It’s quite low stress now ever since they increased the bore size, whilst maintaining sidewall thickness, it’s a slightly bigger engine. I’m pretty sure it’s able to take more abuse, much like how the K24 was the most adored Frankenstein for building power. Not too keen on the new WRX tho.

"Abuse" = key word. A person can have fun with a car without "abusing" it. If "abusing" is what most people are doing who then bitch on the websites, comment sections, etc. then it invalidates virtually every complaint, including warranty coverage. If you've been around a while, you know modding under warrant is a big roll of the dice, for example. Years ago, smart guys bought used cars, saved a ton of cash, and being beyond warranty nothing really mattered. Additionally, back then - i'm talking late 80's into the 90's, in the Mustang/Camaro crowd - I never heard anyone gripe about parts being shit and pissing on the dealers. They all took ownership of the abuse they dished out and chalked it all up to that. It simply wasn't worth arguing a blown diff on a supercharged 5.0 was due to a shitty diff from Ford. But things changed, and part of it is the age level has dropped way down. The owners of the $30,000 - $60,000 (MSRP to modded costs) has dropped significantly. Proof? I can drive through my kid's high school parking lot. Even in my personally small pool of families I know with boys there's two that received STI's for graduation. My kid got a Sonic, will get enough money to get him through school, along with a nice laptop. (And those other families? They're not all any significant amount higher incomes - they just want to be sure their kid has street cred, apparently. They will trash those cars, and be on NASIOC and iWSTI bitching about the dealer not covering their crappy transmissions, head gaskets, ringlands, syncros, etc.

Damn I learned a lot, great video. Just ordered my 2022 WRX yesterday. Went with the base model (added short throw shifter, couple of small things). Wanted no frills, light as possible stock, will take it to COBB later this year. I have a 2021 Ascent, and just love the thing (tows my boat like a beast, everyone loves the ride etc.), but missed my 2014 WRX badly. So for the first time, I'll have two "new" Subarus (my Ascent has 5,800 miles on it, lol). Test drove the 2022 yesterday, without reading ANYTHING about it online (I prefer less to have a less diluted opinion on things). Came to the conclusion that the new WRX was refined, in almost every single way. Refined to the point of not having any loveable "rough edges" and that's a good and bad thing depending on your perspective. This will be the first time I tune a Subaru where I'm not worried about pushing the motor too hard, I expect to get it to about 350/300 with Cobb, I don't go too crazy there, just want a bit more bump. Should have it in about 8 weeks time.

@franciscodelvalle17612 жыл бұрын
A note to add. The difference in boost/power from 10-12 lbs on the FA24 and 21 lbs on the FA20 is due to the compression ratio of the engines. The FA24 is a "high" compression engine at 12.5:1 vs the FA20 at 10.6:1. This is why you need less lbs to make the same or more power. This will be a good thing as the higher compression will provide good power at low RPMS, which is where most turbo engines lack power.
@HelycopterEP Жыл бұрын
That’s the FA24D in the brz you’re referencing. The FA24 in the wrx has 10.6:1. It has less boost because the engine displacement is larger already. So less boost is required to achieve the same power as the outgoing engine.

I know this isn't about looks, LOL...but it can never be avoided. Having now seen one in person, the best thing I can compare it to is my own 2011 STI. I did not believe this generation looked good based on photos, but will never forget going to the movies and seeing one in person - red, and the sedan and spoiler was back, baby - and it's curves, it's hips, stance, all of it, looked great. Numerous modern cars are impossible to appreciate based on photos because their design elements are so complex versus many years ago. And one huge thing - Subaru photographers need to be replaced. The nose on the 2022 looks awful in many photos, all pointed and sticking out too far. Then look at it in profile and it's not like that at all. It's a trick of the paint/grille/black lower fascia. In person, you have to work to get into that position and see this. And that rear end, the tail lights? Again, in person (especially the taillights) look far more proportionate, and the "lava" design is F'ing cool. The lower section, eh, it is too much. And I feel like shooting the next moron that says the interior is "improved, but it's no Audi"...OMG...who cross-shops a WRX with an Audi, much less expects them to be the same. The interior is fantastic. My GT is on order, and I opted for the three alcantara section wraps. And on the outside - I was going to get white but opted for grey, so it will be a twin to our Crosstrek - but I plan to take it to my local vinyl wrapper for OEM color match wrap of the fenders, rockers, and sections of the front and rear. I do wrap, but would prefer a pro do it on a new car. I also do hobby photography, and will post photos anywhere I can to spread the word this is one cool car.

