I am guilty of not having a structured day for my 3rd grader. We often end up with half-finished work and my child is already playing. Do you have any advice to transition smoothly to a more structured day?

One of the beauties of homeschooling is that every family gets to choose to use the materials that they feel work best for their students individual needs and their educational priorities for them!

My first grader is loving the arithmetic book You offer. This video has been very helpful and I appreciate it so very much. Thank you for your guidance during the beginning of formal years! When you mentioned subjects spread out do you recommend spreading out Reading, writing and arithmetic? Do you have a blog post that lists subjects to hit daily for each grade? Thank you.

@janevincent1309 In our bookstore, on each page for our Individual Studies by Grades lesson plan guides, we have schedules of those subjects spread out in a week about 2/3 the way down the page, as well as on the free sample download of each guide. You can find the Individual Studies, Grade 1 guide here: simplycharlottemason.com/store/individual-studies-grade-1/

Do you recommend the same approach to reading, spelling, and writing for children with dyslexia?
@SimplyCharlotteMason
@SimplyCharlotteMason 8 ай бұрын
Hi, Thank you for reaching out with your question! SCM recommends that you teach your individual child and adapt things as needed to help them with their strengths and weaknesses. If you ever find that something is not working, instead of forging ahead, we would recommend that you adapt and make changes to challenge however not frustrate the child. Here is a great post on what one of our team members experienced when teaching their child with dyslexia using Charlotte Mason's methods: simplycharlottemason.com/blog/does-charlotte-mason-work-for-a-dyslexic-child/

Hi, Thank you for reaching out with your question. You can find a sample weekly schedule for first grade here: simplycharlottemason.com/store/individual-studies-grade-1/ The sample indicates five days per week, however there are many ways to adapt this schedule to make it work for your family. Here is a post that discusses scheduling variations and how to schedule your homeschool year including some thoughts on a four day per week schedule. simplycharlottemason.com/blog/4-ways-to-schedule-your-homeschool-year/

Is it ok to still do lessons throughout the summer? We seem to not get the schedule done throughout the school year, and I'd like to incorporate some...not all...lessons that they still struggle with, or the ones in which they are interested.

Yes, you know your family best and you can have the freedom to choose to school when it works best for you and your family whether that is based on season, month, or even time of day! One of the many benefits of homeschooling is you can pray and trust God to guide you in what is best for your family and children and that may look different from what someone else does. You may have local governmental ordinances you need to comply with, but generally, this is based on a year long time frame and it does not specify the specific days or months you need to get your schooling done in. For more on the legal aspect of where you live you can also consult with HSLDA.org

Hi, Great question! You can absolutely implement Charlotte Mason’s methods into your homeschool at any time! Here are some great blog posts that outline some helpful steps in this transition. How do I make the transition to using a Charlotte Mason approach? simplycharlottemason.com/how-to-get-started/transition/ This is the first in a multi-post series titled “How to switch to Charlotte Mason homeschooling” simplycharlottemason.com/blog/transition-to-cm-basics/ This post is specific to switching to Charlotte Mason in high school but has some great tips: simplycharlottemason.com/blog/starting-charlotte-mason-homeschooling-high-school/ This post is specific to starting narration (a tool used throughout a Charlotte Mason education) with older children: simplycharlottemason.com/blog/beginning-older-children-narration-q-part-13/ This post is specific to starting habit training with older children: simplycharlottemason.com/blog/habits-q-and-a-starting-with-older-children-dealing-with-negativity/ It is a change for the whole family, however it is definitely possible to start with Charlotte Mason’s methods at any age! Please reach out with any additional questions you may have as you get started on your Charlotte Mason homeschooling journey!
