I just turned 71. Gaming really changes when you get above 50/60. My reflexes are in slow motion mode but I still have fun.. I do more collecting than playing now and was sidelined last year due to progression of my Parkinson’s Disease. In September I had brain surgery that dramatically reduced my hand tremors. I can handle a joy stick again! My point is that there will always be obstacles to pursuing our gaming needs. Enjoy trashing your friends while you’re young and never give up. I really enjoy this channel and you inspire me to keep hacking away no matter the challenge. Enjoy your gaming youngsters😊

My tastes have not changed at all. The industry changed. Microprose and Novalogic with those big military manuals, keyboard overlays…wow! Kids today won’t sit still and play those but they were (and still are) very immersive. Gunship 2000, M1 Tank Platoon, Comanche, Armored Fist. I still play them all but I’m in my late 50s now not late 30s. I can only play about 20 minutes at a time nowadays but that’s ok.

Ditto. Way way back I was immediately captivated with the Atari 2600 and was hard core until my mid 30s, 50 now, I struggle to remain captivated for more than an hour or two at best. More pick and play now, more old classics, if its too complex or exceedingly difficult I just cant be bothered. Guilt also nags me to instead spend more time with my wife and also my complex artistic endeavours, fine wood working and sculpture etc.

I'll be 54 next month. Started gaming in arcades & on the 2600. btw, the Atari 2600 had no pause button and I played it til my butt literally got numb. All these years, still not much of a console fan. I was always desktop, starting with C64 & Amiga. I've always had poor reflexes and hand-eye, so I have gravitated to more casual & strategic games than fast action. I have been a city sim fan since it started with sim city. Civilization was a good franchise til Civ 6 got lame and cartoony for kids. My habits haven't' changed much. I have carpal & ergonomic injury so I can't play stuff requiring too much continuous mouse & keyboard use, but I still play when I can and take a break when I hurt. I do get annoyed sometimes at too many games pandering to juvenile tastes though. So many cute cartoony things out there, makes me feel sick. But I'm old enough to be the parent of most devs these days.

Yall missed the biggest part of what I thought this video would be about: getting older and not being able to play certain games at all. Arthritis, life responsibilities, family, if the avg gamer is 40 and ppl set aside having a kid well a lot of ppl are about to come to a halt in gaming once they pair up IRL finally (plus) in another 10-20yrs you’re gonna have arthritis or other pain and simply won’t be able to play every game genre anymore. It’s gonna happen man we gotta get to those backlogs now or we never will.

Nah bro you’re just busy. That’s why you play pick up and play. I am also 30. My 20’s were basically all school and work. I finished it, and took a year off. I used to think I fell off gaming, couldn’t stay focus and fell asleep. But in that free year I can confirm hard asf I was wrong. What it was is I was so busy I couldn’t have time to enjoy it, not because ei fell out of gaming. Tbh it felt weird at first lmao n guilty. 8 years of constant work and I started my education later on thsn my peers so 21… I played quick games like mk, F13, rocket league. Like I just got my first ufc and wwe game after over 10 years and that was lit I sunk 270 hours into just wwe 2k23. Then I got sonic frontiers cuz I loved sonic when I was young. Pretty lit. I did KH3 finally. Basically time. As far as reflexes I feel the same if not better, BUT I’m not as competitive or hot headed, like I’ll still smash someone like Battlefront 2 I got into that hard too, and got good but I wasn’t trying to be good if that makes sense. Good enough for ppl to message me lmao like bro idc I’m having fun. Did the tomb raiders and re played old games. You’re right on that gaming has changed there’s definally more trash n less good games the whole online live service thing n games being always broken is really annoying.

Idk, depends on the game I guess, played Resident Evil 4 on the Wii again recently after not touching it for a couple years and it scared the living hell out of me. If you don't aim your shots correctly or are low on ammo it's truly a battle for survival and there is no easy mode. On the other hand I replayed Fallout 4 and was bored within 4 hours. I think that as you get older the games have to be more and more engaging to keep your interest. When I was in my teens and twenties I could get into just about any game but after playing countless games over the years the experience has to be unique or I just turn it off. Played the new Spider Man game as well and found it to be an awful experience and it just felt like the Arkham games from over a decade ago but with an idiotic story and more fetch-quest elements. Red Dead Redemption 2 was solid though, that's a very good game and well designed. It reminded me of The Witcher 3 in regards to it's quality. I think the problem with modern gaming as that AAA titles are few and far between and over half of them flop like Starfield for instance, over 7 years in development from the same studio that released excellent games like Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, and Fallout 3 that are extremely open for modding so you can tailor the experience to your own wants and remove the aspects you dislike. Fallout 76 and Starfield felt bland and soulless, I gave both of them a shot and was let down. For every Red Dead Redemption 2 there are ten Starfield's because AAA developers are not willing to take chances and most just go with the Ubisoft formula because it's easy and sells well enough that they'll make a profit despite the games being mediocre. Why bother releasing a masterpiece like Baldur's Gate 3 when you can just do the bare minimum and ship it? It's not like there is much competition these days as most developers have been absorbed by larger ones and just taking into account the extremely lackluster PS5 games catalogue and minimal amount of exclusives gamers that are starving for new titles to play on their overpriced console will buy them anyways and deal with the lack of quality. I mean, compare reviews for games on Steam to those on the Playstation store or Xbox marketplace, on the consoles the mediocre or bad games get much higher aggregated scores than on Steam while the masterpieces score highly on Steam. This is because PC gamers have decades of games available to them, much of which has mods or unofficial patches to fix them after the developers abandoned them. I remember being a teenager and getting a PS2, within 3 years that console had an insanely diverse and high quality library, within 3 years the PS5 is like a barren wasteland of mediocre titles with a handful of good ones.