I drove a 2020 outback with the 2.4 turbo and it’s amazingly fast!! Like way faster then a off-road capable family wagon needs to be….An Outback with the more common na 2.5 boxer feels and drives amazing already, it’s not fast like the turbo but it’s powerful enough to do everything an outback owner needs it to do and really is no different from the turbo model, plus it gets a bit better fuel economy which makes up for its somewhat average power….175HP is all you get and it’s enough power to make this lifted wagon fun and enjoyable to drive anywhere, on-road or off-road, The standard 2.5 naturally aspirated flat-4 boxer engine feels just about right for it, especially since off-roading don’t require a lot of power and even then it has plenty of power for doing some really fast desert passes and it gives you so much confidence when going fast fast thru the Desert, like it was designed for it….The suspension just soaks up all the off-road terrain, giving you nice and soft rebounds that just give you so much confidence and makes it that much more rewarding to drive and awesome to own! So the turbo outback is indeed the more bad ass of the two to own….but power is not the reason why the outback is so freaking awesome!!!! It’s the 8.7 inches of ground clearance! it’s the very capable symmetrical AWD!! It’s the amazing driving dynamics!!! It’s tall and capable like a body on frame suv, but with great car like handling dynamics!!!! The optional turbo engine would just be a big ass bonus Cherry on top!!!!! And I like it like that!!!!!

I saw the new WRX and the New York International auto show and it looks way better in person. The black fender liners don’t even stand out as much as they do in pics. The interior looks way more upscale too. It’s as if they put more effort into the car since there is no STI anymore
@RedstoneWolf5312 жыл бұрын
Wait why is the new differential controller not on the new WRX and why is it relevant that it fits? Did subaru give some weird reason to remove it or something? Or is it because maybe we can add it back?
@ImportImageRacing2 жыл бұрын
That's the center diff control for the STI for the last 2 generations. And it never fit into the last 2 generations of wrx because the sti got its own exclusive center consol so ther wrx didnt have a hole for it and would rewuire the whole consol be swapped. But it fits perfectly into the new WRX

Haven’t they said the STI is cancelled not delayed? The DCCD definitely fits because they had planned an STI version but I’m sure the poor reception of the WRX helped kill it.
@brendanfogel45732 жыл бұрын
It’s cancelled for this generation. We won’t see an Sti until the new chassis comes out which tbh people say it will be 5-8 years which is probable but I think I could see them ending this generation even earlier. Maybe we could see the Sti in 2-3 years!

@HRPMProjects2 жыл бұрын
thank you for such a great video. i truly bel;ieve this car was being built with greater potential in mind, the chassis is far superior to the previous model, it just feels that halfway through development Subaru decided to start focusing on EVs seeing how the market is moving that way and scrapped the STI program..which is probably why only the WRX version has been release with no STI. the big question for me...would the STI 6 speed gearbox from the previous model bolt into the 2022 wrx??

Boost is very much determined by heat and elevation. On a hotter day at a higher elevation the car will need more boost to make the same power. Why would they heat up the air inlet? Cold air has more energy density. Colder the better for intake air.
@ImportImageRacing2 жыл бұрын
This car is turbocharged, not naturally aspirated. The air moving into the engine passes through the intercooler first, cooling it.
@richeyrich22032 жыл бұрын
@@ImportImageRacing I was hoping for a more technical answer.
@daneyoung77702 жыл бұрын
@@richeyrich2203 The reason behind the coolant running to the inlet is for extreme cold conditions. Think of it as like a fast idle air valve that's in a throttle body - it helps keep things from freezing up if it is to ever get to that cold of a temperature. Keep in mind, the FA24 originally was equipped to Subaru SUV's - so a lot of the same technology has transferred over.
@richeyrich22032 жыл бұрын
@@daneyoung7770 I see. That tracks. But I also didn’t consider the potential or icing in an area that he usually heat soaked. And I figure for most driving conditions, coolant running through there would heat up the intake air to an unhelpful point. Though it probably would be no hotter than it would become through contact with the turbo unit anyhow..
@amerritt092 жыл бұрын
Excellent video! Makes me wonder what the specific upgrades for the STI will be? If I had to guess, upgraded IC, higher boost from same or better turbo, but those two alone don't seem enough to earn the STI name? Perhaps they'll use the same FA24 in the BRZ that has the hybrid injector system, but that seems to mostly help clean the valves and warm up the engine from cold.
