Very useful and educational!! Thank you! Now I know what a burn actually is and how to deal with it. Yes, I burned my lawn (Bermuda) a few days ago-right at the spot where I was loading 32-0-0 into the spreader. Ugh!! I get the need to water if there is a suspected over-application (which I missed), but I have a question: If water, water, water dilutes the salt and forces it down, what does all that water do to the nutrients in the fertilizer?

Well done Mrs Scientist! I played myself, I applied Scotts "GreenMax" 5 years ago and it worked GREAT! my lawn was so green and flawless. Having such great results last time I decided to use it again this past weekend. Lets just say I got knocked out in round 2. I now have 3 large yellow burn marks in my lawn. After watching your video I think I got a lil trigger happy and over applied. Because we (Kansas) had 2 weeks of heavy rain I did not water in immediately. I quickly noticed the ground had dried up like a desert. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom and I hope to have better results next time.

I found your video looking for “burnt lawn”, but in my case it’s not fertilizer… I live down south (Reno, NV) and last week I put a small inflatable pool for my one year old grandkid on the lawn. He played in it for a while, we then emptied the pool and went inside. We forgot to take down the pool, the day was very hot (around 100F) and the plastic sheet on the grass created a kind of an oven. When I remembered about it, late in the evening, I went to fold the pool and I found that the grass underneath has become completely brown like burnt by fire all the way to the roots. It has been a week, I have been watering it, but no signs to come back. Any suggestion??? Thanks in advance…

Actually, it is the best videos about fertalizer burn, hands down. I have a minor in chemistry and I completely understood what you were saying. When someone says fetalizer burn, you don't really know what what that is. But when you understand it concerning osmosis then all the fear is taken away. You will understand how to combat overfertalzation. All you have to do is dilute the water in the lawn so the salt doesn't pull the water from the grass. I think what you are saying is that the water around the grass is too hypertonic and all you need to do is dilute the water. Boom! Great video!

I put some grape seedlings into pots, but added some manure (called "veggie mix" by my nursery) into the pots part of the grape roots. I'm suspecting that there was too much manure in the mix, which caused the grape seedlings' leaves to burn over a period of about 6-7 days. Half the leaves of the grapes' leaves seemed to burn off. Is there any way to recover these seedlings? Will water wash be the solution? Or should I maybe transplant them into fresh pots with a sandier mix?

Thanks! I’ve used Alum both in solid and diluted form for faster absorption and also vinegar diluted. It lowered the PH from above 7,50 (8 even) to just below 7 but went back up the next day. I believe something is buffering it. I think in my case it was not properly decomposed cow manure, my guess, which I was told when buying it that it was 2 years old. Typically speaking no that’s not the case. The exception would be if the grass was under water but even then that would have to be for weeks before there is a major issue.
