Honestly, Pokken is probably the most balanced fighting game. Literally, any character can be used and they would place high based on skill alone! All characters are viable.

There are a few characters that can null most spammers; for example; Garchomp can use dig to go projectiles, Decidueye can glide over some, and, if I’m correct, Mewtwo, has a way to nullify certain projectile spammers! Now; if your dealing with some guy that’s constantly using the same BnB combo Machamp, I’d reccomend keeping your distance and trying to find an opening; like if one part of the combo has more startup or end lag that you can take advantage of?

I tested literally every single character through and Shadow Mewtwo was just insanely fun to play. Sure, you might die to one mixup but I like playing with big guns. Gengar is something I'd like to learn too but I guess he's way too difficult for me to pick up. Also as you mentioned Garchomp, holding X was just pain in the ass and keybinding it to like L button seemed just unnatural. I love SM2 and I'm going to stick with him. Anyway, great video! Picking your favourite Pokémon is perfectly good reason to choose a character in Pokkén. I love videos like this one!

There's a huge "pick your fave Pokemon" trend in Pokken and forums are filled with comments like "I play X cause he's been my favourite since first gen" but I think it's healthier for new competitive (AKA wishing to rank high or win tournaments) players to approach the game as a blank slate. Easier said than done because the roster is full of beloved characters that carry emotional significance for Pokemon fans. I think your technique of picking a favourite and then seeing if the playstyle matches is great, but it's important to know when to let a character go. I love Gengar but I win with Mewtwo, for example.
@BadIntent6 жыл бұрын
yes I think it's great even if you love a character to at least try out others. And it helps you to stay sane while you master characters that are very complex such as Gengar.

Tier list is partly opinion but they are also a good indicator of the characters strength void of player skill, that said it shouldn't influence your pick but it also shouldnt be an excuse if you loose, since you had the same choice. Final note "good" characters can only carry you so far after a certain "thresh-hold" its timing, decision making, skill and overall experience that will carry you the furthest.

You know, what you said was the easy part is where I struggle. I can't bear choosing Lucario over Braixen and vice versa, so deciding what looks good to me becomes a dilemma where I can't figure out who I want to represent my style. I'll be envious either way, but choosing two characters to start with just seems unhealthy for helping myself get used to playing competitively. Unfortunately, this video didn't answer my problem.
@BadIntent6 жыл бұрын
Believe it or not, I started with two characters also. I played Shadow Mewtwo at the beginning but then I discovered Blaziken after a bit. Learning two characters to start is ok. If you want the simpler of Lucario and Braixen, Lucario is simpler. But Braxien teaches better field phase in my opinion.
@ellyjockey61646 жыл бұрын
@@BadIntent Another observation: When I was testing combos with Braixen, I noticed that her style provided me with more character-specific technique to work on, which is what I usually practice when I'm testing characters. I guess I love having character-specific skills to work on, which Braixen provides. Her combo potential in Duel Phase is nutty, and like in Field Phase, she has ways to confirm into her Burst Attack. But all in all, I've decided on Braixen at the moment, because I love how in-depth her kit is. Tip: An enhanced Fire Spin (By Sunny Day or Synergy Burst) will send opponents into the sky, allowing Braixen to convert into a 6Y (8Y in Field Phase) or her Burst Attack. I've also discovered another Field Phase combo: 5Y > Fire Blast > Burst Attack. It's inconsistent due to the tight timing and requiring you to be at a specific distance, but it definitely hits hard (as far as Field Phase combos go).

My first character was Lucario. He's one of my favourite Pokemons in the game. Later on, I began a restart of the whole game. There I started with Blaziken. Smash Bros. Melee has some characters that are awful, and it's completely obvious that they're awful. Whenever you're wondering if the character you play isn't viable, ask yourself: "is this character as bad as Kirby or Bowser in SSBM?" A fair alternative: "is this character as bad as Zelda, Link and Ganon (aka the Triforce Tier) in Brawl?". If they aren't, chances are you can win tournaments with them. Heck DJNintendo won an SSBM local with Bowser anyway lol.