I grew up loving JRPGs as a kid. The only genre i really ever played besides survival horror games. I turned 30 in December and can hardly stand to sit through an hour of one of them. I dont think its a lack of time but i think i have just outgrown the general tropes presented in these games. Especially in modern jrpgs. The main characters and their party members always seem to be younger and still in school. I just dont relate to that stuff anymore. They also feel like they dont respect the players time. Heck this could be said for a lot of big games nowadays. Its feels more like quantity over quality. Thankfully there are decades of video games i still havent touched. So i have no problems keeping busy.

Keep in mind, there are trends in gaming, just like they are in music and movies, and some of them just don't suit your tastes. It doesn't mean it will stay that way forever. As an example. I'm sick of comic book/super hero movies that have dominated the Summer movie "blockbusters" for the last 2 decades. I'm not interested. Wake me when that trend is over, I might go see a movie again. Simpler, Indie games are on the rise, maybe you will find something you like again that doesn't feel like a part time job.

Good chat and very relatable. Im now 31 and can think of dozens of different pockets of time where my interests have changed. From back in the late 90s/early 00s playing my GB colour, to the PS1, PS2, then the casual Wii days, obviously the 360 era was the ultimate online shooter and western RPG time, now I find myself having very little time so MMOs suit my lifestyle as I don't need to immerse myself into stories, I can just chip away a little bit at a time every now and then. I miss being younger and the magic that games had back then, but I know that's mostly nostalgia.

Racing games are my jam, have always been. What has changed for me over time is that I like sim-racing more now than I did in the past. I mean, I liked both arcade-style games and simulation games alike but I have never been a competitive guy and I'm a slow learner when it comes to anything simulation. About two years ago, I saw a Logitech G29 racing wheel for a nice discount and I thought it was a good opportunity to get into sim-racing. As I mentioned, I am taking it slowly because this genre is like a new world to me and I tend to make mistakes very easily. Nevertheless, it's been quite a fun ride. Thanks for the video, guys!

Battlefield Bad Company 2 was the absolute best at that time. That was when they came out with destructable enviros, a good party with a good sniper made that game a blast. Modern Warfare ruined the whole shooter with the idiots that did the spawn kills. You aint a bad ass if you wait for someone to spawn and shoot em in the back of the head.

I really wasn't the intended audience. Not dumping on Pokémon, I like SMT and Persona, I was just too old for Pokémon. I just viewed it as a JRPG for a younger crowd.

Man, we're in lockstep. I was born in 85 so my bread and butter was the NES. I dabbled in RPGs but they never really grabbed me until high school when a friend of mine convinced me to try Pokemon which was my gateway into the genre. From there I got into FFVII and then FFX. Of course my love for the N64 wrestling games in high school was everything to me. Like you I got really into Madden. Senior year in HS is when Xbox Live came out and I dove right in with Rainbow Six 3, the Madden Games and eventually NFL 2K5 when I was in college. Very similar path as you.

I've been a gamer for close to 35 years now. I was a Sega kid back in 91, and the ps1 was my last console (not counting the Switch). Then I switched to PC gaming and I really enjoy the tinkering. Now that I'm in my 40s, I'm all about slow, semi realistic or full on sim open world PC gaming and messing about with high end gaming hardware. I like to be able to graphically push those big, sprawling worlds to just walk around in and enjoy both the artistry and technical prowess these games require. Anything super linear, I've really no interest in anymore. I do like to play 'indie' titles on my Switch as well. Since 2020 I really got back into retro gaming, mainly 16 bit and 8 bit emulation stuff on pc, retro mini consoles and emulation handhelds. Recently I've also set my mind to rescuing as many Mega Drives from certain doom as I can. I've been gaming a lot less lately (owning a business will do that for ya), but still, even at work we'll have gaming afternoons and have us some good old off the grid gaming sessions 😊

As I get older, I find myself enjoying simple one-screen arcade games a lot. Many of them you can play with just one hand casually, simple D-pad movement with an action button. Table games are similar -- mahjong, shogi, shanghai, chess, poker, etc. When I'm at my laziest or I'm tired, I like to find games that have a demo mode so I can sit and watch two CPUs fight it out. These are usually fighting games, turn-based strategy, sports and wrestling. I also play a ton of shmups nowadays, but I suspect those will become more difficult as age really sets in.

