the fcb1010, set the switches and foot pedals as: Switch 1 cc#19, value 0 Switch 2 cc#19, value 64 These switches would turn the delay on and off. Then you could program the other 8 foot switches for different delays: Switch 3 cc#80 value 0 = digital Switch 4 cc#80 value 1 = pan Switch 5 cc#80 value 2 = stereo Etc, etc. And then for each footswitch you could set the expression pedals to control say the Delay Level (cc81 min value 0, max value 127) and the Delay Time (cc82, min value 0, min value 127) You could then repeat this for other function groups. In each bank on the FCB1010 you would then be able to turn a specific group on or off and then be able to choose 8 options within that group (e.g 8 different reverbs) and use the expression pedals to control 2 parameters related to that effect (level, time, feedback etc etc). For groups where you want more than 8 effects to choose from you could spread this across 2 banks on the FCB1010. Just a few musings from myself, as you got me interested and I love a good problem to solve. Hope it helps and doesn’t confuse things any further. PS This way you could program whatever bank you want on the FCB1010 to whatever group you want on the Katana. You could ignore the boosters if you don’t use it and have Bank 1 as Delays, Bank 2 Delay 2, Bank 3 Reverbs etc - in fact you could set them up in whatever order you want them 🙂

@splootyvision well see, that's the main thing I want to do. I have the Roland GA-FC footswitch, and I could almost be happy with just that if I could program each button to the groups I want instead of the pre-made groups. Being able to set up my own effect groups would be a big plus.

I actually connect the FCB1010 to the midi ports on my audio interface (Behringer UMC404HD) which acts as a MIDI interface to the computer. I have the MIDI out of the interface connected to the MIDI in on the FCB1010. And then the MIDI out from the FCB1010 goes to a MIDI 'Y' splitter cable which goes to both the MIDI in on the audio interface and the in on a MIDI merge box (which then runs to a thru box and on to all the other gear). This allows me to communicate with the PC for editing the FCB1010 using software editors (and also control VSTs), but also allows me to communicate with and control my hardware. Not sure what adapters been using, but any MIDI interface box should do the trick though. Hope that helps :-)

I don't have any hardware to control with the pedal board so connecting it directly to X32 hopefully will solve my problem. Thanks a lot! :)

Can I use the FCB1010 as a sustain pedal?

Yep, you certainly can. You can program one of the expression pedals to MIDI CC 64 (which is the standard CC number for sustain) and set the min/max values to 0 and 127. The expression pedal then works like a rocker switch, rock it forward and the sustain activates, rock it back and the sustain is released. This also means that you can actually rock it forward, then take your foot off and the sustain will hold (unlike a normal sustain pedal where you need to keep it pushed down to maintain the sustain). You could also, depending on preference, program 2 of the footswitches - one to turn sustain on and one to turn sustain off (but this isn't as natural feeling as using the expression pedal). @@pfrocha Hi as I mentioned, as far as I am aware , the only way to do it with the footswitches is to program one switch to turn sustain on and another switch to release it. CC values 63 or less are for sustain off and values 64 or above are for sustain off. So you could program one switch with CC number 64, value 0 and then one switch with CC number 64, value 127. This would work, but using the expression pedal is much more natural feeling - similar to a standard sustain pedal. If you use a footswitch you are constantly toggling between two switches, dependant on how you're playing the sustain. Cheers 🙂

@@pfrocha Don't forget you can set the expression pedals for each preset/bank. So for example you could set bank1 up so the pedals do expression and volume for each of the 10 presets, bank 2 you could have expression and sustain, bank 3 sustain and volume. You'd always be limited to 2 at any one time, but the combinations could be different 🙂

Hi there, yep that's possible. You can start and stop playback of patterns using the assignable footswitch functionality on the MODX8, coupled with the FCB1010. Go into Utility -> MIDI I/O on the MODX and you'll see a box called 'FS Assign', select it and then use the dial to change it to 'Play/Stop' Connect the 'Assignable' foot switch port on the back of the MODX (next to the sustain) to 'Footswitch 1' on the back of the FCB1010 (standard jack to jack audio cable). On the FCB1010, enable 'Relay Switch 1' for a specific preset. For example I have mine set up so that footswitch 10 on the FCB1010 triggers the 'assignable footswitch' on the MODX (which I then have configured in the MODX to turn the Arpeggiator on and off). You can then program footswitches 1-8 on the FCB1010 to move between the 8 scenes, assuming your chaining patterns together for a complete song ? This previous video I did walks through the whole process of setting it up, the only difference would be on the MODX choosing 'play/stop' instead of 'Arp' when configuring everything. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqmagp55eL6mpcksi=Tg_ANqwO7z-DDlCD Tbh not an expert on the patterns/songs/performance recorder bit in the MODX as mostly do that in my DAW, but believe the above is hopefully what trying to achieve ?. If of course all you want to do is just hit the play button with your feet and don't need to move between scenes you could just hook a standard switch pedal to the jack on the back of the MODX and configure it to start and stop playback as above). @@michaelneal900 Not that I’ve experienced, but then it is sitting on carpet so that compensates for any slight alignment imperfections. If it’s on a hard surface and slightly off kilter, a small adhesive pad or something like that under the offending corner would stop it rocking 🙂