Tier List/Charts have personally never stopped me from playing my favorite characters : EVEN if said character has been nerf'ed to the ground through patches. But I have a very big question for you, Intent. And I hope it can be a positive discussion. I'm being as objective as possible when you mentioned Tier's, are opinions. HOWEVER! 1) Are Tier List still opinions if "X" Character's frame-data and the character mechanics are considered in the community as, "top-tier material" through labbing and research. Then now, wouldn't "X" Character be considered a Top-Tier, as a fact, and not just an opinion because it has advantageous frame-data/mechanics compared to the rest of the cast of characters? 2) Continuing off from Question 1, if said Character already has the necessary tools equip, for players to have a much "easier" time making it into Top 8 in Tournaments : THUS, having "X" Character being represented and appearing more frequently because it produces results at a much easier rate. Now, wouldn't "X" Character be considered an actual Top-Tier because of results and Tournament representation? 3) What about Counter-Picking Characters then? If you were in a situation where you were in Winner's Bracket in Winner's Finals. But then got reset, going 0 - 3 in your opponent's favor, as Chandelure. So you switch off of Blaziken, and you counter-pick with Shadow Mewtwo. In that situation, isn't it in the papers that Blaziken now, would be considered a Tier level, lower than Chandelure because of how much more difficult the match up was? Or, in general, what about "any" Blaziken/Shadow Mewtwo match-ups you've thought were bad? Wouldn't those difficult match-ups mean your character lack the tools to make the matches easier to deal with even though you know the match-up fairly well? Isn't that the point of Counter-Picking? To pick a different character that gives you a better "chance" of winning because now, character "y" has better "tools/frama-data/options" the earlier character you were using didn't? 4) Follow up on Question 3. I agree with you that player skills/experience can and are a determining factor to a character's overall performance and representation on how it's tools/options are utilized. HOWEVER, if you're fighting an opponent who has the same skill level/experience as you do, and you're losing cause, I dunno, Decidueye or Pika Libre is dumb. Can we not agree those characters are just better? I guess it all comes back to Question 1. But high player skill+experience+BAD/Slow/Clunky Character = Character that hinders and binds the player. Making it harder to get positive results? But high player skill+experience+GOOD/fast/agile Character = Character that compliments the player's strengths? Thus, easily producing positive results? I guess all I'm REALLY trying to ask is: Although most of what I asked, can be answered with, "Yes, those are opinions!" But to a certain point, if there have been countless labbing and research from multiple players. Can't those studies alone + external results from player's in tournament placings with "X" character. At that point, isn't there enough material to conclude, YES, by the papers, "X" Character, is a definitive Top Tier Character? I reeeally wanted to use Super Smash Bros as my point of reference. Since it's the game where I have the most experience in. But I tried to level only to Pokken Tournament : Since both these games have completely different designs overall...But I hope my questions were understandable. Thanks Intent, for all the Pokken Tournament content! Sorry for always asking extremely long lengthy questions.
@BadIntent6 жыл бұрын
No problem, I like to generate discussion with my videos, especially if it leads to improvement. Let's see if I can go one by one. 1) For most fighting games, I don't think a character with bad frame data is necessarily bad even if there's a community consensus around them having poor tools. I do see your point though- I don't agree with the idea of tiers but it can be the case that a character is flat out better than another. I'll usually only concede that when there's another character that does pretty much exactly what they do but better. I don't play Smash so I can't use any of those examples, but in Street Fighter and Tekken there is a "shoto" and "Mishima" archetype. In SF4, there's no actual advantage to playing Dan over Ken or Ryu when they can do everything he does but better. In Tekken 7, Heihachi is excellent, but if you have the execution for it, Devil Jin is probably the bettter choice because he does much of what Heihachi does but easier and a little better. In instances like that I'd admit that a character can be objectively worse than another. But fighting games are largely asymmetric, witch characters having very different approaches and goals so having an objectively low tier character isn't something I really buy into. 2) Character representation in tournaments I think is more of a matter of- this is who the stronger players have gravitated towards. Doesn't necessarily make them better characters. I always like to say a character is either strong or weak the night before a tournament and the result of the event won't change that- it will just change opinions. Them doing well at any given event doesn't change their attributes. I do agree that some characters can be easier to do well with, but there are a lot of factors that go into that. Execution, reliance on reads, low health for instance might be severe obstacles to some players but not to others. But I don't think that difficulty at the higher stage automatically makes them better or worse. 3) Counter picking is a result of assymetric game design, not just one character being better than the other. I think you'll like the video I have going up tomorrow about solo maining vs playing multiple characters from your previous question. In an attempt to make every character feel unique, some characters flat out counter others. But even though they win that matchup, they likely have bad matchups of their own. The example I use in my video is switching off of Blaziken to play Shadow Mewtwo if I was against a Chandelure or Sceptile. But at the same time, I'd switch right back to Blaziken if I had to fight an opponent's Braixen or Pikachu Libre. This doesn't make either Shadow Mewtwo or Blaziken better than one another, they're just better equipped for different matchups. 4) To conclude, I think this is the best way to sum up my stance on it. Yes some characters can be objectively better than others, but I feel this is not only rare, but mainly only in the instances of one character doing what another does and better or easier. Overall, because characters in fighting games vary so much I don't think it's usually as simple as some characters being low tier and others being high. Just characters being different. Thanks for the question, hopefully those were enlightening. The best part is, that's just my perspective and everyone has a different view. Hopefully you find tomorrow's video helpful as well!