I've found as I've gotten older I don't care as much for competitive gaming. I find myself playing a lot more single player or cooperative games that are story driven. Survival horror is still my bread and butter. I like games where you can progress through a story versus multiplayer games, my skills in multiplayer have diminished quite a bit since High School. I don't have the time that I used to between work and having a kid so it's tougher to just hop on to an online match and have any kind of success. It's more rewarding to play something together, than it is playing against another person. I still like competition here and there, for sure, but it's less of a focus for me nowadays. It's interesting how our tastes change as we get older. I can't wait til my little dude is old enough to play though, I am so excited to share this hobby with him.

We play more Co-op / multiplayer / party games now with family and friends. I still power through linear level, hack-n-slash, and metroid-vanias such as Halo 3, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, and The Messenger. I'm an older gamer (44) who used to be really into RPGs, especially SNES ones (FF2, FF3, CT, SoM & Zelda aLttP in particular). This continued into the PS1/N64 days. I was also a pc gamer who loved sierra and lucas arts adventure games and later RTS games like C&C, Warcraft, Starcraft and RPGs like Diablo and Baldur's Gate. In college I got more into shooters starting with Golden Eye and later Halo when Xbox came out. After college I started playing FFXI which introduced me to MMOs, I played the hell out of that game until WoW came out in 2004 and for years I poured tons of my free time into that game until about 2009. I probably have thousands of hours of play time in WoW, definitely the game i put the most time into. I still played the occoasional Halo, Zelda, GTA and maybe a few other games during that period, but didn't have much time for any other game than WoW in those years. I did play Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim when they first came out but always found myself messing around more with the mods than playing the actual games. I turned 30 in 2009 and realized I was spending way too much time gaming and not enough time focusing on my career and life goals so I quit WoW. Nevertheless, curiosity got the better of me and I tried a few other MMOs (Guild Wars, Elder Scrolls Online, Black Desert) but found that I just couldn't get into them. In fact, I found I didn't have the patience for most story driven games anymore even though it used to be my favorite genre. Other than RDR, GTA and Zelda the only games I would play during this period were multiplayer shooters that I could play with my cousins. Namely Overwatch, CoD, Battlefield, Fortnite, Destiny, Hell Divers, etc. But when covid hit I got back into gaming hard. I was hooked on completing gamepass quests and would always try and get my daily achievement for the day on xbox. I could perpetually pay for gamepass using the points I earned and even buy a few games with those points. Those quests got me into playing a lot of different games I never would have otherwise played. A lot of great indy games like What Remains of Edith Finch, I am Fish, The Untitled Goose Game, 12 minutes, Inside, Tangled, Spiritfarer, the list goes on and on (I played a a lot of games during covid). This got me back into more story driven games and I even played some older games I missed (Mass Effect, the Bioshock games, the witcher 3 to name a few), But when Elden Ring came out that became my new obsession. I poured 360 hours into that game. Probably the game I put the most time into since WoW. I put nearly as much time into ToTK when it came out but by this point I realized I needed to step away from gaming so didn't 100% it. You see I had gained a lot of weight during this period and I decided to re-direct my gamepass quest obssession into something healthier, like closing my fitness rings on my apple watch. I started playing skyrim again on VR, but only because I can track it as a workout on my watch and close my rings. I may actually finally beat this game since it's part of my daily exercise routine. I still play Elden Ring from time to time because I want to get all the endings before the expansion comes out and it's a great game to play while listening to a podcast or having youtube on in the background, but I find that I spend very little time sitting in a chair playing games nowadays. There's still a lot of games I want to play but I don't have the time for them for this reason. For example, I bought BG3 last autumn but I'm not sure I'll ever beat it. I love the game, but find it too be a bit too demanding of my time and attention and I would rather focus on physical activities instead of sedentary ones. As for multiplayer games lately I've been playing Hell Divers 2 with my cousins. That's a great pick up and play game that I try to make time for if only to still keep in touch with my cousins.

Dreamcast had a lot of 4p games. Many people were drawn to games that they otherwise would not have played, like Tennis.

