Andrew Coster will be a hard act to follow. An intelligent, compassionate man who clearly understands that solutions are not black and white and that unless we address the root causes of violence, poverty, alienation and hopelessness policing will forever remain as the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff.

Around 11 minutes in he is saying, “ it is complex”. And it is, it requires a media to take these complex problems and fact check and contextualise. Ultimately our media lets us down in not doing its job, and we are left everywhere with non factual or partially factual , non contextual information that leaves a society unable to debate our problems. Media again and again has failed its job, its job! It’s responsibility as the fourth estate. Not to give us news or entertainment but to do its jog of fact checking and contextualising , at , a , minimum!!

I agree that the media is part of the problem, but its not completely their fault. Ultimately media providers need to pay the bills, and unfortunately the current ecosystem incentivizes sub par content. We need to get to the root of the issue, which is complicated and involves things like more investment in education, media, a perspective shift on tech business models and how the internet content is funded, preventing monopolies such as meta/google etc. and many more things. Its easy to use the media as a scapegoat, but it isn't so black and white

Dangerous times when police are now being directed by politics and no longer impartial. Same thing happened in London when Cressida Dick had to stand down, now look how bad policing is there now.
@philip88154

Police have never been and can never be politically 'impartial'. After all, how they operate and what they do impacts peoples and communities significantly which makes their conduct inherently political. People tend to call impartial whatever political opinions they tend to agree with. It's dangerous when this happens because it means they see their opinion as some higher truth, rather than a political opinion which deserves constant reappraisal and questioning

They let him keep everything I owned because I couldn't "prove" the special edition ps2 (one of only 3 they made in the world as a competition prize) wasn't one he also won. Also have a friend who was run over. They showed up 2 hours later and didn't even look for the guy or ask for the cctv footage. Agree with you too, I am not saying media is the whole problem and wholeheartedly agree that a good democracy will fail without an educated public. But media is a huge part of the problem, I understand your problems in that space, but it becomes circular if we all grumble the problem and don’t take action. Media is a massive pillar in democracy. Just simply fact checking and contextualising would mitigate huge issues around debate in both the public and our elected officials. Each group can bemoan the issues. I say that media individuals need to appreciate and value their job and go over and over this, as all true professionals and passionate humanitarians do if the value what they do. I fail , sorry, to accept the excuses. I see them, I understand, some, but not all of them . But still I call media to action.

My personal experience of dealing with police has been positive, but my overall view of policing is that there are too many unprosecuted crimes now which leads kiwis to believe that crims are able to operate at a level where they get away with crime more often in the past. I understand that the police are underfunded, but I wonder if it is now time to fully reexamine the structure of policing and how there could be a more effective way to coordinate crime prevention, not just turn up in car if the crime is serious enough. Part of the problem may be that police are too protective of their own organisation, numbers could cost effectively be increased if they had a similar system to special constables in the UK who could take up the slack for some basic patrolling, sports events etc. No expert here though, I just think that there needs to be questions raised about the perceived failure of the current system, and a feeling of lawlessness in NZ.

No matter their up bringing or family life ITS A BAD CIRCLE of nothing but crap excuses.... no one should blame any one or situation on THEIR yes ,yes , their choices, excuses like 'my home life made me like this!' what crap... PEOPLE SHOULD yes , everyone is responsible for their own choices and adults getting youths to do their crime because they are youth so won't go jail bad pressure on youths tragic news!! We all know t MANY people had a hard up bringing or having tough time ect.. facts THEY DO NOT GO OFF THE RAILS & not decide to act cruel, harmful even dangerous in the community or do serious crime push their kids to follow in their crime bad, bully life NOT COOL to act up at all no excuses! tragic excuses even can be heart braking for some people involved, & sad too ( 18+ they made their choice and did wrong choice broke NZ law brought it on by their own choice !!!! or their kids witness their parents family bad, bad choices of such a horrible bad acts of crime bring harm to others, so what is that showing the younger generation !!!! just scary do crime pay the time harden up NZ legal system so people who do crime do not want to return to jail as so many people return NZ gov harden up NZ jails

What causes crime? Is the title. It’s quite simple, bad people doing what comes naturally to them. The majority of people we call impoverished are not criminals and conversely rich people also commit crimes. He ignored the Phillipines as a model for dealing crime lol. Sweden and the Nordic countries, well crimes gone up as far as I am aware. Especially sexual crimes against women.

Placing pedestrian and cyclists safety on the drivers is not on and contrary to the road code, is this guy so thick he cannot read, We now have people running on the wrong side of the road, two abreast at times and think they can, this clown has created entitlement, look at people at supermarkets, walk where they like while I am looking of a park, get hit,their fault.Same with cyclists, use your eyes and brains, your safety is your problem.