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply Intent! You've definitely educated me very much on the topic of Character Tiers. So much so, I might actually have something tangible to respond with the next time I find myself in a Tier List debate. Being real for a bit, your observation in fighting games has deeeefinitely surprised me. It's much broader than many other players I've ever spoken with : Where they have a pretty linear or narrow perspective on characters, and how they fit into Tier Lists. Again, thank you for taking the time to respond! Every answer to my questions, couldn't have been more perfectly delivered!

What would be the maximum amount of characters you would say to focus on seriously? The game has a lot of pokemon I really do like, and my fear is that if i pick too many to focus on I might be spreading my focus pretty thinly at the end, and it might slow me from learning advanced options later for those pokemon. Do you feel it is better just stick to one or two Pokemon to focus on, or I won't know until I try more to see how it goes for me, or that is just a bad idea from the start ? Thank you though, your videos really have helped me to not only understand the game better, but to enjoy Pokken even more. : )

I know youre still an excellent player but i'm pretty sure there will be some point where you cant achieve greater using characters like blaziken and sm2. I'm not that excellent of a player myself but i do feel that at my current level of skill, it is just difficult to win using blaziken(i main blaziken) against other players who are about my level and even a bit below me who use characters that are simply good. Lack of experience being a big factor because he wasn’t training as much as he was producing content. That’s why you see so many more FT3 videos now, two birds one stone. Being difficult to win with and being a poor character aren’t directly related. There’s a lot of things Blaziken can do that I simply can’t atm. I’m around the same level as you and I started when DX was released. I lack experience, knowledge, and game plans vs a majority of the cast. That’s not Blaziken’s fault.

I got 5th at both NCR and Genesis this year and I've still been playing Blaziken and Shadow Mewtwo. Every character has lopsided matchups, even Mewtwo has a tough time against certain characters like Chandelure though it has a good matchup spread overall. No matter what character you play it's always good to learn a secondary for bad matchups.

Just don't pick machamp ok Pretend that character doesn't exist At least until you're a absolute god at the game, then he becomes the best character Now for real, until you get the hang of the game itself you should play lucario imo.
@BadIntent6 жыл бұрын
Lucario is a commonly suggested beginner pick. I think it coves a lot of bases well, but there are a lot of other great balanced and easy Pokemon too.

Ok, whoever said Shadow Mewtwo is weak is obviously a big, fat liar, I mean, anyone who has played the story mode of the game has seen for themselves that Shadow Mewtwo is by far one of the stronger versions of Mewtwo, so what gives?!