Lol, been playing video games since tape drives and typing in code from magazines. So 40+ years or so. Played mostly on computers, starting with the Tandy TRS80 Model III, the Apple IIe, the TI 99/4A. Went to university to play on XT/AT pcs, my first Hercules graphics cards (hgcibm/e) and eventually full VGA. Been a wild ride. Still have more games than productivity software. My CS1.6 skills have steadily improved over the 2 decades, and my reflexes are still full twitch. I have programmed, I have worked in IT travelling around the US, worked in several computer shops over the years. I was born to compute. Never became a car guy, a sports guy, a hunting/fishing guy, never had the time.

I find myself and going back and playing older games. They just bring me back. I love going back and popping in the original gears games, or halo 1-3. For sports I whip out the old ps2. I put in my PES games or play NBA/FIFA street. The classic maddens and MVP baseballs still hold up on ps2 too.

You guys made some great points. Especially the time factor. If you stop playing for a week or more the controls become foreign when returning to it. I’ve been playing since ‘87. I still love many of those old NES, SNES, PS1 games. Yes, you should pick up Final Fantasy VII again. I’m playing through it for the first time since 1999. Oh the memories. All that being said, you should be drinking *only MALT LIQUOR and/or Ballantine ALE on camera. So run down to your local cut-rate and get you a 40oz of delicious and refreshing MALT LIQUOR.

Early 60's gamer here. Your interests do change. I don't care about "beating" a game. Been there, done that, bought the collector's edition helmet. Mainly I like to see what a game has to offer, is it telling a good story, are there interesting challenges to overcome? What is the discovery process for progressing through the game, does the game have more to offer in being "challenging" than throwing a mess of bad guys at you and giving you crappy weapons (anyone can do that)? And we also don't care to much about in game collectibles, micro transactions, achievements, and that type of rot. We've figured out that's just a space filling money grab.

As a gamer in my 30s, I am still gaming because of recording gameplay on my channel(s) for entertainment purposes to anyone willing to follow my work here on KZbin. Plus, online gaming tournaments can help make some money for myself as well that I have been doing since 2022 of Z League. Good video.

Same here. I used to play a lot of RPGs. I just don't have the time anymore. I preaches take dedicated uninterrupted time. If you have a family uninterrupted is really difficult to achieve.

The steam deck really revived my gaming time. Playing persona 5 on breaks at work and in the car when running errands.

Born in 89. I’ve seen a lot of the gaming landscape change throughout my lifetime. I played both the NES and SNES first. How it used to be scrollers to a bunch of top down views. When PlayStation and N64 came around, just seeing that leap to 3D and everything was going 3D, that kind of stayed like that since. Now I see games attempting to be like NES and SNES games, side scrollers are popular again, which is all good, which brings that nice balance of the old and new. But I used to be into FPS games and fell out of playing them only for a very limited ones I like are the Metroid Prime games and the Doom games.

What I have noticed as I have gotten older. The older you get the more hated you are for defeating younger people in fighting games. Anime fanatics are awful people, dont you dare have an unpopular opinion around younger gamers. As an older gamer you will be made fun of for being old.

As a kid I was all about realistic shooters or simulation racing games . The new forza actually made me realize I have changed as a gamer . I have a blast just mobbing around on forza horizon and really dislike the lack of customization on sim racing games compared to nfs or horizon . And now I’ve opened up where I just like shooters in general , starfield or fallout you name it in just valuing my gaming time and don’t wanna waste it doing laps and laps on a endurance race

Certainly as a gamer, or anything you undertake, where you begin as a beginner will be different than later when you know more, refine your tastes, etc. At the beginning, you are trying everything, learning. After some time and experience, you determine what you like, and what you don't. That's with anything. I know over the years, I have become more sensitive in gaming about design and mechanics that seem like they don't respect my time, so I no longer mess with MMOs that much, or any other game, that uses an artificially slow grind to pad its content. I've also learned the difference between challenge, and tedium, which far too many games don't seem to distinguish. I have come to sense difficulty derived from legitimately challenging content, vs cheap difficulty or time wasting. These things help me determine faster which games will be worth my time, and which will not. We all learn, and once we become experienced, we learn as much if not more about what we do not like and won't tolerate, as that which we do.

I don't have hours to play this long 80 hour games nor do I have any desire to engage in PVP. I started getting into more Roguelikes/lites because I can solo play for 30 minutes then get back to whatever important task I was procrastinating

At 44 Im into single player RPG Fallout series, Skyrim, now Im knee deep in No Mans Sky. I did the online FPS with Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Halo series, and COD Black ops. Im not burnt out but the online gaming thing got kinda toxic and micro transactions killed any drive I had to play those kinda games. NMS has an amazing online experience because you still in a single player feel but you have these little community moments during expeditions, I also dont have the feeling of having to keep up with other players, I can put it down for a few days and get back to it like nothing happened. Gaming had changed so much some for good and bad, but finding something that brings you back it always a great feeling,
